Interview #35 Nate Debritt (Entrepreneur & Biz Founder/Co-Owner – La Mascara alcohol brand, Kodiak Club and Little Blood bar co-owner).

“Don’t sweat the money!”

From casinos to cruise ships, today’s podcast guest is La Mascara alcohol brand co-founder, Kodiak Club American bourbon bar and Little Blood tequila bar co-owner and entrepreneur, Nathan Debritt.

La Mascara is a wicked alcohol brand with a range of ready-to-serve cocktails, spirits (tequila, vodka) and alcoholic ice teas that hospitality industry stalwart, party guy and entrepreneur Nate Debritt, Ben Gillies (Silverchair), Ben’s wife Jackie Gillies (Real Housewives of Melbourne) and Anton Drazevic (Folklore) launched on the reality TV show in 2014 as a point of difference in the global liquor market.

Nate and I met in Richmond, Melbourne in 2006 just after I left Emirates Airline, at a bar he co-owned called the Town Hall Hotel. I was catching up with the Emirates crew who’d just landed into Melbourne for a few cheeky bevies and he was chasing a young Irish lass who was also on the crew. Anyway, after a few drinks at the Towny and a whole lot more at several shady establishments in Windsor, we ventured back to the Town Hall Hotel for a late night lock-in with a bunch of well-lubricated flight attendants. My lasting memory of that evening is a moment of clarity at stupid o’clock in the morning when I realized I was behind the bar of a bloke I just met pouring fresh pints for all and sundry… Oh, and this friendship 😉

Flash forward 9 years later and Nate is now one of those people I know I can rely upon when I’m craving inspiration, hits of elation in conversation and flat-out honesty, without desolation.

I’ve said many times on this podcast, that a big factor in success and drive as an inspired, small business owner treading your own path towards living the dream, is surrounding yourself with like-minded people who, while maybe not chasing the same dream as you, share a hunger for a life less ordinary. For me, my friend Nathan Debritt is one of those.

If there is only one, that is the one thing that I hope you take from this podcast.

Enjoy!

Interview #34 – Louna Maroun (YouTube vlogger, comedian and musician).

I’m a super creative guy and I love that I’ve built a career working with international brands in social media – an industry that didn’t even exist 15 years ago.

Like me, today’s guest, YouTuber Louna Maroun started her social media journey on Myspace. Both of us work in the digital media, but while I get paid to build other people’s brands in the digital space whilst building my own too, Louna Maroun is a brand unto herself.

Yep, that’s right.. 3 YouTube Channels with 180K subscribers (Comedy, Beauty and Vlog Youtube channels)… seriously… living the dream! Ah-mazing!

Louna and I met briefly in passing when we were both speaking at Social Media Club Melbourne recently, but connected on Twitter and then I dropped her an email about coming along as my guest on the Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast, as while we create vastly different and diverse styles of content, I’m a sucker for like-minded souls, recognised one immediately and just had to have her on for a chat.

And chat we did… In today’s podcast we discuss the top tips that aspiring artists, businessmen and women should employ when making a start building their own brand/digital empire, tattoo artists and entrepreneur Kat Von D and why she’s a source of inspiration, Louna’s first every memory as a child (involves her dad, vomit and a chocolate bar – seriously 😀), white water rafting in Slovenia, rainbows and delving into special effects, all the wicked gear she uses to shoot/create her YouTube video content (Canon 60Ds, Black Magic, Adobe Premiere, Rode Shotgun mic, Zoom H4n (yes, Zoom gear is awesome!), creating content for open-minded, international brands, the wonders of treading your own path (in physical, a day-to-day sense and in life) and not being afraid to try things that you think you might like to do for a job… ‘cause you never know.. you might actually end up making it your life!

Super, inspiring podcast and Louna Maroun’s just a bundle of positive energy – my kind of people. Can’t wait to collab on more content together!

Enjoy this chat & don’t forget to hit us both up on Twitter when you’re done!

Interview #33 – Daniel Burt (Aussie comedian, actor & writer).

Imagine being a writer on one of the world’s biggest TV shows!

Australian TV show writer, stand-up comedian, journalist and actor, Daniel Burt is prolific and determined. Determined to love what he does for a living. Back in 2005, Daniel put his money where his mouth is very early in his career when he took every cent he had and a chunk of change from his parents retirement fund to chase a job opening in the USA working as in intern in the writing department of the Late Show with David Letterman.

Success! Despite mistakenly opening up an alarmed fire door and evacuating the building on his first day in the job and walking into a door one of the first times he met David Letterman, Daniel Burt worked as an unpaid intern on Late Show with David Letterman for 6 months, gaining invaluable experience on a 5 nights a week comedy show with an audience of millions.

Since his return to Australia in 2006, Daniel has worked as a comedic writer on skitHOUSE, Good News Week, The Glass House and a range of other television shows including being one of the founding writers of Channel 10’s The Project TV.

Today Daniel Burt writes for Fairfax Newspapers in Sydney and Melbourne (Sydney Morning Herald, The Age), The Guardian (UK), has recently been asked to work as a full-time writer on comedian Charlie Pickering’s news comedy show, Weekly on ABCTV and has toured the world with his stand-up comedy to New York, Paris, the United Kingdom and of course Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

We cover a range of topics during our chat including his time with idol David Letterman, the impact that Letterman and Woody Allen have made on his career outlook, his earliest childhood memories, deep and meaningful conversations about ANZAC Day and what it means to Australians, the complexities of war and our respective journeys to Gallipoli, Villers-Bretonneux and Normandy.

There’s so much gold in here… Game time!

If it’s not fun then you’re missing the point – Aussie comedian Tom Ballard.

Wicked pre-Edinburgh Fringe catch-ups with Tom Ballard

Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast series

Interview #32 – Tom Ballard (Aussie comedian, podcaster & writer).

“It’s just supposed to be fun. If it’s not fun then you’re missing the point…”
– Australian comedian Tom Ballard

I’m sitting here on my bean-bag in my castle in the sky after interviewing Australian comedian, writer, TV show creator and podcaster, Tom Ballard and I’ve got a little bit of a buzz on. No, I’m not drunk or high, I actually didn’t pull out a beer until 3/4 of the way through this podcast and it was good to interview without beers for a change… I’m just sitting here soaking up the afterglow that I get every time that I record this podcast. I love the intimacy and learnings of a one-on-one with interesting, inspiring people who are working their absolute backsides off to do what they love! Happiness!

Anyway in today’s podcast chat, Tom and I cover a range of topics including his upcoming international comedy tour to Montreal, Edinburgh Fringe Festival and London where Tom’s performing his one-man show, Taxis & Rainbows & Hatred, which is a “a blistering hour of stand-up about love, sex loneliness and finding the courage to be one’s self,”the recent Dawn Fraser vs Nick Kyrgios saga and the casual racism that’s still so prevalent in Australian society, the decision to leave a highly successful role at triple j radio career to continue pursuing a full-time career in stand-up comedy, reminiscing back to 2011 when we met and involved in the launch event of triple j unearthed radio station, inspirational figures in his life and so much more.

Super super chats and since the recording I’ve been loving catching up on episodes of Tom’s own podcast ‘Like I’m A Six-Year-Old’ where Tom sits down with fascinating individuals like Arj Barker, Dan Ilic and Waleed Aly to talk about politics, the way society works and just learn about people. ‘Cause that’s how we work out who we are right?

At a time in my life where I’m loving my career and the projects I work on outside of my 9-5, in the back of my mind is the ever present yardstick that I hold myself to “Am I at where I want to be? What would I do with my life right now if I could do anything?”… Tom’s outlook on life and thoughts from the podcast couldn’t have rung more true to me. Amongst others they are this..

“When you’re starting out you’re kind of obsessed by breaking, your big break and the thing that’s going to make a name for yourself. Life is long and career’s are long.. you are not any one gig, you are not any one TV show. You are not any one job or any one project in one job… the long term view is a very healthy thing to have, then the deciding factor is your commitment to the thing you want to do and how hard want to work at it to make it happen.”

“Opportunity cost is a fact of life. (as a result of leaving triple j) I went on to tour a lot more and do a TV show and now I’m about to go overseas which I couldn’t be doing if I was on radio.”

Words from the guru. Chasing the dream, living the dream. Let’s get into it!

Interview #31 – Adam Richard (Aussie comedian, podcaster & writer).

Grinder, Growler, Scruff, Squirt… dating apps of the international gay community and the array of symbols that people use in their personal profiles… this is a world where a $ sign in your profile means that there’s a cash transaction for the pleasure of your company and + sign means you’re HIV+.

Today’s guest, Australian comedian Adam Richard, got into stand-up comedy in 1997 with a purpose – to make an impact. Change the way that comics talked about gay people on stage – with so many comedians at open mic nights and club sets hitting the homophobic jokes as the “go-to” option for cheap laughs. Just not good enough.

As a man who considered himself a “serious arteest” and was studying Professional Writing and Editing  at RMIT University, a career in stand-up comedy wasn’t a path that Adam Richard found overly appealing, but after seeing a bunch of wonderful comics including Matt King live, Adam realised that there could be a lot more depth to stand-up comedy than just one-liners and dick jokes… a narrative if you will, was what he craved.

Aside from chatting about the different dating apps for available for Twinks, Bears and more, we talk about my time working as promotional staff for Vitamin Water – where my role as team leader was to drive around town in a branded Vitamin Water vehicle in search of spots where we could hand out drink samples, whilst the two colleagues beside me, both gay, spent their time on the road swiping their way through Grinder looking for cute men at the various locations we stopped at around Melbourne.

We also touch on the discrimination that HIV+ people experience on a daily basis, the societal challenge of being LGBT and not coming out just the once, but almost every time you meet someone new, how not to use dating apps if you’re a straight male 😉 Adam’s first ever childhood memory, his podcasts The Shelf and Talking Poofy presents The Poofcast, Tonka Trucks, The Shelf live shows, Stan Lee wanting to be a comic book writer and so much more.

Over the past 18 years since starting stand-up, Adam Richard has built a career of many permutations from national radio on triple j and Fox FM, TV star on Spicks & Specks, co-writer and co-star of ABC TV comedy series Outland, producer and podcaster extraordinaire, the list goes on…

Interview #30 – Alister Robbie (The Post Project director, producer & craft brewer).

“When you’re hanging from 3 fingers and desperately trying to get your hand up onto the ledge to give you some breathing room because your left arm’s about to pop out, the fact of whether you can pay your rent or your phone bill is overdue tends not to matter so much.”
– Alister Robbie (The Post Project).

Self-confessed adrenaline junkie, Alister Robbie is a director, producer, craft beer brewer and owner of global business – The Post Project Production Company.

Al and I met met back in 2010 when Al was a producer on Ballistyx Snowboard Show on Channel GO! in Australia and I was working as the TV show’s music supervisor, sourcing the music of independent Australian artists and bands across a range of genres from around Australia.

A hard-core adventurist, Alister Robbie’s been an adrenaline junkie from a very young age, with his first bungee jump at age 11, rock-climbing, sky-diving, riding ramp on skate-boards, roller blades, BMX and eventually making his way into the mountain-biking scene.

It was during that time about 20 years that while pushing the limits, Al had a serious mountain-biking accident, crashing while traversing a his way down a mountain, his bike and body strewn over 60 metres and was clinically dead for around 5-6 minutes.

These days he gets his high through snowboarding and chasing the powder on the big mountains around the world and that life-changing experience on the mountain has impacted his outlook on life, cherishing every moment and his desire complete with an unwavering no fear attitude has led to Al’s business, The Post Project, to come on leaps and bounds since it’s inception in 2010.

The first ever foreigner in the world allowed to shoot in Reebok’s factory in China, Al’s past & present clients include Reebok, Little Creatures Brewing Company, German automobile manufacturer Audi, Shell, Sneaker Freaker, craft breweries around Australia and many many more.

We chat about:

  • The entrepreneurial mindset & achieving goals beyond your wildest dreams.
  • Zen & rock-climbing -“Suddenly the worries of the world fall away and don’t matter so much”
  • Surrounding yourself with like-minded people – replacing the “Why” people with the “Why Not” people.
  • Cherry picking skills/qualities of a range of people who inspire you and making them you’re own, rather than emulating “idols”.
  • Richard Branson – cocking up with the IRS and how some of the most successful people not only celebrate their successes, but are highly transparent about their failures.

This is the story of my close friend and a man achieving global success with a mantra that I also call my own…

Bite off more than you can chew then chew like hell.

Interview #29 – Nick Bracks (underBRACKS biz founder, Headspace brand ambassador, TV celebrity and entrepreneur).

Born in country-Victoria, Australian businessman, TV celebrity, model, aspiring actor, Headspace brand ambassador and underBRACKS founder, Nick Bracks is quite clearly never bored.

Discovered by American Crew in 2009, Nick Bracks has a modelling portfolio that includes Australian retail giants Myer, David Jones and GQ magazine. He’s a former restaurant/cafe owner, has been on Dancing with the Stars in front of millions of people, launched underwear label underBRACKS in 2013 and more recently co-founded superfood supplement, Activated Nutrients.

Drawing from personal experience in his youth with depression and anxiety, Nick has worked with wonderful organisations such as Headspace, Beyond Blue, En Masse and Movember. During today’s chat we share our personal experiences struggling with depression at a young age, finding our focus in our early twenties to pull through and the hunger of wanting to love yourself and achieve in life.

Now regular subscribers to the podcast will know that I’ve had many different career permutations in my short lifetime – Crown Casino bar guy, Emirates Airline international flight attendant, running music festivals & events around Australia, TV show music supervisor, photographer, biochemistry back in the day and now along with this podcast, I’m guiding social media for a range of international brands including Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate, Peroni Nastro Azzurro Italian beer, Bulmers Original cider, Philly Cream Cheese, Kraft Nuts Spreads and many more. One of the key lessons that Nick and I discuss and have both learned is to not be afraid to have a go…

“There’s nothing to fear, but fear itself” is never more true than in Nick’s case – we chat about the motivations of delving into different career opportunities, testing the waters of career paths that you think you might like and how it gets you closer to knowing who you are/what you want to do in life… oh and Nick Bracks shares with us the key to marketing yourself as your own brand. Very, very cool.

Oh yes, I’ve got three words for you. “Inspiring” and “Fingers pies.”

Get amongst it!
