The Power of “No, I Don’t Work For Free”.

“We Should Collab”. It always starts like this… every single time… “We Should Collab” or a version of it slides into my LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram DMs, either unwittingly or with clear intent, that screams “I want free sh*t!”, and honestly I am quite done with it.

No, I don’t work for free, just ‘cause you need the help. I may not have the capacity or even the interest. And you shouldn’t be expecting it either!

To be 100% clear up front, this article is written with 2 purposes and audiences:

  1. The Power of “No, I Don’t Work For Free”– is to help empower the freelancers and consultants, whether they be a digital media professional, creative or any other type of freelance consultant, to understand the power of no, to have tools that will help you avoid getting frustrated when approached to work for free and how to have that conversation with people approach you, who either don’t understand what they’ve asked or should know better. I have even created an email template letter at the end of this blog that you can have for free! 😁  Feel free to tweak and copy & paste to send to people when you’re asked for free sh*t and don’t have capacity or interest.
  2. Do you want help with your biz or projects? – I’ve written 5 simple steps, also at the end of this blog, to help you learn how to ask for help in the right way from professionals when you really need it.

Context for The Power of “No, I Don’t Work For Free”:

3-4 times a week without fail I receive one of the following personalised messages via Instagram on @hotndelicious or @BondiPupperazzi, LinkedIn, Facebook DMs or email:

  1. “We Should Collab”.
  2. “I should come with you on a sunrise walk one morning and you can teach me how to use my camera and about photography”.
  3. “You should come shoot photos of me”.
  4. “I should get you to help me with my social media”.

Invariably after a little exploration, simply translated these phrases each mean “I want free sh*t”.

Now I give my time, expertise and creative energies away freely every single week of the year. Every week I capture images of locals and surfers in Bondi Beach, which I share via my @hotndelicious Instagram Newsfeed and Stories, and I shoot beautiful premium images of the doggos of Bondi Beach through my brand new Humans of New York-style premium dog photography business and brand, @BondiPupperazzi.

Every single day people spot themselves or their doggos in my photography and I always offer to email them through the shots (which I’ve done twice today already). I love how happy this makes the recipient and how it makes me feel too, but the key point of note in this example is that it is my choice to give, not just because someone wants, needs and/or expects something from me.

I work for free on my own projects and help out close friends every single week, however again it is my choice where I allocate that time and it has to be finite, because sharing my love with the world doesn’t pay my rent or put food on the table.

So where does this culture of expectation come from?

Over the past 15-20 years, digital media and tech innovation has lead to the explosion of social media platforms and all of us now have these fantastic, powerful little cameras in our pockets. The step above that is the proportion of digital media professionals and photographers who continue to hustle to stay on the cutting edge in this ever growing and ever evolving digital landscape, as part of our professional careers. Digital professionals and creatives, including myself, will also regularly work cheaper or for free to help a close mate, if there’s an opportunity to learn something new, to further improve our skills, build a portfolio or be a part of something wonderful for social impact. But it always has to feel like our choice.

The digital and tech revolution has also created an environment and paved the way for large volumes of individuals who now claim to be social media strategists or experts (avoid all self-proclaimed social media unicorns, gurus, ninjas and rockstars – they’re usually full of sh*t) or professional photographers, that definitely are not, which means that it is a lot of people will now do sh*t for cheap or for free to get experience (which is great) or get their names out there, but it won’t always be the best quality.

Compound that with the fact that (in my opinion), only the very top tier of digital media professionals, who have worked with brands and companies at scale, spending hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars on an annual basis on paid advertising with the social media platforms, can truly comprehend digital media strategy, advertising execution and what success looks like (put simply how your social media content and ad executions on various social media platforms ladder up to strategic business and brand objectives).

In my case, my digital media experience comes from working both agency and client-side for the past 10+ years, across a diverse range of industries with local and global clients including Telstra Enterprise, UNSW, Cancer Council Australia, Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate, Philadelphia Cream Cheese, Peroni Italian beer, Miller Genuine Draft, Kopparberg, Bulmers Cider, Plant Life Balance augmented reality greening app, Moula Money B2B fintech and many more, writing strategies, agency/stakeholder ways of working, creating and generating clear-cut digital reporting with insights, data & analytics, copywriting and much, much more.

From the photography side of things, I have been shooting for 20+ years (yep, I had an SLR before DSLRs were a thing) – in the music industry at festivals around Australia and the USA for about 6-7 years including the likes of Vance Joy, Wolfmother, CHVRCHES and Gotye, then shooting commercial brand content for the likes of Peroni Italian Beer, Miller Genuine Draft, Strongbow, Kopparberg, Bulmers and lots more over the past 7 years, I had my first exhibition of my work last year and even then, I don’t think that I truly hit my stride until this year, where I’ve been spending hundreds of hours in 2020 alone honing my photographic craft and editing skills. And I still have so much more to learn… Particularly from a tech perspective!

So when you slide into my DMs or emails with an expectation that I’m going to work for free, I actually feel quite disrespected and even in recent times it has infuriated me!

Just because you have a Facebook Page, a Twitter handle and have worked on a few small business Instagram accounts (or even 50K followers ‘cause your followers love your fit rig and tight-fitting clothes), it doesn’t mean that you’re any good at social media strategy. Or just ‘cause you have a kick-ass smartphone with ever improving cameras, it doesn’t mean you understanding framing & composition and the skill that it takes to create amazing professional quality photography. What might seem like a small job to you, is in fact actually 3-4 hours of my time to do properly and if I say yes, it takes time away from those other projects and more importantly prospective paid client work, that puts food on my table.

The reason that you’re coming to me and people like me is that we’ve slaved for years to build our experience and a skillset. I feel privileged and honoured that you want my help, however it is crucial that we’re all cognisant of the way we ask for help (I even consider this myself every time I ask for help with my own projects). Expertise takes thousands of hours of learning and honing a craft, so it has value and needs to be treated as such.

For context. Would you ask your family doctor or mechanic to give you a freebee? Would you trust him/her and their work fully if they gave it to you? So why would you ask that of me?

Do you want help with your biz or projects? The approach is actually quite simple:

All of us need help with our projects and I have a number of trusted friends/colleagues, who have helped SO much over the years and continue to help me on my journey every single week, so here are my top 5 tips for you when asking a professional for help:

  1. Build a network of friends and business contacts – nuture these friendships and professionals relationships across the years of your life with both give and take.
  2. Consider what you can give them that might be of perceived value – whenever you need help from a friend, colleague or even someone that you don’t know, think about what you can give that might help them first and offer it as part of the conversation around your project before asking them for their time. Collaboration or contra deals only work if both parties are getting perceived value from the agreement. And if they’re not interested or they can’t provide assistance, simply say “thank you for your time” and ask if they have one suggestion that will help you make a start. Giving that is easy. If they don’t want anything in return for their time/help, then make sure that they are made aware that you appreciate them and find another way to pay it forward for someone else.
  3. NEVER use the phrase “I will give you exposure”.
  4. Ask, Don’t Assume – chances are that if you’re asking the right person, then they are already successful in their professional pursuits, have a full plate of their own, are working on a number of passion projects that incorporate using their skills for free and they will have limited capacity/time to help.
    • Ask for their thoughts.
    • Ask if they’re interested.
    • Ask they have time and capacity rather than assuming that they will, even if they’re a close contact or friend.
  5. Say thank you – irrespective of whether they can help you or not, always make them feel the love and thank someone for their time. Time is precious.

This approach will illustrate that you value a professional’s time and expertise. It will make them feel respected, appreciated and show them that you understand that it’s not all about you.

The Power of “No, I Don’t Work For Free” – The Email Template:

I’ll finish here by giving you this “No, I Don’t Work For Free” email template that I created and used for the first time yesterday (the email template is down below the photo gallery – share it and this blog article with your friends!).

I have added “No, I Don’t Work For Free” to my Gmail email templates and on Evernote to copy & paste and send to anyone, who wants my services for free, when I can’t or don’t want to proceed. You can also add your rate card to the email for context if you feel that the situation calls for it.

Writing this “No, I Don’t Work For Free” blog piece and email template across the past few days has been quite a cathartic experience, alleviated my frustration and I’m now empowering myself to use this experience positively – to not get frustrated or annoyed at times when casual friends, acquaintances or people who don’t know me, approach me with an expectation that I even have the interest and/or capacity to work for them for free. Hopefully it’ll help to educate people that my time and that of my peers and colleagues is precious. It’s worth time and money. As is yours.

“No, I Don’t Work For Free” is my gift to you and it’s amazing how liberating it feels for me. Your networks and friends are a powerful tool that can help you do great things, but like all tools it’s about using them the right way. Good luck with your projects and I’m excited to see all of you do big things!

Hey ,
Between @hotndelicious, @BondiPupperazzi, pitching to secure new paid clients, looking for an apartment and the hours that I’m spending on writing the web series documents and the tasks associated with that, I just don’t have capacity for any more “free work” at the moment.
For context, I get asked 3-4 times a week from people wanting free work in social media, copywriting and photography, and if I say yes, it takes time away from those other projects and more importantly prospective paid work.
I hope you understand and best of luck with your project!
Dan

Daytrippin’ Manly & 4 Pines Brewpub with @craftbeerlovin’

4 Pines Keller Door Pomegranate Sour 📷✨ @craftbeerlovin’
On Sunday last week, I escaped the Bondi Bubble and jumped on the Fast Ferry from Watson’s Bay Wharf across Sydney Harbour, bound for the Northern Beaches. Pumped!
.
I hit lunch in Manly with a poke bowl on the Manly foreshore, enjoyed a short stroll over to Shelly Beach and wrapped the arvo with my fried Maria with storytelling and soaking up the sweeping views of Sydney CBD, Sydney Harbour and the south side of Sydney from North Head, at the mouth of Sydney’s world renown Sydney Harbour.
.
For me, no trip to Manly would be complete without a pit stop at 4 Pines Brewpub at Manly Wharf, as I’m a massive craft beer fan and review brews from around the globe on my @craftbeerlovin’ Instagram account, which I run with one of my best mates, Nate, who’s a soya bean and corn farmer, based near Peoria, about 2.5-3 hours south west of Chicago. Anyway, I washed down the day trip to Manly with a delicious 4 Pines Keller Door Pomegranate Sour and a pint of 4 Pines In Season IPA, both of which are downright delicious! (reviews below).
.
At sunset, I jumped a ride back to Watson’s Bay and the Manly Fast Ferry had ice-cold 4 Pines American-style Pale Ale bottles in the fridge. Absolute genius and sunset beers on Sydney Harbour was just the perfect end to the day!
.
I have lived in Sydney for 4 years, it’s rather spectacular and there is nothing quite like taking the time to be a tourist in your own city! It quite honestly still blows my mind every single time!
.
Cheers and Happy Friday y’all!

@hotndelicious Photo Diary | Bondi to Bronte Magic & Silhouette Sessions

Cedric the surfer from Belgium. Bronte Beach. @hotndelicious Photo Diary | Bondi to Bronte Magic & Silhouette Sessions
Phwoar!!!!! I’ve just had one of the most amazing photography sessions of my life!
.
Mind-blowing sunrise, surf photography and silhouette sessions between Tamarama and Bronte Beach!
.
I was in the zone, zen-focused and the only way that I can describe the shoot is split second captures, moments in time and an approach that I taught myself in the music industry whilst shooting freelance for triple j/myself at festivals/gigs around Australia and honed over the past 10-15 years in Australia, the USA and around the world…
.
Be in the moment and by all means grab a diverse array of images that people expect/that the client wants, but don’t just shoot what’s in front of you… try for something new, shoot from a different perspective and take in the whole scene, then fully your gut instinct and position yourself in the best vantage points to anticipate and time where you think that the best, most unexpected and most spectacular photos will be… from your perspective. That’s how you inspire your own creative flow, keep your passion for photography and that’s how stand out as one of the best, with a style of your very own.
.
I am my own harshest critic and while I am keenly aware that I still have SO much to learn about the technical/editing side of things, I can see how far that I’ve come in this past 6 months alone and I am proud of me. In my humble opinion, we should own what we’ve achieved for ourselves, our growth and what we’re good at, as it helps generate a sense of self-worth and purpose, which keeps our energy levels high and the positivity flowing, which in turn generates a desire for forward momentum through further growth.
.
I felt so energised after this beautiful morning on Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk that my synapses were firing on all cylinders for literally the rest of Saturday, as I hit the ocean for a bodysurfing sesh post-shoot, Bondi Farmers Market with a friend for a fresh baguette and sunflowers for my apartment and a delicious bowl of pho, Bondi Icebergs Club for a Saturday arvo beers with a close mate from my Dubai days and even  into the next day when I went at it again! It’s amazing how it can make you feel when you feed your creativity and flow… so in love with life!
.
Split second captures. Moments in time. So focused and so zen. One of the sickest f*ckin’ sunrise surf photography sessions of my life!

Bondi to Bronte: Creative Inspiration & 7 Days of Sunrise.

Posted on Updated on

Sunrise Beach Volleyball - Tamarama Beach by @hotndelicious
Sunrise Beach Volleyball – Tamarama Beach by @hotndelicious
What a magical start to Wednesday!
.
I hit the backstreets of South Bondi and Tamarama on my sunrise Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk this morning to get the glutes and quads firing, which makes my butt feel like a ripe peach at Harris Farms on market day and kickstarts the endorphins firing through my system by the time I start shooting out the back of Tamarama Beach, as the sun rises over the ocean and I walk down the hill from above to Bronte Beach.
.
I had an energising week of little wins last week, with several prospective biz opportunities that I’m hoping will come into a fruition over the coming weeks and months, PLUS I’m launching a new business venture within the next 7 days – you know that I’m into it and firing on all cylinders when I carve out time on a Saturday afternoon to register various domain names, the business name and lock-in all of the brand new social media handles across all platforms. You’re going to love this – it’s going to make you crack up with laughter and give you squeals of joy when you see it. Watch this space!
.
That combined with 7 x sunrise walks and 7 x lunchtime bodysurfing sessions in the 7 days from Monday to Sunday last week, had me flowing with energy and joy, so I was well ready for a 3.5 hour sunrise photography walk this morning after being stuck inside of the wet & cold, blustery winter weather of Bondi Beach the past 2 days (yes, it happens sometimes in winter) 😁✨
.
I met Maria at Bronte Beach just after sunrise and we had lovely little chats, whilst capturing silhouettes of waves against the Mackenzies Point and North Bondi backdrop, bumped in Uge AKA Aquabumps at Bronte Beach and a bunch of different peeps back on my home turf on the promenade at Bondi Beach, including one of my Instagram followers Kirsten, whom I’d never met in person before. She stopped me to say hi and tell me how much she loves my pics. Thank you! (Do it, don’t be shy, peeps – it makes my day every single time). I love our little Bondi Beach community!
.
As we speak, I’m editing this morning’s images with a smile on my face and you’ll note that I’ve given the captures some rustic yellows and deep, sky blues in Lightroom, as to me they fit the vibe this morning – coming out into the light of a beautiful sunrise after a stormy few days and the sea is still quite wild. Can you guess which shots are my faves?
.
I am looking forward to my lunchtime bodysurfing sesh and excited for the beautiful weather forecasted for the week ahead!
.
Happy Wednesday everybody!

Secret spot out the back of Tamarama Beach by @hotndelicious
Secret spot out the back of Tamarama Beach by @hotndelicious
From the backstreets of Tamarama to Bondi Beach. Cracking sunrise, Sydney!
.
After the dirty-ass, stormy winter weather last week, I set myself a goal to smash out sunrise photography walks and bodysurfing every single day this week. Got to earn those weekend bevies (and the shhhh… weekday COVID lockdown brews 😁🤦‍♂️ 🤫) , plus I’m a massive foodie and loves a hot dinner too! 😆🥳
.
On my sunrise photography walks, I predominantly decide on the fly which route I’m going to walk & shoot (I’ll even change mid-walk), as I adore the spontaneity of a life lived in the moment and that’s how I shoot my photography too. It keeps it fresh, makes me feel more present, which in turn builds a feeling of zen and I find that it generates even higher levels of excitement, when I discover and snap so many amazing, spontaneous moments in time (as I did this morning) by going with the flow and just seeing where the mood and shoot takes me.
.
I hit a couple of my favourite secret spots out the back of Tamarama Beach, captured surfers riding beautiful sets into Bronte Beach – shot from the park bench in front of Tamarama SLSC (check out the one with the salmon jumping out of the water in front of the dude about to fall off his surfboard!!! Seriously!!!!!) and on the home stretch, I walked up and over the hill at Mackenzies Point to soak up surfers making the most of every last second of the golden waves at high tide in South Bondi. 2 hours of absolute bliss. This morning was fire!
.
Love you Bondi!

Big Wave Surfing the massive waves at Ben Buckler!

Big Wave Surfer braves massive swell at Ben Buckler by @hotndelicious
Big Wave Surfer braves massive swell at Ben Buckler by @hotndelicious
BIG Wave Surfer! 🏄‍♂️🌊🌈
.
Shot from across Bondi Bay at Mackenzies Point, I didn’t even realise that I’d captured this local big wave surfer braving the massive conditions off North Bondi Rocks yesterday until I sat down at my desk in Bondi Beach to edit the images in Lightroom! True story!
.
I’d actually set-up my monopod and Canon 6D with an EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS lens with the intent of capturing images of the towering waves exploding over Ben Buckler and the massive swell rolling in to Bondi Beach. I hadn’t even spotted the 2-3 surfers that were out there!
.
The shot was zoomed in on Ben Buckler, I had it framed, focused and was so I focused on timing the waves to get them exactly where I wanted in frame, that I had no idea that I’d captured this little snapshot in time. Check out the gallery of images below and you’ll see to sequence of big wave surfer shots, as well as the original larger scale images framed as I was originally shooting for.
.
I’m not much of a surfer myself, however I’ve been in the ocean bodysurfing for as long as I can remember from my time as a little kid in Perth (Western Australia) to today, where I still swim daily in Bondi Beach (where the waves will allow) and soak up the thrill, the endorphins, a moment in time and joyous little shot of pure ecstasy every single time that I’m riding a wave.
.
Just like the ocean, I love it when my photography surprises me, it feeds me joy almost daily and brought a massive smile to my face yesterday to discover this little gem on my lens!
.
One Wave is all it takes. Happy Fluro Friday y’all! 🏄‍♂️🌊🌈✨

Bam! Dark & Stormy. Welcome to wet & wild Bronte Rock Pool magic!
.
Explosive 10-15ft waves and wet & wild conditions are pounding the east coast of Australia this week and I was excited to hit Bronte Rock Pool at Sydney’s iconic Bronte Beach with my home-boy (and fellow shooter) JB this morning to capture this little bit of magic.
.
Hit me up if you’re keen to snap up one of these wicked photographic prints and I hope that you’re having a lovely week. Stay safe out there, peeps!

“5 more minutes”. Dolphin action at sunrise.

“5 more minutes”. Dolphin action at sunrise 🐬🌅✨ I’m generating impetus in life, my ambitions and my career by feeding my creativity. And yep, all of these wildlife shots were captured by 11am in one morning!
.
Most days, I am up and out of bed in the dark between 5-6am to hit a sunrise photography walk and this past 3-4 weeks, I have been at Mackenzies Point most mornings, as the sun breaks the horizon over the ocean, eagerly anticipating humpback whales breaching as they migrate north this season.
.
2 Fridays ago I switched it up, soaking up sunrise in North Bondi at Ben Buckler with my friend Michelle Louise AKA @ginger_skybird. After spotting a few humpback whales in the near distance and Alex the Seal heading into Bondi Bay for breakfast, I turned to Mish and said “5 more minutes, then let’s go grab coffee and breakfast in North Bondi.”
.
Next minute, this massive pod of around 50-100 dolphins exploded on the yellow-bronzed horizon, some stopping off at Ben Buckler to hit a large bait ball swimming off the point (a bait ball is a tightly-packed formation or school of fish), whilst the rest of the dolphins charged across to Bronte Beach and Waverley Cemetery. Magical!
And the magic didn’t stop there… as I arrived home and was settling down to edit all of the sunrise and wildlife imagery, this small flock of rarer yellow-tailed black cockatoos land on the roof opposite my balcony in Bondi Beach. Sometimes I have to pinch myself about this life that I’m living and the daily joy that Bondi Beach and its surrounds brings me. All of this before 11am!
.
My photography is bringing me a lot of contentment and peace right now. 18 months ago, I set myself 3 x new career goals, one of which was to host my 1st ever art exhibition and I made the decision to start selling my artistic works, which I hit mid-2019, when I was commissioned for Art On The Streets in Bondi Beach, with a panel of photography on the streets of Bondi and the exterior of local Asian-fusion restaurant, Mamasan Bondi decorated with my works also (yep, and thanks to Mamasan I became a street artist for the first time too – I never even imagined that in my wildest dreams).
.
As the pandemic hit full swing in Australia earlier this year, a lot of advertising industry clients hit the pause button and determined as ever to put a positive spin on things (while I’ve had my rough days and struggled for motivation at times like everyone else), I pivoted to invest my time into pitching new brand ideas, building the next phase of my career, increasing the frequency of my already regular exercise regime and focussing on mental health, which includes investing time into activities that bring me happiness and joy. Photography is a key part of that for me.
.
I have been honing my photographic skills further with 2-3 hour DSLR walks, experimenting with my Canon 100-400mm lens, capturing different, more varied subject matter and taken more time with my Lightroom photography edits.
.
As a result, in the past 2 months I have actually sold more prints than ever before; more than all of the previous months and years combined and I have been receiving unsolicited little DMs/WhatsApp messages/texts/Comments most days from friends, family and random strangers around the world, which gives me a lovely little starburst of energy each time, as while I shoot for me, I love that it can bring a little joy to the lives of those in the world around me! Thank you to all of you who’ve said hi!
.
And the momentum does not stop there. I am continuing the process of re-launching my website to make my prints more readily available for purchase online and as part of that, I am making myself accountable to myself, my friends and the people who are in my world, by setting myself the goal 3 weeks ago, of blogging on a weekly basis on hotndelicious.com for the rest of 2020, as purpose is everything and creating good habits provide me with impetus when it comes to the bigger picture.
.
I am my own hard taskmaster, I’m hungry and no-one is harder on me than me, yet little gems await in those sliding doors moments in time when I allow myself to flow with instinct, embrace the moment, feed my creativity and provide my mind with some space to breathe.
.
By being kind to myself, taking a break from my “monkey mind” and feeding my creativity, I find fresh impetus that brings me great joy! 5 more minutes… Magic way to kick-off a Friday!
