Strangers lead singer Ben Britton & I met at the world’s largest music, film and interactive conference, South By South West (SXSW) back in 2013 when his kick-ass Australian heavy rock band Strangers were selected to play the conference and was I immediately blown away by their explosive live set in the basement at The Aussie BBQ Australian showcase event in Austin (Texas).
The Aussie BBQ SXSW boasted an A-grade line-up of the likes Vance Joy, Hiatus Kaiyote, Flume, Emma Louse, Seth Sentry, 360, Dune Rats, Clairy Browne & the Bangin’ Rackettes, Alpine, Jackson Firebird, San Cisco, The Rubens, Jack Carty, Gold Fields, The Beards, The Falls & shit-tons more… 37 amazing Australian bands and artists playing 3 stages in one venue across 13 hours in Texas!!!! Blew my mind!
And for those who haven’t been before, the most wonderful thing about touring the USA with Sounds Australia and all the Aussie bands performing every year at SXSW is that you spend time with your music industry peeps that you know from back home whom you haven’t seen for ages, make a whole swag of new music biz friends and soak up the most beautiful and generous sense of community that Austin and SXSW have on offer. Benny and I kept bumping into each other at different bars and live music showcases around Austin, became buddies that week and I was quite struck by what a friendly, chatty and genuine dude he is.
Flash forward 4 years and I am super excited to feature Strangers launch of their 2nd album ‘Mirrorland’ on Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! Benny and I catch-up to discuss just what it’s like for Australian artists/bands looking to take on SXSW, the differences between the Melbourne and Sydney music scenes, He generously shares his experiences battling anxiety and mental health, which have come to be a massive learning experience and part of the ‘Mirrorland’ album and yep, I’ll even give you an exclusive sneak peek of 3 tracks from the new album by just simply downloading the podcast.
Over the next 2 weeks this Sydney born, Melbourne based 4-piece are carving out their next steps with 2 explosive ‘Mirrorland’ album launch shows in Melbourne (Saturday Just 1st – The Evelyn Hotel) and Sydney (Friday July 14th – The Chippo Hotel).
Last time I saw them play in Texas, Benny was on some dude’s shoulders in the crowd singing mid-set, the guitarist brought his axe out into the crowd too and then I think Mr. Britton capped it all off by stage-diving back ONTO the stage and tackling the drummer and drum-kit in one fell swoop… Now THAT’s what I’m talkin’ ‘bout!
Download this shit and come see the show with me in Sydney! #GetSome #RocknRoll 🤘🏼✨🎸
PODCAST – #70 Tigertown – SXSW podcast – Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet
“It won’t happen overnight, but it will happen” 😉
With 2.6M+ plays of their ‘Lonely Cities’ single in the past 7 weeks since it’s release and their 2nd SXSW appearance in just 2 years, Tigertown are taking the world by storm. Very exciting times!
I’m almost certain that one of the key reasons that Tigertown are one of the hottest Aussie pop acts floating around the music scene at the moment is that they are family. The band consists of 3 siblings and a husband and wife – and the way that they interact with each other when together just warms my heart. Cheeky banter, supportive and loving all at the same time.
In today’s thoroughly inspiring and enlightening podcast, we explore the impact that Johnny Cash, Michael Jackson and their dad have made on their collective lives, each of their earliest ever memories, Spotify, Apple Music and music piracy, travelling in Rajasthan (India), mastering your craft and staying true to your dreams.
And did I tell you about the ‘Lonely Cities’ EP? Wicked uplifting jams perfect for that beautiful, summer road trip! Get on it!

Pocket rocket alert! Pumped!
Off to see Bec Laughton tonight at The Toff In Town. I first met Bec back in Austin (TX) last year at South By South West when I was there shooting pics for the Sounds Australia and The Aussie BBQ. Bumped into Bec quite a number of times at SXSW and what I noticed about her that week is a magic little smile that sets the room alight wherever she goes, amazing stage presence, energy and damn.. can that girl sing!
After galavanting the globe yet again, Bec Laughton has dropped her latest bit of magic, the new M & R EP, simultaneously releasing the title track and video of the same name, complete with national Australian tour. Can’t wait to hear these jams live tonight!
So much soul and so fuckin’ sexy!

I can still tell you the first time I saw Georgia Fair live.
Severely hungover after four days of partying hard in L.A. in the lead-up to SXSW, I had my first taste at The Aussie BBQ – LA showcase, as the latest wicked Aussie talent took to the global stage.
Instantly captivated, Georgia Fair swiftly became a part of my USA tour listening rotation, shooting them live twice in the next week in Austin (TX) at the Sounds Australia – Sound Gallery on 6th St and The Aussie BBQ – Official SXSW Showcase.
Now Georgia Fair are back with their latest single ‘Love Free Me’ and I couldn’t be more excited!
Recorded in Los Angeles, ‘Love Free Me’ evokes exciting flashbacks of my first music biz trip to the USA earlier this year and yes this edgy, folk rock jam has me soaring!

WIDE OPEN ROAD at SXSW 2013
617 E 7th STREET AUSTIN
FEATURING LIVE PERFORMANCE BY 360
One of the key Australian music events at South-By-South-West 2013 was the ‘Wide Open Road’ private party held by Big Day Out, C3 Presents, Sounds Australia and Screen Producers Association of Australia
The inaugural Wide Open Road event took place at Holy Mountain with details of The Big Day Out Evolution Grant announcement revealed, speeches by Glenn Dickie (Sounds Australia) and Adam Zammit (Big Day Out CEO), before Aussie rapper 360 hit the stage to get the party vibe flowing with an upbeat showcase performance.
The Big Day Out Evolution Grant will be awarded to collective groups who combine film making, digital interactive and music production to create a new annual innovation, invention or theatrical event.
Executive Director, Matthew Deaner of SPAA says “This initiative encourages creative collaboration between Australian independent producers and content creators of film, interactive media and music and it provides an opportunity for these creative industries to work together on a project that engages and excites audiences in a way they have never experienced before.”
“Australia is a large country and full of people with amazing and progressive ideas. SXSW creates an event each year that attracts a lot of these minds into one city. Our hope is that Wide Open Road will bring creatives from all across Australia together in one room and that it becomes an incubator for new fresh and progressive collaborations across all 3 mediums.” Millie Millgate, Sounds Australia
THE BIG DAY OUT EVOLUTION GRANT
A $20,000 Development Grant for innovations and invention using interactive,
film and production in the advancement of the live music experience.
“We are at an important live production crossroads. Advances in multimedia production are enabling live performances to bring all of the power of film making to the stage, from projection, to lighting to even 3D. Advances in audience engagement, encompassing feedback, physical tracking, mobile technology, and social media have the potential to bring the audience into an artists stage show in ways that we can only imagine.” Adam Zammit, CEO, Big Day Out
The creation & development of ongoing local, national and global partnerships is crucial for the continued growth of Australian music on the international stage and one that Hot & Delicious is fully behind. We can only hope that Australian music industry leaders (both here & abroad) continue to inspire and take their seat at the table.
It all begins with the first step.
