Happiness!

Anyone who listens to Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! on Bondi Beach Radio and the iTunes podcast every week, will know that I am a massive fan and believer in chasing your dreams in the pursuit of happiness.

This week I am excited to have award-winning Australian comedian, podcaster & writer,¬†Tom Ballard on Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet!¬†to promote his 2017 stand-up show Tom Ballard – ‘Problematic‚Äô,¬†LIVE at Giant Dwarf¬†this Thursday 4th – Sunday 7th May as part of Sydney Comedy Festival.

Over the past 2 years since our last recording together, Tom’s stand-up comedy career has been on a sharp rise to the top, enjoying nominations for Best Show at both Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2016, his American television debut on Comedy Central’s Roast Battle at Montreal’s Just for Laughs Festival, his political podcast Like I’m A Six-Year-Old has just hit 100 episodes and continues to grow from strength to strength and at the end of 2016 he appeared in SBS’s ground-breaking series First Contact, a journey of discovery into Aboriginal Australia.

One of the joys that I have discovered that comes as a result of surrounding yourself with like-minded people also pursuing their own ambition and success, is that invariably you get to watch your friends rise to the challenge, share their journeys and celebrate your collective wins along the way.

Tom Ballard was certainly already well on his way to this success we first met 6 years ago, whilst launching triple j unearthed as a radio station back in 2011, but to then watch him have the courage to leave his role has co-host of the Tom & Alex morning show on triple j, take a leap of faith to achieve his dream of being a successful stand-up comedian and see where he’s at now just makes me so happy!

“Being your own master of your life and your passions, it‚Äôs a very powerful and important thing to do and if you have a chance to take it then grab it with both hands.‚ÄĚ – Tom Ballard.

Never a truer word spoken, my man. Let’s get into the show!

Touchdown LA!

It’s been a super intense 3.5 weeks since I landed in USA!

2 weeks in Texas exploring Dallas, a night in Houston for Rodeo Houston where I experienced a newborn calf take its first steps, small children riding shaggy sheep in front of a stadium packed with 70,000 people, ate gator for the first time and some of the fattiest food known to man and then 8 nights at the world’s largest music conference, SXSW, where I shot photos of Michelle Obama’s inspiring keynote speech with Queen Latifah, Missy Elliot and more, recorded 4.5 podcasts, shot 15-20 live music shows (incl. Wolfmother, P.O.D.) and partied the house down in Austin!

Since landing in LA last week, I‚Äôve taken time out chillin‚Äô in Burbank at the home of a friend on mine, Troy Conrad, the creator and co-producer of the improvised stand-up show, ‚ÄėSet List: Stand-Up Without A Net‚Äô, a TV series on Sky Atlantic in the UK, and on ABC2 in Australia.

For those not familiar with California, Burbank is a beautiful part of Los Angeles at the base of the mountains about 30 minutes from downtown Hollywood and the home to most of the major American movie-making studios. It’s been a lovely recharge with long daily hikes through Brand Park and Wildwood Canyon trails after the madness of packing up my life in Australia, writing and shooting a TV pilot in the 2-3 weeks before I left, pitching for brand partnerships, quitting my full-time job and this first few weeks of 90 days in the USA.

Anyway, in today’s podcast Troy and I talk about the how his and Paul Provenza’s TV show Setlist came to be, the wonderful array of inspiring guests they’ve had including Robin Williams, Australian comedian Wil Anderson, his multiple-award winning short film, Runyon: Just Above Sunset, starring Eddie Peptone, The Comedy Jesus Show, touring throughout the USA and around the world to comedy festivals including Montreal, Dublin, Calgary, Vancouver, Edinburgh, Melbourne, Sydney, London and much, much more.

Super inspiring chats with a highly intelligent and inspiring guy who is quite literally living the dream!

Podcast #48 Dilruk Jayasinha (stand-up comic and actor) podcast.

“Stay true to yourself and anything‚Äôs possible.‚ÄĚ – Dilruk¬†Jayasinha

It makes me so fuckin’ happy and excited to see someone so passionate and hard working in what they do. This is why I created this podcast – to surround myself with¬†like-minded, interesting and ambitious individuals, who inspire me with their hunger, drive and burning desire to love what they do. This in turn inspires me to push harder at my own goals.

International comedian, actor, podcaster and former accountant Dilruk Jayasinha is one of those.

You couldn‚Äôt wipe the smile off my face throughout this interview – humble, energetic and self-effacing despite his career choice,¬†Dilruk moved to Australia from Sri Lanka in 2004 to pursue higher education with an accounting degree, only to discover ‚ÄúCarlton Draught and white women‚ÄĚ and a career in stand-up comedy, that now has him traveling around Australia and the world performing alongside other international comedians of the likes of Wil Anderson, Sammy J & Randy and more.

With upcoming shows around Australia, including Melbourne International Comedy Festival (he sold-out 22 shows last year and had to book more), Adelaide Fringe Festival, recurring roles on ‚ÄúSammy J and Randy in Rickets Lane‚ÄĚ on the ABC and The Little Dum Dum Club podcast, Dilruk¬†Jayasinha¬†has that hunger for success that still sees him saying yes to hundreds of gigs, including those that are potentially lower than his station (my words not his), just to stay fresh, help him to keep honing his craft and to learn every day.

We have vast, ranging chats about¬†the invention of Beroffee (Berocca and coffee), the inspiration and careers of Ricky Gervais and Wil Anderson, riding elephants, nudie runs and smashing tinnies in accounting lectures (very rock & roll), Dilruk’s love & connection with his wonderfully supportive family, facing your fears through stand-up content,¬†tales of Dil‚Äôs time growing up in Sri Lanka, a few of my own Sri Lankan experiences in Colombo, Kandy and Negumbo as an international Emirates Airline flight attendant and so much more.

Fascinating podcast with a hilarious comedian, who left me feeling inspired and full of energy for my own dreams after an hour and a half with a like-minded soul.

Love it!

Gareth Reynolds tearing up LA Podcast Festival.

Interview #41 Gareth Reynolds (American stand-up comic, podcaster and TV writer).

Touchdown in L.A. for a month in the USA and I’m already having blast!

Spoke at¬†Social Media Week – Miami last week and my biz, ‚ÄėHot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet’¬†has¬†just spent the weekend¬†driving social media for Los Angeles Podcast Festival. Pretty‚Ķ¬†bloody… excited!

In just over a week, I’ve recorded podcasts with Dave Anthony, Steele Saunders & Nick Cody, Graham Elwood of Comedy Film Nerds,  Henry Wagons, been hangin’ in Hermosa and Venice Beach with one of my best mates, Andrew Bongiorno, who’s been building his career as an actor in Los Angeles the past few years Рbodysurfing the waves of LA’s beaches in this scorching hot weather after leaving behind the Australian winter, street-art walks around Venice, a shit-ton of delicious Mexican food that California’s renowned for and we punched out an epic Runyon Canyon hike with views of the picturesque LA skyline, Conservatory and Hollywood.

And then there’s this… wicked podcast chats with American stand-up comic, podcaster and writer, Gareth Reynolds.

I met Gareth briefly earlier this year during Melbourne International Comedy Festival through his podcasting partner-in-crime on The Dollop podcast, Dave Anthony, and we smashed more than a few beers together in Melbourne when Dave/Gareth were touring The Dollop and their stand-up shows around Australia in August.

We cover a diverse and mind-blowing array of content including The Dukes of Hazzard, Washington Redskins and nations that haven’t dealt with their racism, the deliciousness of travelling through Italy with your eyes welling up at the sight of the Statue of David in Florence, three key pieces of advice for anyone wanting to start a career in stand-up comedy, Tim Tam Slams, his journey from growing up in the cheesehead state of Wisconsin to English-born parents to university life in Boston, writing on a TV show in New York and building his career in stand-up, the impact that writing sketch comedy with writing partner Evan Mann has made on his career, kangaroo ball bottle openers, the Green Bay Packers, koalas & chlamydia and so much more!

¬†A wonderful, flowing and¬†hilarious chat with a guy that I‚Äôve found to be one of the friendliest and funniest dudes there is‚Ķ seriously… download his podcasts and come check out his stand-up sometime!¬†His sh*t‚Äôs the BOMB!

Oh yeah, and there’s a HEAP of photos of Gareth’s LA PodFest set and The Dollop at LA PodFest below.
This one’s a cracker! Enjoy!

Interview #19 РAllira Cohrs.

Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet is a weekly podcast interviewing inspiring individuals and successful entrepreneurs from around the planet across a range of industries (incl. music, film/tv, fashion, travel, comedy and more) about what makes them tick as people and drives their hunger for success.

Today’s podcast is with model, fitness ambassador & presenter, Allira Cohrs.

I came across Allira’s work as a beautiful, sexy & captivating model through Instagram and we connected through Twitter where I swiftly discovered that she was so much more than a pretty face and amazing body, but in fact an extremely hard-working, lovely, inspiring and highly motivated individual. We became buddies a few years back and when I was road-tripping up the east coast of Australia last week, I decided I wanted to finally catch-up for a chat and dropped her a line.

I’m pretty excited to share this chat and the photos on the blog page as we recorded this podcast at Skypoint Observation Deck on the Gold Coast in Australia. We were located on the 78th floor of Queensland’s iconic Q1 building, which is one of the tallest residential buildings in the world and has spectacular 360 degree views of the Australian coastline, surf, hinterland and more. Make sure you check out the pics on the blog & thank you so much to the venue manager Guy and all the people at SkyPoint that made this happen. It seriously blew my mind to be recording in such an amazing location and it’s given me inspiration for future podcasts and another wicked little idea that’s been brewing for a while now… (but I’ll have to keep that under wraps for now).

I‚Äôm still tingling a little as when we were trying to decide where to record the podcast, I was like‚Ķ well I don‚Äôt want to record at Allira‚Äôs house ‚Äėcause that‚Äôs a little forward as we hadn‚Äôt met in person yet and I didn‚Äôt want to record at my mate‚Äôs house I was staying at, so I got thinking‚Ķ maybe we can do it at a cafe near the beach‚Ķ that‚Äôd be nice‚Ķ and then no‚Ķ hang on buddy‚Ķ if you could record it anywhere at all on the Gold Coast, where would it be‚Ķ bingo‚Ķ light bulb goes off in my head. SkyPoint‚Ķ and then I remembered I actually have a friend connected with SkyPoint Observation Deck and so I gave them a call‚Ķ a few hours later it was all sorted‚Ķ man, it blew my mind¬†and it‚Äôs actually the perfect example of what I‚Äôm trying to get across with these podcasts.

If you set your mind to something, you can achieve almost anything. And if you want to do something, sometimes all you have to do is pick up the phone and ask.. or find out who that person is that you need to talk to and drop them an email. Not everyone you ask will say yes, but keep knocking on that door and eventually someone will say yes. We also all need to remember too that a no now‚Äôs not a no later‚Ķ I can‚Äôt tell you the¬†amount of no‚Äôs I‚Äôve had and then weeks/months/years later the¬†person I‚Äôve approached has come across my work or my¬†profile through a shared contact and all of a sudden I’m working on a wicked project.. That‚Äôs how it works. Not magic. Not luck, just a tenacious, hunger and determination.¬†Just do it.

Anyway, in this podcast Allira and I chat about her travels to war zones working with the Australian Defence Force, performing in Afghanistan hitting the deck while rockets are going off around you, BlackHawk helicopter pilot antics, religion, the truth about how much hard work actually goes into being a model and being your own brand, how to go about choosing your role models and much much more.

Such a sick chat and we could have talked for hours… sign of a good podcast!!!! And how’s this view!!!!

Interview #18 РDave Anthony.

Today‚Äôs podcast is with¬†American stand-up comedian, Dave Anthony.. For those of you not across his work, Dave is a writer and actor on Mark Maron‚Äôs TV show ‚ÄėMaron‚Äô, founder of LA Podfest, ‚ÄėThe Dollop‚Äô podcaster with Gary Reynolds (sorry Gareth :p) and is currently performing his one man show at Melbourne International Comedy Festival, ‚ÄėHot Head‚Äô.

This interview¬†was an exciting and rewarding one for me. Listeners to this podcast may not realise, but Dave Anthony¬†and Greg Behrendt‚Äôs now defunct podcast¬†‚ÄėWalking The Room‚Äô along with Wil Anderson and Charlie Clausen’s TOFOP podcast, were the catalyst and inspiration for my foray into podcast world for Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet.

Across the course of the 200+ episodes of the Walking The Room podcast I went through a very similar transitional journey in my life to Greg and Dave in that I was doing the hard yards to re-build a career that I both loved and struggled with at times. As they battled, grew and took their lives and careers to a new and positive level in parallel with my own life, so it was quite lovely to spend this hour or so with Dave.

We talk about his one man show¬†‚ÄėHot¬†Head‚Äô and the empowerment of facing your own behavioural flaws and¬†dealing with personal issues to become someone you love and that people want to be around, the difference between the American stand-up comedy scene and the rest of the Western world,¬†creativity and how we both found our way back the paths we were always¬†on and¬†a Dave Anthony’s career spanning 20 years in comedy, writing and acting in both New York and LA.

Anyway, let’s get into it!
