Ever since my early 20s, I’ve based my life choices and career around pursuing what I love in life and Sounds Australia Export Music Producer, Glenn Dickie is a guy who epitomises this.

Glenn Dickie AKA Glenny G spent 12 years as a radio presenter at 3RRR in Melbourne and then another 12 at EMI Music Australia in A&R/Promotions/Marketing working with artists such as Lily Allen, Katy Perry, Sigur Ros, You Am I, signing acts such Miami Horror, Ricki-Lee, Oh Mercy and was part of a team that signed The Cat Empire, Airbourne, Alison Wonderland and hip hop acts 360 and PEZ.

He now travels the world with Sounds Australia as Export Music Producer taking the very best of Australian music to all the world’s largest music conferences including SXSW, Canadian Music Week, The Great Escape (UK), Americana, Music Matters (Singapore), Reeperbahn (Germany), CMJ Music Marathon and many, many more.

Amongst hundreds of others, Courtney Barnett, Chet Faker, Flume and Vance Joy all played Sounds Australia showcases in their first year of export and benefitted from repeat Sounds Australia performance opportunities in the year following.

Anyway, my friendship with GG started back in 2011, when the sister of a friend of mine from my Emirates Airline days checked into the Bowery Ballroom in New York at an event called The Aussie BBQ, with a line-up featuring DZ Deathrays, Paul Dempsey, Bliss N Eso, Blue King Brown and a whole swag of the most amazing Australian musicians.

I was like… “Wow… what a line-up… Whats this all about??”

I immediately Googled The Aussie BBQ, got in touch with The Aussie BBQ organisers (Glenny G and Aussie journalist/music industry stalwart Mary Mihelakos) and next minute you know I am jetting over to Austin (Texas) in 2013 to shoot photography/produce social media at The Aussie BBQ and whole swag of other Sounds Australia events. I then returned to the USA for 3 months earlier this year, where I recorded a number of podcasts, shot photos of Michelle Obama’s keynote speech with Queen Latifah and Missy Elliot on #LetGirlsLearn, Vance Joy’s US tour at Verizon Theatre in Grand Prairie, Wolfmother’s SXSW packed house at Easy Tiger and much, much more (that’s actually the short version… seriously).

I’ve met so many wonderful people through GG and his amazing partner, Van Picken (Comes With Fries), so I was stoked to catch-up with him last week at APRA/AMCOS HQ in Ultimo, Sydney. They have both made an impact on my career & in my life. And I’m just one person in the Australian music industry… Imagine that at scale!

Super chats, brother & thanks for making the time. I hope that all you guys listening enjoy this podcast is much as I did. Awesome hangs!

How do you define success? You yourself reading this right now… What does success look like to you? It’s a question that we so rarely ask ourselves and often I think that we all lose sight of the bigger picture. These days the answer for me is simple, living for the now, driving for the future, constantly reassessing and adjusting my goals, both career & personal.

This is just one of the many topics we touch on in today’s wonderful podcast with Australian dancer, singer & actress, Stefanie Turner, who’s currently appearing in Australian Tour of the musical ‘Singin’ In The Rain’.

We chat about being selected as dance fitness and pilates instructor for Nike, life on the road touring Australian with ‘Singin’ In The Rain’, Broadway, New York versus L.A., Go Karting and top tips to drive you forward when you’re struggling for motivation or don’t know where to start when pursuing your dreams.

And then to top it off we finished up with a hike along the Bondi to Bronte coastal walk. What a way to spend a Friday afternoon & super inspirational chats!

Demi Louise – a little ray of sunshine, building a brand & travelling the globe!

Oh man… that Demi Louise… she’s just a little ray of sunshine!

Demi and I met a few years back via Twitter and since we’re both jetting off to Austin (TX) in just 4 weeks for SXSW, we were like… let’s hang out and do a podcast together! 😃

Demi Louise is an Australian folk pop singer songwriter who has travelled the world with her music performing at the world’s largest music conference, SXSW (Austin, TX), International Folk Alliance (Kansas), CMJ Music Marathon in New York, Liverpool Sound City Music Festival (UK), MUCON & Zandari Festival in South Korea and Canadian Music Week (Toronto).

At age 22, the Melbourne based singer/songwriter made a bold decision to travel the globe, build a fanbase organically through solid live shows and tap into international audiences beyond the Australian market by interacting and connecting with fans of international artists of a similar style to her own from around the world on Twitter.

As a result of this simple, but astute foresight, Demi Louise now boasts a combined social media following of more than 60K+ and she has racked up almost a quarter of a million views on YouTube. These are exactly the kind of digital tactics that all Australian musicians should utilize if theyre hoping to move beyond a small and saturated music market of just 23 million people that reside within our shores.

Demi’s down with the selfies, a demon on Twitter & Snapchat, so don’t forget to show her the Twitter love while you’re listening to today’s podcast and say hey to us both. Her social links & mine are all in the podcast show notes.

I’ve got so much admiration & respect for individuals who put in the hard yards to create their own worlds and their hard-earned money where their mouth is – Demi has not only self-funded all recording of her music, but all of her travels around the world!

Yes, Demi Louise, you are damn inspiring, girl… go get ‘em, tiger!

Interview #5 – Matt Walters – Australian independent singer-songwriter.

Man, I fuckin’ love this chat. Today we’ve got a special treat.. we’re sitting down with Aussie independent musician Matt Walters who’s jams have been seen & heard on YouTube by millions around the world

Matt and I grew up on the same street in Melbourne, Australia and didn’t really know each other that well although our families knew each other. Then some 20+ years later I’m seated next to Matt a concert and we get chatting not knowing who the other was before it all dawned on us. And then I bump into him again two weeks later at iconic Melbourne music venue, Cherry Bar.. I don’t believe in fate, but I do believe in seizing opportunities and so I invited Matt along for this podcast.

Man, when the conversation flows, it flows.. so without further ado… sit back relax and enjoy our interview with independent Australian singer-songwriter Matt Walters.

The Aussie BBQ – New York City.. Aussie artists traveling the globe!

Posted on Updated on

The Aussie BBQ finished the first North American leg of 2013 with a bang in New York City.

Presented once again by Stage Mothers and their friends at Billabout, the line-up included the likes of Seth Sentry, Grey Ghost, Fascinator!, Dune Rats, Trouble with Templeton, Emma Louise, The Beards, Summer Flake, Ginger & the Ghost and The Falls.
Music as always was the centre-piece of the BBQ, but this time Stage Mothers took it to another level with guest chef Chris Rendell creating an amazing Australian-themed menu for the day. D-licious!
