It’s a cool spring morning in Los Angeles as I head out to catch-up with American stand-up comedian, The Dollop and Point Vs Point podcaster, writer and actor, Gareth Reynolds.

Super hangs and we spend an hour or so kicking back on the couch at his joint riffing on the business & #SeemsLegit bullshit of Tinsel Town, LA’s untapped secrets (hikes, farmers markets and all the best vegetarian/vegan restaurants), a behind-the-scenes look at the highly popular The Dollop and Point Vs Point podcasts (this is definitely a podcast for the podcast fans including how Gareth Vs Gary came about), his favourite podcasts and story-telling in comedy, the inspiration of everyday people and what motivates Gareth Reynolds to keeping pushing forward, the hurdles involved creating a successful TV show or movie in Hollywood and much much more.

Fascinating insights by a super grounded, highly intelligent & hilarious comedian into the reality of making it in Hollywood’s entertainment industry.

Step inside our world…

I love that I’ve lived my life based on gut instinct, craving the desire to learn, evolve and constantly pursue new opportunities.

This attitude, born of a lust for life, happiness, a want to love myself and my life lead me to Los Angeles last year to run social media for LA Podcast Festival.

These days I rarely do stuff for cheap or for free, unless it’s for business development, a close friend or a cause that I believe in. In the case of LA Podfest, it’s a little of column A, but predominantly as I want to ensure that I do the right thing by the US government and only pursue work opportunities through legal channels, if & when I do have the legal right to work in the USA… but O1 Visas are a whole other story… 😃

Anyway, LA Podfest has forever changed my life – I’ve met so many wonderful people from around the world including my own podcast fans, my now producer and become friends with an array of talented, enigmatic, giving and hilarious comedians and one of those is American stand-up comedian & ‘Road Stories’ podcaster, Murray Valeriano.

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, the son of an ex-military born again preacher, Murray Valeriano has travelled and live all over the USA and eventually followed up on his dreams of living in California.

In today’s chat at my West Hollywood pad, we chat about what it was like to grow up as the son of a preacher man, the ‘Road Stories’ podcast that Murray records with top comedians about their stories and life on the road as a stand-up comic, the challenges of writing a new hour on religion in a country like America, where even daring to raise the topic can turn a crowd in seconds, my own beliefs and thoughts on religion, the best ever heckles he’s ever had, balancing his life in Santa Monica with movie industry wife and young son, Frank, with his career, podcast and surfing and lots, lots more.

I love that at a young age that I opened up my mind up to meeting new people and not being afraid to take a leap of faith based purely on gut instinct. It’s lead me to so many mind-blowing and wonderful opportunities that I’ve never dreamed of and making inspiring new friends like Murray Valeriano.

Touchdown LA!

It’s been a super intense 3.5 weeks since I landed in USA!

2 weeks in Texas exploring Dallas, a night in Houston for Rodeo Houston where I experienced a newborn calf take its first steps, small children riding shaggy sheep in front of a stadium packed with 70,000 people, ate gator for the first time and some of the fattiest food known to man and then 8 nights at the world’s largest music conference, SXSW, where I shot photos of Michelle Obama’s inspiring keynote speech with Queen Latifah, Missy Elliot and more, recorded 4.5 podcasts, shot 15-20 live music shows (incl. Wolfmother, P.O.D.) and partied the house down in Austin!

Since landing in LA last week, I’ve taken time out chillin’ in Burbank at the home of a friend on mine, Troy Conrad, the creator and co-producer of the improvised stand-up show, ‘Set List: Stand-Up Without A Net’, a TV series on Sky Atlantic in the UK, and on ABC2 in Australia.

For those not familiar with California, Burbank is a beautiful part of Los Angeles at the base of the mountains about 30 minutes from downtown Hollywood and the home to most of the major American movie-making studios. It’s been a lovely recharge with long daily hikes through Brand Park and Wildwood Canyon trails after the madness of packing up my life in Australia, writing and shooting a TV pilot in the 2-3 weeks before I left, pitching for brand partnerships, quitting my full-time job and this first few weeks of 90 days in the USA.

Anyway, in today’s podcast Troy and I talk about the how his and Paul Provenza’s TV show Setlist came to be, the wonderful array of inspiring guests they’ve had including Robin Williams, Australian comedian Wil Anderson, his multiple-award winning short film, Runyon: Just Above Sunset, starring Eddie PeptoneThe Comedy Jesus Show, touring throughout the USA and around the world to comedy festivals including Montreal, Dublin, Calgary, Vancouver, Edinburgh, Melbourne, Sydney, London and much, much more.

Super inspiring chats with a highly intelligent and inspiring guy who is quite literally living the dream!

Hot & Delicious fresh out of the blocks with Social Media strategy & content for your brand.

Social Media Strategy, Content Production, Monthly Social Media Calendars, Community Management & Reporting

Yes, after 2.5 years as Social Media Lead for SapientNitro in Australia driving social media for Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate, Peroni Italian Beer, Bulmers Original Cider, Oreo, Philly Cream Cheese, Kraft Peanut Butter & more, I’ve decided to jump back into the freelance world.

In my time at SapientNitro, we’ve changed the way our clients play in the social media space with innovative thinking, exciting brand building and social media-led campaigns

Some of the highlights include:

I am both proud and excited to have helped transform the way not only our clients do business, but the way SapientNitro operates in the social media space.

When I first joined SapientNitro in July 2013, the Australian arm of the business had never focussed on social media clients before. During my time at the agency, with the support of our global social teams in Miami, New York, Chicago, Atlanta and Toronto, we transformed the Melbourne office into a digitally-focussed business, creating internal ways of working, crisis management & escalation procedures, content production and community management processes, reporting templates, social listening and analytics tool assessment/review, pitch document creation for successful pitches and more.

SapientNitro is now a thriving full-service agency providing clients with a range of specialist social media services including social media strategy, monthly calendar content creation – social media copywriting, photography and video production, monthly reporting and community management (moderation, crisis management and escalation).

But now, it’s my time… I want to take the learnings I brought to SapientNitro and have been adopted by our clients, as well as those key learnings they haven’t been able to adopt, to further build my own brand, Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet, and that of my clients, who crave a forward-thinking digital brand of their own. I want to partner with agencies, brands and clients to create audience-centric content that’s built for the user experience and drives the brand awareness/Reach that ultimately drive foot traffic/sales for their respective businesses.

And that now starts with you…

If you, your agency, your business, your brand or your client are looking to transform the way you approach social media then your journey starts now.

Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast series

What I love about my life is that every single important career decision that I’ve made has been the result of taking a leap of faith…

12 months ago I didn’t know Graham Elwood and Chris Mancini AKA Comedy Film Nerds, creators of Ear Buds: The Podcast Documentary
and 2 of the 4 founders of LA Podcast Festival… and here we are… January 2016, now mates and working on several wicked projects, brought together by the power of podcasting! In May last year after recording a Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast with American comedian, podcast and 1 of LA Podfest co-founder, Dave Anthony, I approached Dave about having Hot & Delicious join the line-up and drive social media for LA Podcast Festival.
Flash forward 8 months and I’m sitting in a Melbourne CBD hotel room recording a podcast with the Comedy Film Nerds duo about their Ear Buds: The Podcast Documentary launch, LA Podfest and the Australian Star Wars – The Force Awakens premiere, which one of the CFN podcast fans, Eric Cullen, stumped up $5K cash so that Graham and Chris could fly halfway across the world to attend the premiere, then record a dual Star Wars spoiler podcast episode collaboration with Steele Saunders for Steele Wars and Comedy Film Nerds.
Today we chat about jetting to New York, Japan, outback Australia and around the globe to film the Ear Buds: The Podcast Documentary (due out in 2016), raising $140K in 40 days on Kickstarter and only hitting the target 30 minutes before deadline, how podcasting is changing the USA showbiz machine, building digital communities and the impact that podcasting has had on our respective lives, geeking out over the Star Wars – The Force Awakens premiere, including our Star Wars memories from childhood and how it’s part of the driving force 😉 for Graham and Chris in their careers today, LA Podcast Festival and so much more…If you’re a Comedy Film Nerds fan, a Star Wars tragic, podcast lover or a die-hard movie groupie, then this is the episode for you… I’ve already had a sneak peak of the Ear Buds: The Podcast Documentary and it is a beauty!

Here… we… go…

Breaking down cultural barriers – ‘Through These Eyes’ – with hip hop artist, Zii.

“Wealth is an investment in other people, rather than the the riches that you have back home

From Harare, Zimbabwe to Melbourne suburbia, trail blazer and hip hop artist Zii is a man who just lights up the room with his outlook, energy and positivity.

The son of a Nobel Peace Prize winner, Zii arrived in Australia from Africa 10 years ago to pursue a career in IT and whilst mentoring a young fellow church-goer, fell in love with music himself and began pursuing the dream.

I am privileged to meet fascinating people on a weekly basis through the Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast and this one left me feeling truly inspired and with a renewed determination to strive to be a better man… we spend today’s podcast chatting openly about culture, race, religion and music… the distinct cultural and behavioural differences of how Australians interact with each other as opposed to people from the country of his birth, ‘Through These Eyes’ – an inspiring EP and project that Zii’s created to educate, challenge and change Australian perceptions and understanding of the African continent, being empowered and fuelled by his parent’s integrity and belief and inspired to greatness by Grammy Award winning American rapper, Lecrae.

Whilst we are from vastly different cultures and backgrounds, Zii’s story resonated with me and his perspective on life mirrors my own. This was the first time we’d met but I am now left buzzing with energy and excitement….

The key to breaking down barriers and understanding our fellow man no matter what their religion, race or creed is all about the desire to make world a better place by inviting people to be a part of your community, asking the right questions and seeking to make a connection.

Enjoy!

Boom!

Sweet catch-ups by me and my dirty pornstar moustache with Tribe App founder, radio personality
& TV presenter, Jules Lund about his recent foray into the digital space and the launch of game-changing influencer platform, Tribe app.

Reebok, Sony Music, Grill’d, Contiki, Paramount Pictures and American Express are just a few brands
who have jumped on board this self-serve platform designed to match Australia’s most influential people with brands around the country.

And I’m not just talking celebrities, I am talking about everyday Australians who have built their own personal brands through early adoption, well crafted social media content and have built audiences in beauty, fashion, sport, health, travel and entertainment just by staying true to who they are and being themselves.

There are over 250,000 people in Australia with more than 5,000 followers on either Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and this is the perfect opportunity for both brands and influencers to not only cash in on a mutually beneficial relationship, but connect people with brands they want, build communities that individuals can feel a part of and create the most wonderful premium content, which in turn works to turn the tide against our social media newsfeeds being consistently populated by overly branded garbage that so many misguided brands strive to push upon consumers.

Jules and I chat about those moments when you scare the f*ck out of yourself by taking a leap of faith, being hypnotised and inspired by former AFL footballer and mentor, Jim Stynes, Adele and fake Wiki facts,  mindfulness and Smiling Mind, the wonderful guidance of Matt Berriman and Jane Martino who have helped take Tribe to another level, Sony, One Direction and a 1D fan earned some serious cash money for nail art on Instagram.. yes, I’m serious…

This podcast is one for the entrepreneurs, marketers and start-up fiends… it’s all about
empowering people, influencers creating amazing content the way they want to create it and getting paid for the pleasure.Super cool chats with Jules Lund… yes, let’s get amongst it!

Hot & Delicious USA-announcement & going solo!

Sitting here on my lunch break contemplating the last time that I made a career decision of this enormity… actually there isn’t one… or a choice really… This is BIG!

In March 2016, I’m jetting off to America for a pre-planned trip to SXSW and the latest news update is that I am in fact going to stay on in the USA for 2-3 months on a non-immigrant tourist visa.

Yes, I am finishing up my full-time role as SapientNitro Australia’s Social Media Lead, working across Cadbury Dairy Milk, Oreo, Peroni Italian Beer, Bulmers Original Cider, Philly Cream Cheese, Kraft Nuts Spreads and more, to pursue a number of exciting new business opportunities that I’ve been approached about for Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet in Australia, enjoy SXSW and take some time out in the USA.

In September, I was asked to speak at Social Media Week – Miami and afterwards, whilst on a much-need 3 week “holiday”, I ran social media for LA Podcast Festival followed by a short break in San Francisco and New York.

As a result of this trip to America, 2-3 new opportunities have come to light and while I’ll still be contracting through Hot & Delicious to Australian clients to bring in the Benjamins (until such time as I decide to pursue an O-1 or E3 USA work visa), I’ll be kickin’ it in Los Angeles interviewing international guests for the Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast, collaborating on influencer content, blogging, photography and more!

While I know that I’m being a little vague about these opportunities (one of them is MASSIVE), the long and short of it is that as a result of every single leap of faith that I’ve made along the way in my career – from dropping out of my biochemistry degree, flying to Dubai to live in the Middle East and travel the world for 6.5 years as an Emirates Airline international flight attendant, approaching Ballistyx Snowboard Show on Channel GO! about being their music supervisor despite zero experience and nailing it!, putting a 900q meter ice-rink on the sands of Bondi Beach, the first of its kind ever in the world… each one ended up being a career-changing and defining moment of my life.

And the one thing that every single one of these decisions have in common? I followed my gut instinct.. I have to do this…

There are no guarantees and the fact that I’m nervous is a good thing. It’ll push me even harder along my path and whether I return to Australia a few months later or not (there might be other countries I decide to visit), I know my life will have changed… forever… for the better.

Download the Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast now to get the exclusive on this massive decision, my journey from a childhood in Indonesia and Perth to present day and the exciting next steps in the USA from March 2016.

Amazing… I’ve got tingles!

“Why would I waste my time working for someone else when I can pour myself into something I love?”

Playwrite lead singer & keys player, Jordan White, has had the most wonderful upbringing – the son of a dancer/choreographer and a singer/director, Jordan spent his childhood traveling the world of musical theatre to Broadway, West End, Singapore, Hong Kong and more.

We begin today’s podcast with the story behind Playwrite’s powerful debut album ‘Cathedrals’, a wonderful work of art and band born of the tragedy of the Black Saturday Fires, Australia’s highest ever loss of life from a series of bushfires and one of the worst disasters in Australian history, where fellow band mate and best friend Patrick Holcombe lost his parents whilst trying to save their home in Kinglake, Victoria.I’m brought to the verge of tears as I remember these cataclysmic events, forever etched in the memories of Victorians – one of my best mates, Nick was a Country Fire Authority volunteer, fighting the fires in the Kinglake area and ferrying people to safety or another friend, Shayne, who is a State Emergency Service volunteer, whose job it was during the Black Saturday Fires to check burnt out cars and other vehicles for people trapped inside… Tears…From the ashes of sadness, we build through the podcast from this tough start to discuss the positivity and the powerful resilience of those individuals in our lives who’ve evolved into pillars of strength from great diversity, Jordan White’s determination to eliminate the fear and eliminate the self-doubt by recording an album a month for the year of 2015 through his solo project Braille Face, YOWO young women’s music program, Marriage Equality, the ‘one arm up, one arm down’ philosophy to ambition and success, David Burns & the physiological impact of music, a mum who left school at the end of Year 8 to dance in Evita and subsequently ended up being able to buy her parents a house as a result, the magic of musical theatre, parents who performed in the original cast of Cats and the impact that musical theatre has made on Jordan’s attitude towards his fans and the band’s live performance, … Powerful chats and just so much goodness…Playwrite and their music have made a massive impact on my life; I seriously get chills every single time I listen to their music, they lift me up when I’m feeling flat and wow… you should see them live! ✨Enjoy the podcast and remember “Do what feels right, follow your gut instinct and pull the trigger!”
