My name is Dan Wilkinson. I am a global award-winning social media strategist, university lecturer, speaker, podcaster and content producer with experience across FMCG, Travel, Beer/Alcohol brands, B2B, Not-For-Profit, Augmented Reality, Tech/Apps, Fintech, Health & Wellness, Cosmetics, Health Insurance & more.

I drive strategy for medium to large size enterprises, both agency and client-side, our business is going from strength-to-strength and that growth has lead us to currently have capacity for 1-2 new inspired clients to join our stable.

Over the past 2 years, my biz Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet!, has worked with Cancer Council Australia, Moula fintech, The Bravery, Dos Equis (via FWRD Agency), Cherry Blooms global cosmetics brand, Mahlab Agency (a global B2B digital client, hbf insurance), REBORN Agency and Transplant Australia providing a range of services including a full audit of organisational digital ecosystems and assets, development of 2-3 year strategic roadmaps, Best Practice Social Media Playbooks, development of Digital Media Reporting frameworks, Business-As-Usual/Campaign ideation, organizational training workshops, Issues & Crisis Management Escalation procedures/management, development of brand influencer networks and setting up of agency/client internal/external ways of working systems and processes.

Prior to stepping back into freelance world, I was the Social Media Lead for SapientNitro Australia, changing the face of social media for a range of international brands including Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate, Philadelphia Cream Cheese, Peroni Italian Beer, Miller Genuine Draft, Bulmers Original Cider, Strongbow & many more.

As to the type of client(s) we’re looking for?

Either client-side or agency-side and the 3 key things that I look for in new biz opportunities/roles/clients are:

  1. Digitally progressive – you are a digitally progressive business/brand or you want to be (if you’re not there yet then, you want to pay someone who is and can bring you up to speed).
  2. Corporate Culture/Champion of the People – you foster a culture of inclusiveness from the top down and that is evident in the energy/experience of the people who work with you at all levels.
  3. Champion Great Work – contractors and employees describe your business approach as one that fosters big ideas and proactivity. Industry leaders not followers.

As an example, I recently I wrapped a short-term contract as Head of Social Media at Soap Creative on the Microsoft, PepsiCo (snacking) and Ferrero portfolios, including the likes of Doritos, Tic Tac, Kinder Surprise, Nutella, Xbox brands and many more.

Every new opportunity or organization that I bring our business to, I must be feel like we’re both contributing and learning at the same time – bringing industry expertise to the table, whilst also continuing the evolution of our experience and professional toolkit.

My name is Dan Wilkinson.

I am a global award-winning social media strategist, university lecturer, speaker, podcaster and content producer with experience across FMCG, Travel, Beer/Alcohol brands, B2B, Not-For-Profit, Augmented Reality, Tech/Apps, Fintech, Health & Wellness, Cosmetics, Health Insurance & more.

I am currently on the market looking at permanent roles in Los Angeles, Sydney (or remote), Austin, Portland (OR) or New York City as Social Media Director/Head of Social Media/Social Media Strategy roles.

I have forged multiple careers across my professional lifetime based on an overarching commitment to Life Work Balance (see my latest @hotndelicious podcast for more on this) and the Pursuit of Happiness.

Professionally I define the pursuit of happiness as:

  1. A business opportunity or career role that I am inspired by and passionate.
  2. That that has the potential for positive impact on the lives of others (through clients or the people that I’m working with).
  3. Whilst being paid appropriately for my services and level professional experience (unless I decide that it’s for professional development for myself/business/career or a philanthropic pursuit).

I’ve stayed true to this philosophy from my early 20s from my 6.5 years based in Dubai traveling the globe as an international Emirates Airline flight attendant to juggling numerous roles in the music industry (event operations & logistics/ TV show music supervisor/photography/social media/band management) to putting a 900 square metre ice-rink on the sands of Bondi Beach back in 2011, (the 1st of its kind anywhere in the world!) to today.

Every new role I step into, I must be feel like I’m contributing and learning at the same time – bringing my industry expertise to the table, whilst also continuing the evolution of my experience and professional toolkit.

I definitely prefer working agency-side or 1-on-1 with major clients and the 3 things I look for in new biz opportunities/roles/clients are:

  1. Digitally progressive –you are a digitally progressive business/brand or you want to be (if you’re not there yet then you want to pay someone who is and can bring you up to speed).
  2. Corporate Culture/Champion of the People – you foster a culture of inclusiveness from the top down and that is evident in the energy/experience of the people who work with you at all levels.

At this point, I’m rather convinced that my next big opportunity awaits in the USA, so I’m keen to work in:

  1. Los Angeles – Santa Monica, Venice Beach or WeHo.
  2. Austin (TX).
  3. Portland (OR).
  4. New York City – Manhattan or Brooklyn.
  5. Sydney – I love living in Bondi Beach, so if you think you’ve got the right opportunity, then get in touch!
  6. Remote – I can work from anywhere with a laptop and smartphone/wifi connection.

Social Media Recruitment – Trial by Snapchat – How are you challenging the status quo?

I have built a digital career for myself that didn’t even exist 15 years ago, in a social media industry that is constantly evolving at the speed of sound and requires a finger on the pulse at all times or you get left behind… and I love it!

Unfortunately one of the downsides, eternal frustrations and key elements that comes with the territory of such a career, is the need to be constantly holding the hands of clients and customers (both internal and external), who believe that they understand how to utilize social media for their brand just because they have a personal Facebook account or know how to post a few blurry smartphone images or so-called “inspirational” quotes to Instagram.

So what can we do as recruiters to find people who are the best recruits for social media roles and help ease this pain?

My advice to social media recruiters and even myself a week ago, would be to challenge the status quo of how you are recruiting social media team members for your agencies and small businesses. If you are still receiving the same tired old resumes for social media account management, creative or community management roles, then chances are that you yourself are doing it wrong. A month ago, I threw out a pile of resumes collecting dust from social media industry “professionals”, who’ve followed the same old skool Word doc resume format with zero visuals and little illustration of the personality that I believe is a non-negotiable to be a success in the social media industry. They didn’t stand out in my Newsfeed.

So how can I challenge the status quo?

Check out this ThinkTank Social job advertisement that popped up in my Facebook Newsfeed just a few days ago. I don’t know much about the role myself, but it caught my attention and to me it could indicate that they chose Trial by Snapchat as a way of finding the type of person and personality that they’re after for the position and agency culture. It could quite well be quite a niche role and I know plenty of great account managers who aren’t suited for social media at all.

Looking at it from a birds-eye view I like their choice of application because they’re obviously not only illustrating the personality behind their agency, but challenging the status quo of job advertisements. It stood out in my newsfeed and made me think about/reassess how I have advertised roles in the past and how I will do so in the future.

I’m not saying that Trial by Snapchat is the right solution for your next job advertisement, but I like that Thinktank Social having a go!

Side note: 

I’m also consistently surprised at how few candidates include links to their own social pages or @-handles on resumes or digital portfolios (or even a website central to a personal digital ecosystem where recruiters can be directed to their various social media channels). Whether you like it or not, the best recruiters, social media managers and directors will search for and find a recruit’s personal social media channels in an effort to determine the type of person they’re dealing with (you can tell a lot about the psychology of an person by the style of copy they write and how they interact with others online), whether said recruit actually understands how to optimize content each individual social media platform and to get a small taste of the type of creative that they can expect from that person. So always be mindful of how you’re representing yourself on open channels, consider the perception of the type of content you’re posting and get those URLs in on your resumes, peeps.
