119 Krafty Kuts + Chali 2NA from Jurassic 5 live in Bondi

DOWNLOAD the PODCAST – #119 Krafty Kuts + Chali 2NA from Jurassic 5 live in Bondi.

3pm on Friday, my friend AJ from Central Station Records drops me a line…

“We have Krafty Kuts & Chali 2na (Jurassic 5) launching their brand new single ‘It Ain’t My Fault’ at the Beach Road Hotel in Bondi this Wednesday 1st of March…” can we hook up an interview on Bondi Beach Radio?

Yes, yes and yes…

So AJ sends me through a couple of pressers (press releases) and a copy of the brand new single “It Ain’t My Fault” and then come Monday morning, I find myself in the boardroom at Central Station Records in Sydney for a 2:1 chat with Kraft Kuts and Chali 2na. Awesome!

Our vast ranging chats cover Krafty Kuts’ earliest ever memory from his childhood of the family cat in Kingston upon Thames in the UK and Chali’s memories of his 2nd birthday in the projects of south-side Chicago, the pleasures of working with Dynamite MC and Chali 2na to bring this jam to life, our shared experiences of the inspiration of hip hop street art in Miami, Rome, Montpellier, Belgium and their 2 pieces of advice that Krafty Kuts and Chali 2na give to someone who has a dream, but is afraid to take that first step.

As Krafty tells it, studying your art and creating magic is all about practicing your art form to hone yourself into the best at what you do and I felt that myself even during this interview, as while I usually capture what I need in hour long shows that I’ve been recording for 2.5 years, we made this shit work in 25 minutes.

I’ll be heading down to their show Beach Road Bondi as part of the global ‘Hands High’ Tour tonight (Wednesday night 1st of March) for sure!

Stoked to be able to launch “It Ain’t My Fault” by Krafty Kuts & Dynamite MC featuring Chali 2na of Jurassic 5 on my show on Bondi Beach Radio and you can download the interview right here, right now on iTunes.

These two gentleman are consummate professionals, super enigmatic and downright lovely… And maaaaaaannnn… this jam is GOLD!

Shock Records A&R and Label Director and founder of artist management business Be Like Children, Luke Girgis, is a buddy of mine whom I met through the Australian music industry a few years back and he’s one kickass dude, who walks the talk and is getting shit done.

Having originally started out as a hip hop artist collaborating with Australian rapper Chance Waters, Luke Girgis fell into Artist Management in 2006 out of his passion for helping his friends and favourite artists establish and build their careers.

Flash forward 10 years and Luke and I are podcasting in a Texas hotel room at SXSW chatting about being the head of a record label, Chance Waters, locking in a management deal with pop rockers Little Sea  on a Monday then landing a global publishing deal with Universal Music just 2 days later on a Wednesday before flying the band out to LA, trending on social media & travelling the globe, and Luke’s latest exciting management recruit, YouTube sensation Simone Giertz of ‘Shitty Robots’.

Living in the moment with one of my buddies across the seas in the USA, hanging out over a bunch of laughs and soaking up our collective successes in an awesome, inspiring chat… This one just makes my day…

Breaking down cultural barriers – ‘Through These Eyes’ – with hip hop artist, Zii.

Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast series

“Wealth is an investment in other people, rather than the the riches that you have back home

From Harare, Zimbabwe to Melbourne suburbia, trail blazer and hip hop artist Zii is a man who just lights up the room with his outlook, energy and positivity.

The son of a Nobel Peace Prize winner, Zii arrived in Australia from Africa 10 years ago to pursue a career in IT and whilst mentoring a young fellow church-goer, fell in love with music himself and began pursuing the dream.

I am privileged to meet fascinating people on a weekly basis through the Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast and this one left me feeling truly inspired and with a renewed determination to strive to be a better man… we spend today’s podcast chatting openly about culture, race, religion and music… the distinct cultural and behavioural differences of how Australians interact with each other as opposed to people from the country of his birth, ‘Through These Eyes’ – an inspiring EP and project that Zii’s created to educate, challenge and change Australian perceptions and understanding of the African continent, being empowered and fuelled by his parent’s integrity and belief and inspired to greatness by Grammy Award winning American rapper, Lecrae.

Whilst we are from vastly different cultures and backgrounds, Zii’s story resonated with me and his perspective on life mirrors my own. This was the first time we’d met but I am now left buzzing with energy and excitement….

The key to breaking down barriers and understanding our fellow man no matter what their religion, race or creed is all about the desire to make world a better place by inviting people to be a part of your community, asking the right questions and seeking to make a connection.

Enjoy!

Kickin’ it with LFRESH THE LION… Australia’s latest hip hop sensation

Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast series

Interview #9 – L-Fresh The Lion (Hiop Hop artist)

L Fresh The Lion has some sweet, sweet jams that have sparked the imagination of a nation getting some serious airplay of late and this is a guy who’s toured nationally with a whole swag of hip hop legends including the likes Chali 2na of Jurassic 5, Nas, Dead Prez and many more. Catching up and hanging out with him at my West Melbourne sound cave in the sky was an experience. Just beautiful.

A few of the things that I’ve spent some time thinking about in the lead-up to this interview and since, is that I’ve been fortunate enough in my life to have traveled to 6 out of 7 of our planet’s continents, I’ve lived in 4 different countries thus far, studied 5 different languages, worked with and managed people from over a 100 different nationalities and a range of  cultures, but I, like all of us, still feel like I have so much to learn about my fellow man which is one of the big reasons why I created this podcast.

This interview with L Fresh The Lion was amazing and reaffirming… he’s beautifully humble, chilled, strong within himself…. and afterwards I just felt relaxed and that the world made more sense. Here’s a guy that many in our global community would say from external appearances is quite different to me. He’s a Sikh, I don’t believe in god, I love the beers something chronic, he doesn’t drink, we both meditate, we both love, we both hurt, we’re both working hard to live a life doing what we love, ambitious and yet still living in the moment. Which to me actually makes us more the same 🙂

What I see almost every day and what many of us fail to stop, recognize and appreciate is that essentially as a species we’re all the same in so many ways. Our fear of those different to us and of the unknown is where prejudice is born, but once we take the time to look beyond colour, race, creed and actually get to know our fellow man the world is a different place, so I decided to share with you an excerpt from L Fresh The Lion’s YouTube blurb for the song he dropped earlier this year ‘Survive’.

This short passage taught me something new this week about L Fresh, his cultural background and a proportion of the Indian people living in our Australian community called Sikhs, a people and belief system that I can honestly say in my 38 years thus far I haven’t taken the time to learn more about until now.

“The Sikhs constitute about 14% of all people of Indian origin who have migrated to Australia (this figure is remarkable when it is considered that Sikhs only constitute about 2.5% of the total population in India)

Sikhs originated in the land of Punjab (which means the Land of Five Rivers). This land (Punjab) has been devided numerous times and currently is in the form of a number of states – Punjab (India), Punjab (Pakistan), Haryana (India), Himachal Pardesh (India) and Chandigarh (India).

These divisions of Punjab, caused due to socio-poliltical uncetainities and injustices to the Sikhs, forced them to move out of their home land, first to other parts of India and then to the neighbouring countries as well as across the continents.”

L Fresh and I both recognize and embrace our differences. And that for me that’s what it’s all about, ‘cause despite a few differences, before meeting him in person, during and afterwards I feel & felt connected to this dude – a kindred spirit if you will.

In the course of this ‘Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet’ podcast interview, we chat we about life-changing trips to the northern India, the land of his forefathers, where the name L Fresh The Lion was born, his inspiration, influencers, the most unexpected experiences in hidden temples in Punjab and much, much more.

Hope you enjoy our little chat as much as I did 🙂

Aussie rapper Seth Sentry breaking the US market live on Jimmy Kimmel!

Seth Sentry live at The Aussie BBQ

Melbourne’s Seth Sentry is breaking down barriers & making a charge at the USA with a historic first appearance by an Aussie rapper on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

We caught Seth for the first time a few weeks back at The Aussie BBQ at SXSW in Austin, Texas and loved it! His wicked Maggie Mae’s performance was followed by a guest appearance during Aussie rapper 360‘s set and a kick-ass live battle ensued, driving the crowd absolutely nuts!

Whilst it’s exciting to see Australian hip hop on the international stage and there’s much conjecture about whether our product is too niche or soft to be successful in the competitive US market, it’s hard not to be happy to see a humble, laid-back guy with sweet jams starting to make his mark in North America.
