Happiness!

Anyone who listens to Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! on Bondi Beach Radio and the iTunes podcast every week, will know that I am a massive fan and believer in chasing your dreams in the pursuit of happiness.

This week I am excited to have award-winning Australian comedian, podcaster & writer, Tom Ballard on Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! to promote his 2017 stand-up show Tom Ballard – ‘Problematic’, LIVE at Giant Dwarf this Thursday 4th – Sunday 7th May as part of Sydney Comedy Festival.

Over the past 2 years since our last recording together, Tom’s stand-up comedy career has been on a sharp rise to the top, enjoying nominations for Best Show at both Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2016, his American television debut on Comedy Central’s Roast Battle at Montreal’s Just for Laughs Festival, his political podcast Like I’m A Six-Year-Old has just hit 100 episodes and continues to grow from strength to strength and at the end of 2016 he appeared in SBS’s ground-breaking series First Contact, a journey of discovery into Aboriginal Australia.

One of the joys that I have discovered that comes as a result of surrounding yourself with like-minded people also pursuing their own ambition and success, is that invariably you get to watch your friends rise to the challenge, share their journeys and celebrate your collective wins along the way.

Tom Ballard was certainly already well on his way to this success we first met 6 years ago, whilst launching triple j unearthed as a radio station back in 2011, but to then watch him have the courage to leave his role has co-host of the Tom & Alex morning show on triple j, take a leap of faith to achieve his dream of being a successful stand-up comedian and see where he’s at now just makes me so happy!

“Being your own master of your life and your passions, it’s a very powerful and important thing to do and if you have a chance to take it then grab it with both hands.” – Tom Ballard.

Never a truer word spoken, my man. Let’s get into the show!

Brand builder, Model & Social Media Influencer Lauren Vickers joins our LIVE show and Macleay College Advertising & Media Degree lecture in Sydney on – ‘Brands, #SocialMedia Influencers & ROI’.

I have a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye as I realize that this is one of the proudest achievements of my life thus far…

Whilst I have run global award-winning social media campaigns, with case studies on both Instagram and Twitter’s Global Business Blogs and won a Facebook Award last year and have changed the face of social media for a range of international brands including Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate, Philadelphia Cream CheesePeroni Italian Beer, Bulmers Original Cider, Cancer Council Australia & more, I do not have a university degree. In fact, I’ve dropped out of both a Bachelor of Applied Science – Biochemistry and a Masters of Entrepreneurship & Innovation degree… and yet this past month I have just become a university lecturer for the very first time.

On this week’s episode of Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet!, entrepreneur, model and theright.fit social media influencer, Lauren Vickers joins me at Macleay College’s Sydney university campus to discuss Social Media Influencer Marketing, working with high profile brands and how both brand/social media influencers should approach partnerships and content production to drive mutually beneficial Return on Investment.

Our vast ranging chats cover:
  • Lauren’s evolution from career model to Social Media Influencer with a highly engaged audience of 1.2 million Facebook fans, 169K Instagram followers and 33K+ Twitter followers.
  • Driving ecommerce for brands:
    • Via video/still content and what platforms to use.
    • By partnering with the right social media influencer.
  • TheRight.Fit influencer app and how brands are using this Australian platform to drive successful social media influencer relationships and campaigns.
  • What brands should look for when seeking a social media influencer for their brand. Genuine social media influencers Vs wannabe Instagram models (both male and female).
  • ROI and Measures of Success in the mind of the influencer and how they differ from how brand marketers view ROI?
  • Best Practice for Brands with examples from Tuscan Tan, Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate and Philadelphia Cream Cheese.
  • Top Tips for Social Media Influencers looking to generate mutually beneficial ongoing relationships with brands.
  • The Secrets of Engaging Customers Online – for both brands and social media influencers.
My ultimate in life is to get paid to do what I love for a living, whilst making a positive impact on the lives of others and so presenting to the students at Macleay College in their TV studio as part of the Social Media Strategy stream and as part of one of their 4 key assignments this first trimester of 2017, definitely ticks all of those boxes.

And I was determined to be able to share this knowledge and experience with as many possible, so Lauren and I (with the help of Macleay College and the right.fit) recorded this university lecture not only as a Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet’s weekly iTunes podcast and Bondi Beach Radio show, but the Macleay College production team also captured the video content for me for a Hot & Delicious: Rocks the Planet! social media TV pilot, which will be online on H&D digital channels VERY shortly!

Exciting times ahead and I hope you love this chat as much as I do!

Solocast! Who am I?

I have lived in 5 different countries and 10 different cities. I have blonde hair, a ginger beard, have lived a life and careers of so many lifetimes… all focused on the pursuit of loving life and The Secret to Happiness… although I didn’t always necessarily recognise it at the time.

After dropping out of university and a Swinburne University BASc Biochemistry degree through lack of passion and zero desire to be stuck in a laboratory in 10-15 years time, I have served drinks and cleaned ashtrays back of house at Melbourne’s Crown Casino, spent 6.5 years jet-setting the globe with the rock star’s lifestyle without being the rock star as an Emirates Airline flight attendant, set a life up for myself as music industry professional, driving operations & logistics for music festivals/events around Australia such as Splendour In The Grass, event production and festival photography for triple j, created a music supervisor role for Ballistyx Snowboard Show on Channel GO! managed rock & roll bands and much, much more.

My life now, is so surreal. My main crust at this stage of 2017 is as a social media strategist and content producer. I work in an industry that didn’t exist 15 years ago guiding national and global brands on their social media strategy in the digital sphere, including the likes of Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate, Peroni Italian Beer, Philadelphia Cream Cheese, Kraft Peanut Butter, Bulmers Original Cider, Miller Genuine Draft, Cancer Council Australia, Salesforce (through Mahlab Content Agency) and many more.

And all of this from a guy with no degree who dropped out of university not once… but twice! The 1st was the BASc and the 2nd a Masters of Entrepreneurship & Innovation, which I left as I was spread too thin and didn’t wish to wait 4 years to start chasing new opportunities… I’m still not convinced that you can teach entrepreneurship, but that’s another story 😉

Not only am I now back working for myself making the same ca$h money in 2.5 days/week that I was making in 5 days/week only a ago, but I am also lecturing at Macleay College in Sydney, have brand and lifestyle that I have created for myself called Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet!, I am being paid for social media influencer work through the reach of my social media channels, I have a weekly show on Bondi Beach Radio called Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! that is has also been a podcast on iTunes for 2.5 years now too and I have SO much planned for 2017.

Now… absolutely NONE of this is designed as a boast. All of this shit is real. I did this myself through a shit-ton of hard work, mistakes, early mornings and the borne of the desire to love what I do and be happy. And I’m sharing this piece not as a “Yay, me”, but because I believe that we should be living and pursuing what we love for a living and I believe that it is a life that you can have too!

In this week’s show AKA Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! solocast, I share everything that you’ve ever wanted to know about scoring that dream job that you’ve always wanted (or the one that you simply never knew existed).

I share with you The Secret to Happiness, because it’s just so simple… and I tell you what… I never knew just how close it was and at 40 I am truly the happiest that I’ve ever been… Yep, I found it!

Want it? Let’s get into it!

Breaking down cultural barriers – ‘Through These Eyes’ – with hip hop artist, Zii.

Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast series

“Wealth is an investment in other people, rather than the the riches that you have back home

From Harare, Zimbabwe to Melbourne suburbia, trail blazer and hip hop artist Zii is a man who just lights up the room with his outlook, energy and positivity.

The son of a Nobel Peace Prize winner, Zii arrived in Australia from Africa 10 years ago to pursue a career in IT and whilst mentoring a young fellow church-goer, fell in love with music himself and began pursuing the dream.

I am privileged to meet fascinating people on a weekly basis through the Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast and this one left me feeling truly inspired and with a renewed determination to strive to be a better man… we spend today’s podcast chatting openly about culture, race, religion and music… the distinct cultural and behavioural differences of how Australians interact with each other as opposed to people from the country of his birth, ‘Through These Eyes’ – an inspiring EP and project that Zii’s created to educate, challenge and change Australian perceptions and understanding of the African continent, being empowered and fuelled by his parent’s integrity and belief and inspired to greatness by Grammy Award winning American rapper, Lecrae.

Whilst we are from vastly different cultures and backgrounds, Zii’s story resonated with me and his perspective on life mirrors my own. This was the first time we’d met but I am now left buzzing with energy and excitement….

The key to breaking down barriers and understanding our fellow man no matter what their religion, race or creed is all about the desire to make world a better place by inviting people to be a part of your community, asking the right questions and seeking to make a connection.

Enjoy!

Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast series

Boom!

Sweet catch-ups by me and my dirty pornstar moustache with Tribe App founder, radio personality
& TV presenter, Jules Lund about his recent foray into the digital space and the launch of game-changing influencer platform, Tribe app.

Reebok, Sony Music, Grill’d, Contiki, Paramount Pictures and American Express are just a few brands
who have jumped on board this self-serve platform designed to match Australia’s most influential people with brands around the country.

And I’m not just talking celebrities, I am talking about everyday Australians who have built their own personal brands through early adoption, well crafted social media content and have built audiences in beauty, fashion, sport, health, travel and entertainment just by staying true to who they are and being themselves.

There are over 250,000 people in Australia with more than 5,000 followers on either Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and this is the perfect opportunity for both brands and influencers to not only cash in on a mutually beneficial relationship, but connect people with brands they want, build communities that individuals can feel a part of and create the most wonderful premium content, which in turn works to turn the tide against our social media newsfeeds being consistently populated by overly branded garbage that so many misguided brands strive to push upon consumers.

Jules and I chat about those moments when you scare the f*ck out of yourself by taking a leap of faith, being hypnotised and inspired by former AFL footballer and mentor, Jim Stynes, Adele and fake Wiki facts,  mindfulness and Smiling Mind, the wonderful guidance of Matt Berriman and Jane Martino who have helped take Tribe to another level, Sony, One Direction and a 1D fan earned some serious cash money for nail art on Instagram.. yes, I’m serious…

This podcast is one for the entrepreneurs, marketers and start-up fiends… it’s all about
empowering people, influencers creating amazing content the way they want to create it and getting paid for the pleasure.Super cool chats with Jules Lund… yes, let’s get amongst it!

Hot & Delicious USA-announcement & going solo!

Sitting here on my lunch break contemplating the last time that I made a career decision of this enormity… actually there isn’t one… or a choice really… This is BIG!

In March 2016, I’m jetting off to America for a pre-planned trip to SXSW and the latest news update is that I am in fact going to stay on in the USA for 2-3 months on a non-immigrant tourist visa.

Yes, I am finishing up my full-time role as SapientNitro Australia’s Social Media Lead, working across Cadbury Dairy Milk, Oreo, Peroni Italian Beer, Bulmers Original Cider, Philly Cream Cheese, Kraft Nuts Spreads and more, to pursue a number of exciting new business opportunities that I’ve been approached about for Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet in Australia, enjoy SXSW and take some time out in the USA.

In September, I was asked to speak at Social Media Week – Miami and afterwards, whilst on a much-need 3 week “holiday”, I ran social media for LA Podcast Festival followed by a short break in San Francisco and New York.

As a result of this trip to America, 2-3 new opportunities have come to light and while I’ll still be contracting through Hot & Delicious to Australian clients to bring in the Benjamins (until such time as I decide to pursue an O-1 or E3 USA work visa), I’ll be kickin’ it in Los Angeles interviewing international guests for the Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast, collaborating on influencer content, blogging, photography and more!

While I know that I’m being a little vague about these opportunities (one of them is MASSIVE), the long and short of it is that as a result of every single leap of faith that I’ve made along the way in my career – from dropping out of my biochemistry degree, flying to Dubai to live in the Middle East and travel the world for 6.5 years as an Emirates Airline international flight attendant, approaching Ballistyx Snowboard Show on Channel GO! about being their music supervisor despite zero experience and nailing it!, putting a 900q meter ice-rink on the sands of Bondi Beach, the first of its kind ever in the world… each one ended up being a career-changing and defining moment of my life.

And the one thing that every single one of these decisions have in common? I followed my gut instinct.. I have to do this…

There are no guarantees and the fact that I’m nervous is a good thing. It’ll push me even harder along my path and whether I return to Australia a few months later or not (there might be other countries I decide to visit), I know my life will have changed… forever… for the better.

Download the Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast now to get the exclusive on this massive decision, my journey from a childhood in Indonesia and Perth to present day and the exciting next steps in the USA from March 2016.

Amazing… I’ve got tingles!

This… this podcast just makes me happy! Sitting here with this big fuckin’, stupid grin on my face… what an interview!

English singer/songwriter Tanya Batt AKA BATTS Music
(or one half of it anyway) and I became buddies through social media and various mutual friends, then she hit me up via Twitter a few months back about guesting on the ‘Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet’ podcast after hearing my sit-down with her best friend Hayden Calnin… and I was like… yeah damn straight! Let’s do this! The Glenlivet whiskey flows and man this lady just brings inspiring conversation and energy into the room!We chat about horror movies, Tanya’s CUTEST first ever memory at the age of 2, San Francisco, her twin who died during childbirth, night terrors & sleep-walking,  the evolution of the Tanya Batt music project to approaching 30 different producers from around the world, creating music with 8 producers from 8 different countries across 8 different genres, which led to Tanya forming BATTS Music with UK-based producer Alisdair Mason AKA Ficci, the two of them sending each other tracks recorded in two bedroom studios thousands of miles across the planet which has now culminated with Tanya buying a one-way ticket to the UK, so that they can take this project to the next level! Inspirational! We spend time talking about her current pen pal in Cardiff, the music of Michael Jackson, Shirley Bassey and Nina Simone, a whole swag of amazing Australian music, the impact that producer and musician Hayden Calnin has made on her life, Tanya’s favourite podcasts (I’m hoping this is now one of them 😀), John Williams’ book ’Stoner’, BATTS Music’s latest single ‘For That I’m Sorry’, which is featured exclusively at the end of this podcast… such an amazing track!
