Work. Save. Work. Save. Reward. Work. Save.
This is the modern, western formula that I’m sure most of us have grown up with and in the past it certainly worked. But let’s face it: 2018 is an expensive world, mindsets and attitudes towards work are changing and it’s becoming more and more difficult not to compare yourself to every colleague, friend or Insta-famous model who are all living their best life. The modern world, particularly Generations Y, Z and beyond and facing enormous economic pressure and immense spiritual discord.
Do you have to put up with one to forgo the other?
On one hand we’re faced with a property market that’s nearly impossible to break into, working longer hours to combat wage stagnation with the knowledge that without a certain level of capital it’s going to be very difficult to follow our bliss.
On the other hand, what about our bliss? The old-school societal expectation of working in a well-paid, 40+ hour, high-stress job REGARDLESS of whether or not it’s an industry you actually enjoy is not at all a thrilling concept and unfortunately those who undertake such a mission are buckling and buckling hard. Gone are the days where one wants to work hard for their whole life in order to retire at 60, take a well-earned break and finally regain a sense of freedom.
The reality is we want to work hard at a job that is rewarding, fulfilling and abundant, we want the freedom to change careers based on our interests without judgement AND we want to experience life’s beauty and all it has to offer, preferably before we’re 60 years-old.
We want want it all and we want it now. So how do we get it?
Let me give you this frame of reference. Business analysts and health professionals from around the world mostly agree that an individual is likely to change careers between 3-7 times in their lifetime. So with this knowledge why are people more than ever dreading Monday? Why is there a stubborn residue of old, accepted social norms in regards to ‘sticking it out’ in a career you hate in favour of financial freedom? Why aren’t we giving ourselves the space to fail forward and forge multiple careers based on a commitment to Life-Work Balance?
In this week’s episode I take you through my unexpected career path that I forged solely through a commitment to choosing employment based on my dream lifestyle. From hospitality to university, from promotional work to aviation I share with you what I’ve learned from each profession and how I built upon it moving forward. If you told me 20 years ago about my career path of course, I would have laughed at you. Contrary to what you’re told in high school, I’ve learned that there is no one way to achieve financial and spiritual success. If you follow your bliss, listen to your gut and fail forward you’ll open yourself up to a life you never dreamed of.
Go on then. Choose your own adventure!

I am truly inspired by independent Australian singer/songwriter and producer Hayden Calnin.
Since 2012 Hayden has enjoyed radio play from high profile stations in the USA, UK and Australia such as Triple J, BBC6 and KCRW, he’s amassed over 15 million spins on Spotify, he’s been featured international music blogs such as Indie Shuffle, Stereogum and Pigeons & Planes, had his music featured on renown TV shows such as Suits, Parenthood, So You Think You Can Dance USA, The 100, Teen Wolf, MTV’s Awkward, Meet The Fosters and for the UK & Japanese official trailers for Oscar winning film, ‘Room’ and had The Vampire Diaries lead actor/director, Paul Wesley, reach out to him on Twitter as a fan, personally requesting to use the track on an episode he was directing in the final season of The Vampire Diaries
He’s sold out shows in Australia and the UK, to packed rooms in Paris and Berlin, had the pleasure of touring with the likes of The Antlers, Matt Corby, Brooke Fraser, Mat McHugh, Missy Higgins and so many more!
In today’s episode of Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! weekly iTunes entrepreneurship podcast we explore what Hayden Calnin’s latest EP ‘Dirt’ means to him, the mental health challenges of young adults, how it can affect them and those around them, 2 unbelievable “pinch me” moments that he’s experienced in his life thus far and just what drives Hayden Calnin to pursue this career in music.
This man is living, breathing proof of how pursuing your passions can thrust you to a life beyond your wildest dreams.
Let’s get into it!

Marriage Equality. The answer is YES!
I don’t jump up on the soap box very often and so when I do you can rest assured that it’s subject matter that I am SUPER passionate about!
On Friday night I was kickin’ it at home after hectic week working on the social media strategy for the launch of a new app, when it struck me… Why the hell hadn’t I recorded an episode of my show about Marriage Equality?
Being an ex Emirates Airline flight attendant with LOADS of mates who are LGBTIQA, I am super passionate about the #MarriageEquality vote in Australia and want to be able to utilize my Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet weekly iTunes entrepreneurship podcast and social media presence to raise awareness for the vote and the need for Australians to take part in the upcoming Marriage Equality vote.
More than 760 million people countries around the world live in 23 countries where same-sex marriage is already a legal right. How are we not on board already?? It’s a basic human right! Fact. We were the 2nd country in the world to given women the legal right to vote (yep, New Zealand beat us again 😃). How are we so far behind now??
I immediately shot a text to my home-boy Craig Mack, who is a Social Media Strategist (TEDx Sydney, The Pinnacle Foundation, UTS), model with Wink Models, blogger, brand ambassador (Beyond Blue, R U OK?) and openly gay Sydney man, to join me to create an exclusive show about #MarriageEquality and the upcoming plebiscite vote to legalise gay marriage in Australia.
We discuss his childhood growing up in Coffs Harbour as the son of a drug dealer and drug addict, a hilarious and heartfelt True or False quiz about the facts of Marriage Equality, hot pink pants on a Sunday, his exploration of his own sexuality and sexual orientation, some of the wicked content we’ve seen about Marriage Equality including Tim Minchin’s ‘I Still Call Australia Home’ Marriage Equality plebiscite parody, to Audible’s ‘Listen to Love’ six-part audio series that the platform partnered with The Equality Campaign to create, exploring marriage equality in Australia, LGBTQIA teen suicide prevention and MUCH much more.
Honestly, this is one of the most, beautiful, honest and wonderful shows that I have ever had the pleasure of recording.
I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do!

Ambition, Small Business & Pursuing Your Dreams – Where Should I Begin?
There is NOTHING in the world like being your own boss and getting paid to pursue what you love!
If you had told me in 2015 that I’d be making more $$$ in 2 days than I used to make in 5 and that I would be living 5 minutes walk from the ocean, working remotely from the home office every day (I commute to work via the kitchen 😃) and then creating podcasts, Instagram content and business development on my other work days, then I would have said to you “Let’s jump in the time machine and take me there immediately!”
From studying biochemistry to Emirates Airline senior flight attendant to music industry jack-of-all-trades to global award-winning social media strategist, my life has been a journey of design, chasing that “Life Work Balance”. Yep, you heard right… ever since I was 20 years old I’ve pursued an approach to life by focusing on jobs that allow me to live a certain lifestyle and chase what I love for living… travel, music & a life of creativity.
If you had told me 20 years ago I’d be a flight attendant living in Dubai for 6.5 years, I’d have pissed myself laughing… “No way!”, if you’d told me 12 years ago that I’d be working in social media for a living I’d have been like “What’s Social Media?” 😉 And I’m still rolling with it… last year I spent 3 months in California after leaving my full-time job and since moved to Bondi Beach in December, turned my podcast into a radio show on Bondi Beach Radio and took on my first university gig lecturing in Social Media Strategy at Macleay College in Sydney. WTF is happening right now?!! 🚀 Keep Pushin’!
Over the coming weeks & months, I am releasing a series of solo digital shows for free download via iTunes and the Hot & Delicious Rocks The Planet! weekly small business and entrepreneur podcast to help any of you who yearns for a life where you get paid to do what you love and chase your dreams.
This is the first show in this series is:
Ambition, Small Business & Pursuing Your Dreams – Where Should I Begin? –
- The 1st Steps – Decide What You Want & Follow Your Heart.
- The Top Tips and Tools – Clear A Path & Make That Start.
The next show in the series:
10 Tools & Tips for the Ambitious, Small Business Owner & Digital Nomad – Perform at your best whilst living life to the fullest!
What exactly is it that are you waiting for? There is absolutely nothing stopping you from taking the plunge except you. Make a start, make a start today!

Interview #11 – Smiling Mind app (tech/innovation)
Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome back to ‘Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet for 2015’. Last year, as existing fans will know, we caught up with Aussie comedian & TV presenter Will Anderson, kick-ass Aussie indie rockers The Griswolds, Regan Lethbridge from awesome Melbourne-based band Bonjah, fashion blogger Winston & Willow and so many more wonderful people.
I must apologise profusely for taking a longer break over the Christmas period than planned – but the 2nd half of 2014 saw me working 60-80 weeks, I must admit I was just exhausted and didn’t want to come back until I could dedicate my time and energy 100% to this new project that I love so much.
2015 is going to be a super year for the podcast, where we take things to another level – coming up over the next few months are interviews with social entrepreneur and founder of Thank You Group, Daniel Flynn, the enigmatic Carlo Santone and Natalie Rize of world-renown Aussie urban roots band Blue King Brown, a whole swag of Australian and international comedians as the buzz of Melbourne International Comedy Festival hits Australia and so much more. I am pumped!
I love this podcast episode. It’s 5:45am and I can’t sleep as I’m still buzzing and inspired by last night’s chat with the team at Smiling Mind meditation app. One of the main reasons I started ‘Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet’ is to chat with people who are doing what they love and who inspire me. In today’s podcast I get to hang out with Lucy Richards and Georgie Reed, two of the first people involved in the launch of Smiling Mind app.
Launched in Australia a few years ago, Smiling Mind now has over 500K users from aged 7 to young adults, business people like myself and even people my parents’ age. Smiling Mind’s 500,000+ users are living all over the globe and the app was recently featured in the New York Times.
I am not exaggerating when I say that meditation and Smiling Mind have changed my life. I first came across the app about a year and a half ago when I was chatting with Georgie’s partner, Rob, at a work lunch. He was singing the praises on how using this app on a daily basis had brought a certain calm and balance to his insanely hectic life as part of the Carlton Dry brand team at Carlton & United Breweries. He told me how his partner Georgie had left her job at a media agency to join this start-up called Smiling Mind.
Now I’ve had people speak with me about meditation and mindfulness a little previously, including one of my friends, the wonderful Narissa Doumani, who in fact launches her book in a month ‘A Spacious Life – Memoir of a Meditator’ (and we’ll be dropping an episode with her in a few weeks), but for me and I’m sure most people who now have meditation and mindfulness as a part of their life, to start meditating you’ve got to be in a place when you’re desperate to try anything to get some peace, calm in your life or just be curious enough to try.
For me it was the former. I’m not exaggerating or boasting when I say that I’ve done so many cool things in my life – I’ve lived in 4 different countries in Australia, Asia, Europe and the Middle East, put a 900 square metre ice-rink on the sands of Bondi Beach (the first of it’s kind anywhere in the world), created a role as the music supervisor of a snowboard show called Ballistyx Snowboard Show on Channel GO!, run music festivals & events around Australia, worked as a music festival photographer & run social media for a music festival, traveled the world for 6.5 years as an international flight attendant with Emirates Airline, the list goes on… but my whole life I always felt I was either running towards or running away from something (to steal a phrase coined by one of my fave podcasters). For the past 20 years of my life, I have had an unquenchable thirst for success and a happiness that I’ve never quite found. I have all these amazing things I’ve done/going on in my life and yet a year and a half ago I felt stressed out, always seemed to have that tightness of anxiety or dread in my chest and I was miserable… something had to change.
Now those of you who know me know that I don’t believe in God, but what I can say is that I am very spiritual. I used to think that exercise was all I needed to feel good, but even that wasn’t enough and not quite the tonic I was after. I’ve spent my life life wishing I was somewhere else… a little bit further down the path to my success… in 6 months I’ll achieve this goal and I’ll be happy, in 12 months I’ll be making this much money and I’ll be happy…. no… quite simply no. This podcast, in parts, may sound a little like we’re trying to sell Smiling Mind and to be honest, it’s almost impossible not to – each of the 3 of us are already sold on its virtues and the impact it’s made on our own lives. My whole life, I’ve gone my own way not wanting to conform or be dictated by society’s viewpoint on how I should live my life, the black sheep if you will… and yet with this… it just fits.
I am still as ambitious as ever, yet for the first time in my life I am living each and moment in the now. I walk down the street and unplug my headphones just to observe the people around me, to hear the birds singing and simply soak up the sounds of the city. When I’m out with friends for dinner, invariably people will be having a phone party at the table, shooting this foodporn for Instagram or checking-in at that place on Facebook. My phone pretty much always stays in my pocket these days. The only place I want to be now is here – in the moment. Mediation and the Smiling Mind app have helped me achieve a certain mindfulness. Now I crave, soak up and appreciate each moment I’m in and so that any time I feel like I’m stressed out or angry, it’s the key tool I utilize that pulls me back into check and gets me back in sync.
I’m going to step-off now and let you get into it. The first 1-2 minutes is a little disjointed as we were having some tech issues with the mics, then we chat about social media for about 6 minutes before kicking into the podcast proper at about 8 minutes, but make sure you listen to it all as there is some gold in there for any of you who are keen to get some advice on how social media works.
All I can say about Smiling Mind and this episode, is that if you’ve ever wanted ongoing peace and happiness in your life, you are actually really fucking close… I use this app and meditation in general about 5 times a week and the impact it’s made on my life is that big that it’s almost intangible. I wasn’t a cynic previously, but I just didn’t feel like it was for me, but after setting myself the goal of starting with 4-5 sessions in 5 days I can honestly say that meditation and mindfulness will be a part of my life forever and I won’t look back, so thank you Smiling Mind.
