Tom Richardson is a close mate of mine and inspirational Australian singer/songwriter, who has performed in 15 different countries, had his music featured on Rip Curl surfing documentaries and in 2018, hits a decade of travelling the globe with a dream job as a full-time independent musician since the age of 21.
On today’s podcast we chat about Tom Richardson’s latest EP ‘Promise of the Light’, which is due to launch worldwide in early 2018 and was recorded in solace in lakeside cabins in Alberta, Canada and jungle hideaways in Bali, Indonesia, before collaborating with close friends Benny Walker & Tim Bennett in home studios in the Adelaide Hills and with seaside views at his home in Warrnambool, Australia.
We also enjoy vast-ranging chats about the systems & processes and tools that Tom utilises as a small business owner to keep a balanced life of physical & mental health, his favourite podcasts including Song Exploder, The Tim Ferris Show and Pilgrim Heart with Krishna Das, different meditation and yoga techniques that he practices, sharing stages with the likes Joe Bonamassa, Cold Chisel, John Butler Trio and a musical passport of memories including musical collaborations with Native American poets, Indian Kirtan masters, Fijian highland village choirs & indigenous Australian icons. Fascinating chats!
This latest release truly reflects Tom Richardson’s nomadic schedule and his life across the past 10 years, which is a musical odyssey of regular tours around Australia, North America, Asia and Europe leading to “rave reviews, prime festival slots, and international airplay”.
Oh and we snapped up the exclusive 1st worldwide global release of ‘Somebody Say Love’, the first single off Tom Richardson‘s ‘Promise of the Light’ EP! YES!
Super podcast, top bloke. I know you will enjoy the show. Let’s get into it!

The 5 must-haves for Aussies when applying for a US Visa – A podcast with Andrea Szew.

Ever wanted to work in the USA like me?
Last year I was in Los Angeles and the USA under the ESTA Visa Waiver Program for just under 3 months to explore what Los Angeles was like as a place to be based for work – to see if there was another side to the City of Angels away from the plastic fantastic and then based on these experiences, decide if I wished to pursue the O1 Visa as an option to work in the USA (also known as the O1 Alien of Extraordinary Ability Visa – yes, that’s what it’s called).
Now any Australian who has spent time in Los Angeles with a Green Card, E3 or O1 Visa will tell you that they have the best US Immigration Lawyer in the USA ever! And chances are that they might, but it’s not all cut & dried and there are some key things that you need to know before you go splash the cash on securing a lawyer in the hopes of chasing the American dream.
This week on Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! I chat with Los Angeles-based US International Business and Immigration lawyer, Andrea Szew, about:
- The 5 Must-Haves When Applying for a US Visa.
- How Trump’s administration is affecting foreign nationals’ ability to work in the US 1 year on since taking office and what you as an applicant needs to take into consideration.
- Andrea Szew’s life growing up in California, her time at UCLA and what inspired her to become a lawyer specializing in Immigration Law.
- Some of the iconic clients Andrea’s worked with including Hootsuite CEO, Ryan Holmes, Australia’s Thunder from Down Under in Las Vegas and much much more.
For context, Andrea and I met through the Aussies in LA / Australians in LA Facebook Pages, which is a wonderful community of Aussies and a super important resource for any Australian based in or seeking to be approved for a USA visa to work in Los Angeles.
And the good news is that there is SO much more to L.A. than the glitter, gloss and your name up in lights; countless hiking trails in the greater Los Angeles area, live comedy every night of the week, amazing Mexican food, a live music scene that makes your mouth water and I fell in love with the Sports Bar culture too. I’ve found the American people as a whole, from my previous holidays there and on this trip, to be so warm and welcoming, polite and giving. Plus if you need it, there’s this a super supportive community of expat Australians in both Los Angeles and New York City (should you need it) and a whole new country to explore. Loves it!
So if you an Australian businessman/women seeking to work in the USA or you have a friend who is… if you are award-winning digital media professional, an actor, musician, producer or entertainer who believes you have done the hard yards and have what it takes to make it in the USA, then this is the podcast for you!

Los Liones Trail & Bursting the Plastic Fantastic Bubble of LA by hiking California – Hike #4

https://hotndelicious.com/
Los Liones Trail in the Santa Monica Mountains in Los Angeles, California, is just the best!
One of the most important things when traveling the world over and learning about a new city or country is to hang out with people who actually live there and do what the locals do. Find your people and soak up the local culture.
When deciding whether to spend most of my 90 days in the USA in New York or Los Angeles, the factors that I used to weigh up my decision were the culture (I felt like New York would be a better fit for me), weather/climate, opportunities and friends/networks.
Ultimately the weather and my friends/networks played a BIG factor in me deciding on Los Angeles as opposed to NYC, but one of my concerns was getting trapped up in the plastic fantastic lifestyle of Tinsel Town, like I did when based in Dubai whilst working with Emirates Airlines. I needn’t have worried.
Sure, if you’re keen to party all the time (and I had my moments), there’s something on every single night of the week in Los Angeles if you want it; a killer stand-up comedy scene at places like Nerdmelt Showroom, The Comedy Store or Hollywood Improv, world-renown live music venues like Sayers Club, Whisky A Go Go and Viper Room, a vast array of restaurants/bars and because a vast majority of the population work in the entertainment industry, there’s always launch parties, awards ceremonies or drinks and networking meetings to get to.
My focus for this trip was to enjoy LA, but it was also imperative that I knuckle down into my new freelance Australian social media contracts that I was working on remotely, to get a feel for California and start building some networks.
I also didn’t want to get trapped up in meaningless acquaintance-style friendships partying 5-7 days a week like some of those I made in my Dubai days, ’cause I’m at a stage in my life where things are really starting to take shape and I’d rather pour the majority of my time and money into something more tangible, that makes me truly happy.
As regular readers will know from my hiking articles so far on Griffith Observatory, Lake Hollywood and Hollywood Peak, I balanced my nights out in LA watching live comedy, catching up with friends or watching the NBA Finals at my local sports bar, with some of the best hikes all around Los Angeles.
And no, I’m not just talking Runyon Canyon, where all the beautiful people hang out and talk shop – I loved chatting with friends who live in LA about their favourites hikes or seeking out new ones to try together. It’s a wonderful way to strengthen friendships and get away from the bubble of Hollywood, that it could be so easy to get trapped up in.
One such trail I discovered recently with my friends Sam, Bec and Cat was Los Liones Canyon, a short drive past Santa Monica Pier to the start of the Santa Monica Mountains, a coastal mountain range in Southern California, parallel to the Pacific Ocean, with over 500 miles of trails offering the perfect escape from the urban jungle.
We hiked for a solid 2 and a quarter hours, with an array of wildlife in the area including a bunch of lizards & one solitary sleepy snake, who was struggling to get off the trail, and as the “May Gray” (yeah, that’s a thing) started to wash away from the SoCal skies about halfway through our hike, we were left with stunning, sweeping views of Santa Monica, the whole of greater Los Angeles and it’s seemingly endless beaches…
Ultimately it’s become abundantly clear to me through Californian experiences like these, that while LA is definitely Hollywood and Tinsel Town it is so much more. By trusting your gut instinct, doing a little research and approaching the exploration of cities that are brand new to you with the right mindset, you can choose your own adventure and it’ll change your life. This 90 days in Los Angeles, California was the right decision for me.
Happiness!

Los Angeles Hike #2 – Hollywood Peak – California State Parks.

https://hotndelicious.com/
Wicked hike the other night!
It’s been a hectic week or two at Hot & Delicious HQ with a couple of brand new clients in Australia and the UK on board and I only had a 1/2 day off last week, so this hike up to Hollywood Peak from Griffith Observatory is EXACTLY what I needed!
I’d seen Hollywood Peak from Griffith Observatory and shot sunset silhouette photos of its majesty before, but hadn’t had the chance to scale her heights… and boy am I glad I did! With sweeping 360-degree views of the city of Los Angeles, Downtown LA, the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Park below, this climb (and it is a climb in parts – you can also take the easy, winding route) it the perfect place to spend a Californian sunset.
You can either Uber/Lyft/public transport it to Griffith Park and then hike up in 2 stages (about 1.5 – 2 hours one way) to Griffith Observatory then Hollywood Peak or drive/Uber to Griffith Observatory and then hike/climb the rest of the way up the top to Hollywood Peak.
Smashing way to clear the head and man… when you hit the top… Glorious!

Lake Hollywood Park. A Hidden Hiking Gem in Los Angeles – Travel blog & photography.

Lake Hollywood Park. Truly the most spectacular views of the Hollywood Sign that I’ve seen in LA yet!
One of the most challenging parts of spending an extended period in a new city is networking and meeting new people…
This is not an issue that I’ve had in Cali. I already know a bunch of peeps here including my close friend and Aussie actor Andrew Bongiorno, who’s currently playing the lead role in the West Coast premiere of The Boy From Oz! musical. An absolute champion and on ANZAC Day we hit one of L.A.’s most spectacular and underutilized hikes.
Lake Hollywood Park. Picture perfect blue skies & practically the place to ourselves… BEST! ️

Travel blog & photography – Get Lost & Go Hiking in California State Parks.

6 weeks ago I touched down in the USA for 90 days and man… has that time just flown!
Texas for podcasts and music photography at SXSW, Georgia for The Masters and the past 3 weeks checking out what life’s all about in Los Angeles, California.
The 23-year-old me would have partied all night and slept all day once I hit LA (don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty of that and meeting new people mixed in on weeknights/weekends), but apart from creating content and networking, my focus has been soaking up all that SoCal mountain parks have on offer… getting in as many of the amazing hikes as I can that the greater city of Los Angeles has on offer… Brand Park and Wildwood Canyon in Burbank, the surprisingly quiet, but rather beautiful Lake Hollywood, Runyon Canyon (currently closed for 4 months for pipe-works)… and this very sunset hike up Griffith Park Trails to LA’s iconic Griffith Park Observatory.
Just beautiful!

Nestlé work with Didier Drogba and YouTube star Louis Cole in Ivory Coast on Kit Kat’s New Global Sustainability Ads.
Nestlé Cocoa Plan fuelling sustainable Kit Kat chocolate the world over – Sponsored Post.
As a digital media professional who’s worked agency-side with an international chocolate brand, I am all too aware of the challenges faced with the volume of chocolate we’re consuming as a planet versus the supply of a sustainably-produced of cocoa beans.
In a landmark moment in the industry’s history, Kit Kat chocolate is the first chocolate brand to announce that from 2016 they will only use sustainably sourced cocoa in their Kit Kat chocolate bars around the world as part of Nestle’s broader Nestlé Cocoa Plan.
To learn more about the Nestlé Cocoa Plan, check out the first of this fascinating video series by Kit Kat featuring Louis Cole and Didier Drogba.
In this first video, Didier and Louis discuss the partnership between The Didier Drogba Foundation and the Nestlé Cocoa Plan.
The YouTube star and the Ivorian professional footballer make a surprise visit to the kids at one of the 40+ schools in farming regions that Nestlé have built in the Ivory Coast through the Nestlé Cocoa Plan, the Côte d’Ivoire of course being the largest producer of cocoa beans in the world.
The broad smiles and elation on these young, shiny faces is instantly visible and Didier “takes a break” with the kids playing football with an innovate football creation – a football that also doubles as a battery and charges kinetically as Didier and the kids kick it around the schoolyard together. The football/battery then has a special light attachment that can be used at night when the kids get home from school as a light source while they study their homework.
As the series continues, viewers can learn about the other areas of the Nestlé Cocoa Plan, which is designed to improve the lives of cocoa farmers and the quality of their products, including the prevention of child labour, education and new tools for farmers and support for women looking to generate income for their families.
Wonderful to see big business making an effort to create inspired and innovative marketing projects that not only benefit their brand, but the global community at large!
