Imagine being 25 years of age, looking at yourself in the mirror, not looking any different, not feeling any different, but you’ve just found out that you have brain tumours and you’re not sure if you’re going to be alive in 6 months.

Podcast Feature: My journey of a life and lessons having lived through 3 brain tumour operations, going completely deaf on one side, facial paralysis and learning how to walk again.

As you may have gathered, this week’s show is not your standard Hot & Delicious podcast episode and yes happily, 3 brain tumour operations and 18 years later I am still alive and well. This is not a “poor me” podcast and anyone who knows me knows how positive I am. This is for many of my friends who have been asking me about the story after my latest check-up and I’ve created it also in the hope that I can provide individuals going through their own ordeal, and their families, with a little shared experience that they might be able to use to help them their own journeys.

Some of you long-time listeners will know that I recorded some similar subject matter in 2016, however I’m a different person these days, I realised that I don’t think that I ever published a blog article about it and these kind of stories, in my eyes at least, are timeless and best shared, lest my own journey can be of benefit to someone else. It would quite honestly make my day and year if it could.

And as a little bonus at the end of this week’s episode, I’ll also share a few thoughts on pursuing your dreams from my perspective, shifting from full-time corporate work to self-employed retainer clients, as well as the need for techniques if you are self-employed and work from home.

‘Becoming Colleen: Finding the Shoe that Fits’ is a documentary about an 85 year old transgender woman, transitioning from male to female in the coastal community of Coffs Harbour on the NSW mid-north coast. Having lived most of her life as Colin – a husband, father, policeman, film-projectionist and self-declared shoe fetishist, Colleen has had to negotiate her gender transition later in life.

More than a documentary about the transitioning of an elderly transgender woman: this is a story of Col and her wife Heather: two people whose love transcended their gender roles; a small community that comes together to support a woman in pursuit of her greatest dream; and how finding exactly the right pair of shoes can be a perfect fit.

On today’s show, my close friend Craig Mack and I interview writer, producer & director, Ian Thomson, who with the support of Queer Screen, Acon, STC and Documentary Australia Foundation, has pulled together this most beautiful and evocative journey that touches on so many important social issues of our time.

Not only does it shine a light on the world and life of a transgender lady growing up in rural Australia and the challenges that she faces along the way, this is story of inclusiveness, being true to yourself, spending time with and cherishing the elderly, evolving interpersonal relationships with friends, family and strangers, demonstrating the need for understanding, striving to learn from and showing empathy for people in the world around us, especially if they view the world a little bit differently to or approach life from a slightly different perspective to us.

It makes me proud to share this work of art and I hope you that enjoy this story as much as I do!

Well now, what an amazing year 2017 has been!

After taking the leap of faith and leaving my role as Social Media Lead at SapientNitro Australia to step back into my own Social Media Strategy & Content Production business, I have relocated to Sydney from Melbourne (via Los Angeles) to take on Cancer Council Australia as a client, significantly diversified our depth of experience across a range of different industries, lectured social media strategy in university at Macleay College in Sydney for the first time, had my own radio show on Bondi Beach Radio and run a series of live podcasts including the International Business Review Conference in Melbourne just 2 weeks ago!

Over the past year or so, Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! have worked Cancer Council Australia, Planet Life Balance Virtual Reality Greening app, Moula fintech, Mahlab Agency (global B2B business, hbf insurance), REBORN Agency,  and Cherry Blooms global cosmetics brand providing a range of services including a full audit of organisational digital ecosystems and assets, the generation Best Practice Social Media Playbooks and Monthly Reporting templates, creation of systems and processes to improve internal/external ways or working and 2-3 year strategic roadmaps.

3 key points have only further solidified in my mind over this time. We as Social Media Strategists, Creatives and Account Management teams need to push our teams and our clients to be more sophisticated in the creation of through-the-line strategies and content that generate Social Social Media designed for the User Experience, Funnel Strategies that drive ROI and evolve our approach for the The Next Wave of Brand Influencer Campaigns.

Inspirational quotes do zero for your brand objectives unless you’re a meditation/yoga business or run a speaker agency, cat videos and dog memes aren’t suitable unless you’re Whiskas or Chum and generic lifestyle/beauty products laid out on a towel on the beach is just not doing much of value to sales or a connection with your brand.

If you haven’t implemented the following in your agency or brand yet, then this is where you need to start in 2018:

  1. Social Social Media + UX – Generate Content That You’d Want To See In Your Own Mobile Newsfeed. Don’t use social media to yell at people! Billboards ≠ Effective Content.
  2. Create a Funnel Strategy. Create strategic content and advertising campaigns to drive results and client ROI.
    1. Design or re-design your digital ecosystem with specific roles.
        1. Assess your current digital ecosystem.
        2. Determine where your target audience are playing.
        3. Assess what ad solutions best suit your objectives and target audience penetration.
    2. Ladder your Content Pillars -> Social Media Objectives -> Business Pillars.
    3. Utilize your content and ad spend as part of a Funnel Strategy.
  1. The Next Wave of Brand Influencer Campaigns – Pivot from the wanna-be Instagram model to working with and upskilling influencers to create campaigns with a measurable uplift in Sales and Return On Investment.

After a 3 month stint in California and making the transition from my full-time role as Social Media Lead for SapientNitro in Australia driving social media for Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate, Peroni Italian Beer, Bulmers Original Cider, Oreo, Philly Cream Cheese, Kraft Peanut Butter & more, I decided that I needed a change of scenery, moved up to the beaches of Sydney, knuckling down to the task of operating my own biz again and focusing on project-work with clients across a broad spectrum, including Cosmetics, B2B, Health Insurance, Tech, Health & Wellness, FMCG, Not-For-Profit, Alcohol brands (including craft beer), Travel, Lifestyle and much more.

It’s been a wonderful journey since leaving SapientNitro and we are now in the position where we are expanding Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! to take on new ongoing clients and additional social media strategy projects, as well as ongoing/freelance content production, social media reporting and community management contracts (including Out Of Hours community management – weekends/public holidays and Crisis Management) as part of my ongoing relationships with brands, agency partners and industry friends.

Not only have we managed to grow the business, but in 2017 I became a university lecturer in social media strategy at Macleay College in Sydney for the 1st time, we’ve continued to build the Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! brand through our 2 Instagram accounts, @hotndelicious and @craftbeerlovin’, which have each grown by over 14K+ global followers in the past year, I’ve stepped into brand campaings as a social media influencer myself, speaking engagements at events, had a weekly radio show on Bondi Beach Radio and my weekly iTunes entrepreneurship podcast Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! continues to go from strength-to-strength, averaging over 2K downloads a month in 2017!

Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! repeat offender and Sydney indie soul, R&B & hip hop artist & producerBilly Fox, joined me live in the studio last week to launch his brand new single ‘Shapes’.

We first met when I was music supervisor for Ballistyx Snowboard Show on Channel GO! back in 2010. Flash forward 7 years and Billy Fox- ‘Shapes’ is getting serious spins around the globe, plus he has just announced a series of exclusive Australian east coast tour dates including Oxford Art Factory – Gallery Bar (Sydney), Rare Finds -­ Black Bear Lodge (Brisbane), Moonshine Bar at Manly Food & Wine Festival and Penny Black (Melbourne).

I draw inspiration from my one-on-ones with Billy Fox every… single… time! (both on and off mic). Today we delve deeper into the meaning behind ‘Shapes’, a track created to reawaken the lost art of conversation, it highlights a culture that we’ve created for ourselves, where we force our individual opinions down each others’ throats and attack the person rather than entering into measured debates… there is a serious need for all of us to adopt an approach where we take a moment for introspection and to search within, before knee-jerk reaction opinions and seeking to change others’ to ours without consideration for where they’re coming from.

Aside from the D&Ms, we get serious about our music experiences with Billy Fox and I spitballing the iconic music of Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, being given Rage Against The Machine’s self-titled album for the very first time, the experience of producing tunes for Australian filmmaker and musician Macario De Souza AKA Kid Mac, making a positive impact on the lives of others and SO much more!

We all grow from adversity and something that I champion in my own life is the way Billy Fox lives his. In music, like life, “there is so much to get distracted by… especially when you’re creating, especially with music”, so music like every other facet of our lives at this time “it’s all about streamlining, simplifying”… and Billy Fox indeed is living up to this through his personal Mission Statement and stepping back from the stresses of over-stimulation and white noise, by keeping things simple… “If it feels good, then do it”.
