Welcome back to the 2nd ever Sh*t To Do This Weekend!

I am a super active, outdoors person and so if you’re anything like me, then you are craving new shit to do in isolation this weekend to keep from losing your shit! Escape the conversation around COVID19 this weekend. Here are the hot tips for this weekend for all of you legends in lockdown!

MUSIC ON THIS WEEKEND – LIVESTREAM + TV:
ANZAC Day Dawn Service Livestreams – Saturday 25th April:
ANZAC Day is a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand that broadly commemorates all Australians and New Zealanders “who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations” and “the contribution and suffering of all those who have served”. The ANZAC acronym stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. To learn more, check out my Aussie trek to Gallipoli – ANZAC Day 85th Anniversary Gallipoli trip blog & podcastthat journals my trip to southern Turkey to experience ANZAC Day on the Gelibolu (Gallipoli) Peninsula.

LEARN TO MEDITATE – lose all your anxiety/stress and feel more chilled.

From beginner to experienced. Explore these 3 apps to find what you love. I never thought I’d try meditation and 6 years ago I tried for 5 minutes a day for 5 days and it changed my life! The tightness in my chest… gone… and a daily natural high. I did it this morning at 5am and helped me fall back to sleep and calm my mind. If you’re now saying your mind is too busy for meditation, I am still exactly the same and that is exactly the reason why.

SHIT TO MAKE YOU LAUGH:

GET IN ON THE PODCAST ACTION!

ONE WAVE TRI-WEEKLY SURFING AND MENTAL HEALTH ZOOM CHATS:

OneWave is a non-profit surf community raising awareness of mental health through a simple recipe…saltwater therapy, surfing and fluro. During lockdown, instead of meeting up for Fluro Friday every Friday morning at over 200 beaches worldwide, the team have taken to meeting online twice for week for global get togethers and Zoom calls to share our collective experiences and how we’re all getting through COVID19 in isolation. They have made SUCH a massive impact for me personally and helped me feel connected during lockdown!

I have zero desire to be another one of those generic, self-appointed Instagram “life coaches” or influencers that have popped up during this crisis, however I do have an audience and I want to be able to help the people in my world through this challenging time. Feel free to share the love, hit me back if you love this list and follow me on social media too! (social media links are below too).

If you have more sections that I think you should add to this, then hit me up with your ideas! Happy weekend y’all!

OneWave bi-weekly mental and surfing Zoom chats:

OneWave is a non-profit surf community raising awareness of mental health through a simple recipe…saltwater therapy, surfing and fluro. This past 2 weeks, instead of meeting up for Fluro Friday every Friday morning at over 200 beaches worldwide, the team have taken to meeting online twice for week for global get togethers and Zoom calls to share our collective experiences and how we’re all getting through COVID19 in isolation. Big wins and all welcome!

I have been chatting with my parents and sister this week about us collectively finding things that make us laugh, make us happy and keep us occupied this this strange time. We shared ours with each other and I’ve been sharing meditation links and other resources with peeps on the One Wave (a surfing and mental health community) Zoom calls this past week or so, so I figured that I should actually put them all in one place for my friends and people in my world to discover and utilise at will.

I have zero desire to be another one of those generic, self-appointed Instagram “life coaches” or influencers that have popped up in this past week, however I do have an audience and I want to be able to help the people in my world through this challenging time for all of us if I can, if that makes sense?

If you’ve got more sections that I think you should add to this, then hit me up with your ideas! Happy weekend y’all!

The Secret to Happiness – Hot & Delicious catch-up with Smiling Mind app

Video Posted on Updated on

Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast series

Interview #11 – Smiling Mind app (tech/innovation)

Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome back to ‘Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet for 2015’. Last year, as existing fans will know, we caught up with Aussie comedian & TV presenter Will Anderson, kick-ass Aussie indie rockers The Griswolds, Regan Lethbridge from awesome Melbourne-based band Bonjah, fashion blogger Winston & Willow and so many more wonderful people.

I must apologise profusely for taking a longer break over the Christmas period than planned – but the 2nd half of 2014 saw me working 60-80 weeks, I must admit I was just exhausted and didn’t want to come back until I could dedicate my time and energy 100% to this new project that I love so much.

2015 is going to be a super year for the podcast, where we take things to another level – coming up over the next few months are interviews with social entrepreneur and founder of Thank You Group, Daniel Flynn, the enigmatic Carlo Santone and Natalie Rize of world-renown Aussie urban roots band Blue King Brown, a whole swag of Australian and international comedians as the buzz of Melbourne International Comedy Festival hits Australia and so much more. I am pumped!

I love this podcast episode. It’s 5:45am and I can’t sleep as I’m still buzzing and inspired by last night’s chat with the team at Smiling Mind meditation app. One of the main reasons I started ‘Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet’ is to chat with people who are doing what they love and who inspire me. In today’s podcast I get to hang out with Lucy Richards and Georgie Reed, two of the first people involved in the launch of Smiling Mind app.

Launched in Australia a few years ago, Smiling Mind now has over 500K users from aged 7 to young adults, business people like myself and even people my parents’ age. Smiling Mind’s 500,000+ users are living all over the globe and the app was recently featured in the New York Times.

I am not exaggerating when I say that meditation and Smiling Mind have changed my life. I first came across the app about a year and a half ago when I was chatting with Georgie’s partner, Rob, at a work lunch. He was singing the praises on how using this app on a daily basis had brought a certain calm and balance to his insanely hectic life as part of the Carlton Dry brand team at Carlton & United Breweries. He told me how his partner Georgie had left her job at a media agency to join this start-up called Smiling Mind.

Now I’ve had people speak with me about meditation and mindfulness a little previously, including one of my friends, the wonderful Narissa Doumani, who in fact launches her book in a month ‘A Spacious Life – Memoir of a Meditator’ (and we’ll be dropping an episode with her in a few weeks), but for me and I’m sure most people who now have meditation and mindfulness as a part of their life, to start meditating you’ve got to be in a place when you’re desperate to try anything to get some peace, calm in your life or just be curious enough to try.

For me it was the former. I’m not exaggerating or boasting when I say that I’ve done so many cool things in my life – I’ve lived in 4 different countries in Australia, Asia, Europe and the Middle East, put a 900 square metre ice-rink on the sands of Bondi Beach (the first of it’s kind anywhere in the world), created a role as the music supervisor of a snowboard show called Ballistyx Snowboard Show on Channel GO!, run music festivals & events around Australia, worked as a music festival photographer & run social media for a music festival, traveled the world for 6.5 years as an international flight attendant with Emirates Airline, the list goes on… but my whole life I always felt I was either running towards or running away from something (to steal a phrase coined by one of my fave podcasters). For the past 20 years of my life, I have had an unquenchable thirst for success and a happiness that I’ve never quite found. I have all these amazing things I’ve done/going on in my life and yet a year and a half ago I felt stressed out, always seemed to have that tightness of anxiety or dread in my chest and I was miserable… something had to change.

Now those of you who know me know that I don’t believe in God, but what I can say is that I am very spiritual. I used to think that exercise was all I needed to feel good, but even that wasn’t enough and not quite the tonic I was after. I’ve spent my life life wishing I was somewhere else… a little bit further down the path to my success… in 6 months I’ll achieve this goal and I’ll be happy, in 12 months I’ll be making this much money and I’ll be happy…. no… quite simply no. This podcast, in parts, may sound a little like we’re trying to sell Smiling Mind and to be honest, it’s almost impossible not to – each of the 3 of us are already sold on its virtues and the impact it’s made on our own lives. My whole life, I’ve gone my own way not wanting to conform or be dictated by society’s viewpoint on how I should live my life, the black sheep if you will… and yet with this… it just fits.

I am still as ambitious as ever, yet for the first time in my life I am living each and moment in the now. I walk down the street and unplug my headphones just to observe the people around me, to hear the birds singing and simply soak up the sounds of the city. When I’m out with friends for dinner, invariably people will be having a phone party at the table, shooting this foodporn for Instagram or checking-in at that place on Facebook. My phone pretty much always stays in my pocket these days. The only place I want to be now is here – in the moment. Mediation and the Smiling Mind app have helped me achieve a certain mindfulness. Now I crave, soak up and appreciate each moment I’m in and so that any time I feel like I’m stressed out or angry, it’s the key tool I utilize that pulls me back into check and gets me back in sync.

I’m going to step-off now and let you get into it. The first 1-2 minutes is a little disjointed as we were having some tech issues with the mics, then we chat about social media for about 6 minutes before kicking into the podcast proper at about 8 minutes, but make sure you listen to it all as there is some gold in there for any of you who are keen to get some advice on how social media works.

All I can say about Smiling Mind and this episode, is that if you’ve ever wanted ongoing peace and happiness in your life, you are actually really fucking close… I use this app and meditation in general about 5 times a week and the impact it’s made on my life is that big that it’s almost intangible. I wasn’t a cynic previously, but I just didn’t feel like it was for me, but after setting myself the goal of starting with 4-5 sessions in 5 days I can honestly say that meditation and mindfulness will be a part of my life forever and I won’t look back, so thank you Smiling Mind.

Enjoy

Christmas Eve 2014. Kickin’ it here on St Kilda Beach pier with this view. Amazing start to the day and pretty spectacular!

While I am exhausted and still winding down from 6 months of 60-80 hour weeks (between agency work and my own biz), I am at peace.

Agency life has been insane having gone from overseeing the social media for 2 global brands to 6 brands with more on the way in the new year.

In the 2nd half of 2014, my first love and passion project Hot & Delicious Group, has also taken several significant steps with the launch of my “Photographic Tales of an ex-Emirates flight attendant” photography travel series and the “Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet” podcast series, which captures 1-on-1 audio interviews with inspiring people and entrepreneurs across a range of industries that fuel the fire of my own inspiration, personal business ambitions and the desire to inspire up & coming dreamers who aspire to their own success.

I am quite excited for the year ahead and while I’m not a New Years resolution kind-of-guy, I already have a swag of plans for the ‘Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet’ project including ramping up the profile of podcast & guests, kicking back into my own music, holding a “Photographic Tales of an ex-Emirates flight attendant” photo exhibition, creating a new ‘Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet’ website to start tapping into other revenue streams and sounding out global business opportunities.

Now to the outsider and friends who know me a little, this probably sounds like the standard year of unwavering ambition, but in reality, despite being exhausted right now I am at peace and energized all at the same time.

I’m at peace because if there’s one area of self that I’ve developed this year it is this… My ambition for the future is only strengthened by soaking up & living each moment. And what is the one key thing that’s helped me achieve this? Meditation. I shit you not.

In my very first post for 2014, “2 days ago I woke up to a beach sunrise over the ocean, sand & the waves at my feet.. 2014.. I’m ready..”  the final paragraph finished as follows:

Living in the moment is what I want to see more of from myself this year and not a concept that’s new to me, but taking time out to reflect & enjoy is where we get fresh energy, a sense of calm and it’s in this headspace where the fresh ideas & magic flow.. 2014.. I’m ready..

Meditation started for me when I got to a point in my year and my life when exercise alone wasn’t enough to keep me fresh and clear-headed – I realized that despite living a wicked existence and working on many amazing projects over the past 20 years of my life, that I wasn’t happy, craved some quiet in my mind and inner peace in my heart.

Being time-poor and not a true-believer of meditation at the time, I began setting aside 10 minutes every morning after my daily workout and tried out free meditation app Smiling Mind, which was recommended to me by a friend of mine. This meant that the skeptic in me could trial meditation without giving up too much of my time.

After a period of meditating regularly using Smiling Mind, I began to get bored of just using the app all the time; in my life I crave variety and so I brought other styles of meditation in to combine with Smiling Mind so that I could mix it up and keep my meditation sessions fresh. I evolved to trying different forms of meditation including listening to a 10 minute track of waves washing gently upon a beach that I downloaded from iTunes, taking time out on my lunch-break to sit in the sunshine listening to relaxing songs I love and focusing on the music/lyrics whilst breathing steadily or quite simply even meditating in silence with my iPhone on timer.

Almost immediately I noticed the difference and over the coming weeks and months I found myself unplugging from music and podcasts whilst traveling to work or from place to place, varying my route to our South Melbourne office in search of visual inspiration and the peace of a few deep breaths whilst enjoying another Melbourne sunset. Come Christmas and I’ve spent the past 4 days pretty much hanging out by myself doing something new and different every day – chilling by the beach reading books, a long cafe breakfast and the morning paper while everyone else is at work, photography down by the water at St Kilda, lunchtime beers in the sunshine at Ponyfish Island, shopping down at the markets for fresh deli treats, summer fruits and veggies… so many simple everyday pleasures that make me happy.

Thence what started as daily 10 minute meditation sessions grew to me enjoying and being mindful of the peace and joy in everyday moments that can occur multiple times every single day. It’s even got to the stage where I’m conscious of when I haven’t had enough meditation or these moments and know exactly what I need to even myself out.

This sense of mindfulness and almost perpetual state of peace (with multiple daily sense-checks of course), has lead to one of my most productive years of late despite supposedly having less time to cram it in.

I can honestly say for the first time in my life that instead of spending my days wishing for my future successful self that we all envision and crave, that I am happy and thrive on the pure joy of the here & now, whilst still fuelled with my ambition for the future. And that’s made me a better, more efficient and more successful as a person, colleague, family member and friend.

I am truly excited for 2015 and have many goals that I wish to achieve including a serious increase in travel, personal business growth and a swag of others as stated above, but if I can keep on this path of mindfulness, appreciating and living everyday moments, whilst fuelling ambition for the future, I have no doubt this will be a very, very exciting year indeed 🙂

Thank you one and all for listening and reading, especially those who’ve supported myself, the blog and the podcast this year.

I wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

DW

P.S. I will be taking the opportunity to recoup from the madness of 2014 from Xmas to New Years Day by switching off all social media technology and taking the opportunity for catch-ups with friends and little day trips to the beach and countryside to clear my head and get back a little bit of sanity. And yes, if you found this article via Twitter, LinkedIn or Facebook, I scheduled this shit so feel free to message me but you won’t get a reply until January 😉

Today’s podcast chat is with Regan LethbridgeBonjah’s lead guitarist, booking agent at 123 Agency and band manager at Lemon Tree Music.

Eddie Vedder impressions, finding, losing and then re-capturing true love, busking on the streets of Melbourne to being one of Australia’s premier rock bands of the independent scene. Loved catching up with Regs and here’s just one little gem that I left the podcast with that’s applicable to all you aspiring musicians out there.

“At the end of the day, all the bullshit aside… it comes down to good songs and if you got a good song there, and you’ve got a good team and you got a little bit of luck you’re in with a sniff.”

Beauty Is Everywhere – using everyday moments in daily life as an opportunity to recharge.

Posted on Updated on

For any entrepreneur or those with entrepreneurial mindsets, the double-edged sword of always being switched-on, every waking hour of the day, means that having tools at the ready to enable you to take time out from your lifestyle/busy mind to reset & recharge are crucial.

Even as we speak, it’s Sunday for me & I promised myself I’d stay away from the laptop and yet here I am chasing the weekly biz blog I promised myself I’d write every week in 2014.. justified it to myself in that it’s both a personal and biz blog that helps feed my creative thirst, plus the lines between both elements of my life (by design) are so close that they’re heavily blurred 😉

What’s not blurred though is that I’ve known for quite some time that to stay healthy in body & mind there are both planned and impromptu moments in everyday life that I can employ to stay fresh & clear. For me these days, aside from the obvious relatively healthy diet and exercise, are meditation and a little thing I like to call #BeautyIsEverywhere.

#BeautyIsEverywhere:

While I didn’t invent #BeautyIsEverywhere, for Hot & Delicious the #BeautyIsEverywhere hashtag is dedicated to those everyday moments of beauty in nature (or man-made) that I utilize to reset, recharge & inspire myself at a time in my life when I’m super driven, living on the edge of my seat and at the wheel driving a 1000 miles per hour.

Daily on my way to work, heading down to the shops or out for a night on the town, I’m constantly taking snapshots with my eyes. Some images are captured on my smartphone and make their to the internet through the various Hot & Delicious social channels and others I just soak up with a deep breath, a smile and savour as mine alone.

Whether it be #skyporn, a beautiful beach setting, street-art, flowers, architecture or whatever it is that floats you away, it’s important to keep your busy mind aware and open to the surroundings around you. These little hits of endorphins can make your day, help keep a clear mind & ideas flowing that can change the world!

Hit me up on Instagram: @hotndelicious, on Tumblr or Twitter @hotndelicious

Feel free to tag @hotndelicious and in your #BeautyIsEverywhere hashtags as I’d love your recharge moments to be mine also.
