One of my very favourite things about Melbourne is this city’s flourishing independent music scene.
Birthplace of many an amazing musician, hundreds if not thousands of budding rock stars flock to Australia’s cultural capital from around Australia and New Zealand at the promise of just a little taste of success.
Fortunately with the technological age we’re in, courtesy of the fantastic work of the likes of Sounds Australia, triple j unearthed and countless wonderful music blogs, those musicians of the likes of DZ Deathrays, Alpine, Flume, Emma Louise, The Falls and more who are prepared to do the hard yards with constant touring, scrapping it out to survive the daily struggle of making ends meet and market themselves effectively through social media channels can transition a lot more quickly these days to the international scene from Australia’s wonderful, but heavily saturated music scene.
One musician I know can spread her wings and make this transition is the beautiful, Maeflower. Graduate of renowned creative institution, VCA (Victorian College of the Arts), this Saturday sees Maeflower launch her debut EP in Melbourne at killer live venue, Cherry Bar (seriously if you haven’t experienced Cherry then you don’t know Melbourne’s music scene).
In Maeflower’s own words “mixed and produced by long-time friend and collaborator Alexander Laska (KINGSWOOD), the self-titled EP combines her natural inclination for song writing and a voice that pays tribute to the greats of the past and present from Etta James to Alicia Keys, from Billie Holiday to Frank Ocean.”
Yep, she’s underselling it massively.. seriously.. just one listen to the rooftop session above or free download of her jams via triple j unearthed, will have you sailing away on an ocean of soul, love and beauty…
And then you’ll reach for the repeat button… See you Saturday!
