Tom Richardson is a close mate of mine and inspirational Australian singer/songwriter, who has performed in 15 different countries, had his music featured on Rip Curl surfing documentaries and in 2018, hits a decade of travelling the globe with a dream job as a full-time independent musician since the age of 21.
On today’s podcast we chat about Tom Richardson’s latest EP ‘Promise of the Light’, which is due to launch worldwide in early 2018 and was recorded in solace in lakeside cabins in Alberta, Canada and jungle hideaways in Bali, Indonesia, before collaborating with close friends Benny Walker & Tim Bennett in home studios in the Adelaide Hills and with seaside views at his home in Warrnambool, Australia.

Well now, what an amazing year 2017 has been!
After taking the leap of faith and leaving my role as Social Media Lead at SapientNitro Australia to step back into my own Social Media Strategy & Content Production business, I have relocated to Sydney from Melbourne (via Los Angeles) to take on Cancer Council Australia as a client, significantly diversified our depth of experience across a range of different industries, lectured social media strategy in university at Macleay College in Sydney for the first time, had my own radio show on Bondi Beach Radio and run a series of live podcasts including the International Business Review Conference in Melbourne just 2 weeks ago!
Over the past year or so, Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! have worked Cancer Council Australia, Planet Life Balance Virtual Reality Greening app, Moula fintech, Mahlab Agency (global B2B business, hbf insurance), REBORN Agency, and Cherry Blooms global cosmetics brand providing a range of services including a full audit of organisational digital ecosystems and assets, the generation Best Practice Social Media Playbooks and Monthly Reporting templates, creation of systems and processes to improve internal/external ways or working and 2-3 year strategic roadmaps.
3 key points have only further solidified in my mind over this time. We as Social Media Strategists, Creatives and Account Management teams need to push our teams and our clients to be more sophisticated in the creation of through-the-line strategies and content that generate Social Social Media designed for the User Experience, Funnel Strategies that drive ROI and evolve our approach for the The Next Wave of Brand Influencer Campaigns.
Inspirational quotes do zero for your brand objectives unless you’re a meditation/yoga business or run a speaker agency, cat videos and dog memes aren’t suitable unless you’re Whiskas or Chum and generic lifestyle/beauty products laid out on a towel on the beach is just not doing much of value to sales or a connection with your brand.
If you haven’t implemented the following in your agency or brand yet, then this is where you need to start in 2018:
- Social Social Media + UX – Generate Content That You’d Want To See In Your Own Mobile Newsfeed. Don’t use social media to yell at people! Billboards ≠ Effective Content.
- Create a Funnel Strategy. Create strategic content and advertising campaigns to drive results and client ROI.
- Design or re-design your digital ecosystem with specific roles.

- Design or re-design your digital ecosystem with specific roles.
- The Next Wave of Brand Influencer Campaigns – Pivot from the wanna-be Instagram model to working with and upskilling influencers to create campaigns with a measurable uplift in Sales and Return On Investment.

International Peace Day. South Bondi. Sunrise.
Life is all about perspective. Each year on the 21st of September, International Day of Peace is observed around the world. The General Assembly has declared it as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. And today I want to do my part!
One of the approaches to life that I have lived by for years is that if I’m having a bad day, I say hi to someone else, quite often a stranger, and ask them how their day is going. It is amazing the difference a little human touch and kindness can make to someone else’s day and also lift the spirits of yours in turn.
In more recent years, a philosophy I have developed for myself is that if I can make a positive impact to just one person’s life in my lifetime, then in turn that validates my own. If you then strive to bring that philosophy into every day life and push yourself to exercise more patience and understanding (even if someone cuts you off in traffic or from a perceived slight from an off-hand comment), you can actually change the lives of people around you, make an impact on a micro scale and the world a better place.
If there’s someone who’s culture/background you don’t know enough about that might provide you with more insight as to who they are or who’s position on a viewpoint you vehemently disagree with, then reach out to them and engage in open dialogue (without attacking the person or getting angry). Most judgement or hate arises from lack of understanding or fear, so if we strive for understanding, even if we still don’t agree on a viewpoint, it creates a stronger connection & brings use closer together as a species.
Do yourself a favour today, on International Peace Day. Say hi to someone you don’t know and put some love out there in the world 🌎❤✨✌

Just 1.5 years after relocating to Sydney from Melbourne (via Los Angeles) to take on Cancer Council Australia as a client, I’ve significantly diversified Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet’s depth of experience across a range of different industries in social media strategy.
After a 3 month stint in California and making the transition from my full-time role as Social Media Lead for SapientNitro in Australia driving social media for Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate, Peroni Italian Beer, Bulmers Original Cider, Oreo, Philly Cream Cheese, Kraft Peanut Butter & more, I decided that I needed a change of scenery, moved up to the beaches of Sydney, knuckling down to the task of operating my own biz again and focusing on project-work with clients across a broad spectrum, including Cosmetics, B2B, Health Insurance, Tech, Health & Wellness, FMCG, Not-For-Profit, Alcohol brands (including craft beer), Travel, Lifestyle and much more.
It’s been a wonderful journey since leaving SapientNitro and we are now in the position where we are expanding Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! to take on new ongoing clients and additional social media strategy projects, as well as ongoing/freelance content production, social media reporting and community management contracts (including Out Of Hours community management – weekends/public holidays and Crisis Management) as part of my ongoing relationships with brands, agency partners and industry friends.
Our clients over the past 12 months include Moula Money (in partnership with Xero), Cancer Council Australia, Mahlab Content Agency (B2B clients on LinkedIn, hbf), Cherry Blooms global cosmetics brand and REBORN Agency. Not only have we managed to grow the business, but in 2017 I became a university lecturer in social media strategy at Macleay College in Sydney for the 1st time, we’ve continued to build the Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! brand through our 2 Instagram accounts, @hotndelicious and @craftbeerlovin’, which have each grown by over 14K+ global followers in the past year, I’ve stepped into brand campaings as a social media influencer myself, speaking engagements at events, had a weekly radio show on Bondi Beach Radio and my weekly iTunes entrepreneurship podcast Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! continues to go from strength-to-strength, averaging over 2K downloads a month in 2017!
While every project has its challenges, be yours client-side, agency-side or indeed working in your own business, ultimately this past 18 months has been one of the most wonderful, enlightening and rewarding experiences of my life thus far – to take the leap of faith to run your own business and brand, then to see it take off! A few career highlights so far include:
- Creating the Peroni Nastro Azzurro social media brand book, which struck such a powerful chord with the Peroni brand team, so much so that they asked us to present the brand book as an example to all their agency partners and paved the way for a complete transition of Peroni into a digital brand with a new digital ecosystem including the Peroni Stile Italiano lifestyle blog and Peroni Instagram channel.
- Our award winning Philly Pourovers campaign where SapientNitro partnered with Instagram for the launch of Instagram Advertising in Australia, driving a measurable uplift in offline sales and a demonstrable ROI through social media for Philadelphia Cream Cheese.
- Sparking a national flavour debate with the creation of the Cadbury #ChocPlusWhat campaign leading up to the launch of Cadbury Dairy Milk with Vegemite Chocolate, which resulted in the Cadbury and #ChocPlusWhat trending nationally on Facebook/Twitter in Australia, made global news and was turned into a Twitter Business case study.
In my time in the advertising industry, we’ve changed the way our clients play in the social media space with innovative thinking, exciting brand building and social media-led campaigns.
When I first joined SapientNitro in July 2013, the Australian arm of the business had never focussed on social media clients before. During my time at the agency, with the support of our global social teams in Miami, New York, Chicago, Atlanta and Toronto, we transformed the Melbourne office into a digitally-focussed business, creating internal ways of working, crisis management & escalation procedures, content production and community management processes, monthly/campaign reporting templates, social listening and analytics tool assessment/review, pitch document creation for successful pitches and more.

Strangers lead singer Ben Britton & I met at the world’s largest music, film and interactive conference, South By South West (SXSW) back in 2013 when his kick-ass Australian heavy rock band Strangers were selected to play the conference and was I immediately blown away by their explosive live set in the basement at The Aussie BBQ Australian showcase event in Austin (Texas).
The Aussie BBQ SXSW boasted an A-grade line-up of the likes Vance Joy, Hiatus Kaiyote, Flume, Emma Louse, Seth Sentry, 360, Dune Rats, Clairy Browne & the Bangin’ Rackettes, Alpine, Jackson Firebird, San Cisco, The Rubens, Jack Carty, Gold Fields, The Beards, The Falls & shit-tons more… 37 amazing Australian bands and artists playing 3 stages in one venue across 13 hours in Texas!!!! Blew my mind!
And for those who haven’t been before, the most wonderful thing about touring the USA with Sounds Australia and all the Aussie bands performing every year at SXSW is that you spend time with your music industry peeps that you know from back home whom you haven’t seen for ages, make a whole swag of new music biz friends and soak up the most beautiful and generous sense of community that Austin and SXSW have on offer. Benny and I kept bumping into each other at different bars and live music showcases around Austin, became buddies that week and I was quite struck by what a friendly, chatty and genuine dude he is.
Flash forward 4 years and I am super excited to feature Strangers launch of their 2nd album ‘Mirrorland’ on Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! Benny and I catch-up to discuss just what it’s like for Australian artists/bands looking to take on SXSW, the differences between the Melbourne and Sydney music scenes, He generously shares his experiences battling anxiety and mental health, which have come to be a massive learning experience and part of the ‘Mirrorland’ album and yep, I’ll even give you an exclusive sneak peek of 3 tracks from the new album by just simply downloading the podcast.
Over the next 2 weeks this Sydney born, Melbourne based 4-piece are carving out their next steps with 2 explosive ‘Mirrorland’ album launch shows in Melbourne (Saturday Just 1st – The Evelyn Hotel) and Sydney (Friday July 14th – The Chippo Hotel).
Last time I saw them play in Texas, Benny was on some dude’s shoulders in the crowd singing mid-set, the guitarist brought his axe out into the crowd too and then I think Mr. Britton capped it all off by stage-diving back ONTO the stage and tackling the drummer and drum-kit in one fell swoop… Now THAT’s what I’m talkin’ ‘bout!
