Wow… my mind is BLOWN! 4 years later and 200th episode of the Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! weekly entrepreneurship podcast!

This week tech entrepreneur and RateBeer craft beer app owner Joe Tucker joins us on the show as they introduce their app into the Australian market with exclusive launch parties in Sydney and Melbourne.

RateBeer is a world site for craft beer enthusiasts dedicated to serving the entire craft beer community through beer education, promotion and outreach. ZX Ventures, AB InBev’s global growth and innovation division, invested in RateBeer two years ago, for $2M dollars in technology and the hiring of an Australian team to help drive the evolution of the global product.

Essentially, Australians will be able to buy “rare and highly-rated” beers through retail partners via the website, with additional enhancements including the introduction of push notifications and a clearer rate and review system.

Australia is RateBeer’s fourth biggest market globally, which makes it the perfect testing ground for the new developments. The company already has over 10,000 Australian beers logged from hundreds of breweries and we catch up with Joe Tucker at Odd Culture bar at the Taphouse Darlo as he launches the new RateBeer craft beer app into the Australian market. Exciting!

Social Media Strategy for your B2B and Small Business Starts Here.

Posted on Updated on

Nomad Brewing Co. Photography by Dan Wilkinson (Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet).

What are you missing from your B2B Business, Startup, Small Business or Small To Medium Enterprise digital media and content strategy right now? You probably don’t even know and it’s crucial that you take the time for the right advice!

There are a literally thousands of self-titled, self-appointed “Social Media Unicorns”,”Social Media Rockstars”, “Social Media Ninjas” and “Social Media Gurus” out there in the digital media industry, who will generate content that doesn’t ladder up to strategic business objectives, not designed for the user experience and won’t drive prospective consumers down the marketing funnel to conversion through lead generation and sales or loyalty. That takes a lot of more time, experience at scale working with the world’s biggest brands, an understanding for the user experience and how to connect the dots for client ROI.

That’s where my business comes in. Across the last 8 years of my life I have built a wealth of knowledge and experience as a global award-winning Senior Social Media Strategist and Content Producer across a range of industries including B2B, tech/apps, virtual reality, fintech, FMCG, beer/alcohol brands, Not-For-Profit, health & wellness, a global cosmetics brand, health insurance and travel.

Over the past 2.5 years I have and we have worked with the likes of Telstra Enterprise, Cancer Council Australia, Transplant Australia, Moula fintech brand, driven the launch of the Plant Life Balance augmented reality greening app (as part of The Bravery agency), Cherry Blooms global cosmetics brandMahlab Agency (on a global B2B digital client, hbf insurance), Soap Creative (PepsiCo snacking, Ferrero, Microsoft) and many more.

The key to that success has been a clear understanding of client objectives, knowing where their target markets are making purchase decisions, researching competitors, exploring the type of content consumers that connect with digitally, developing an understanding of the ever evolving technical capabilities of the major digital platforms, the platform strengths, data analytics and creating bespoke strategies with ad solutions that are most likely to drive the desired results for a client and their brand.

This success and knowledge has also been provided by the opportunity to work with Australian and global brands with 1M+ audiences and massive paid media budgets. THAT’s how you get to see what works at scale!

But there-in lies the challenge for many B2B Businesses, Startups, Small Businesses and Small To Medium Enterprises. All businesses and organisations want their digital media to be an immediate success and the vast majority quite simply can’t afford (or can’t justify) the retainers that the top creative/digital agencies want to charge to run their digital media strategy, content production and reporting. And quite frankly, many of these agencies still aren’t doing the job required despite the expense!

That’s why I’ve been changing the market with our business model. Over the past 2.5 years, we’ve worked both agency and client-side on 3 to 6 month projects (at various levels and designed to each individual business/organisational budget) to set-up our clients with full audits of organisational digital ecosystems and assets, content pillars that ladder up to brand goals as part of a marketing funnel, the development of 1-3 year strategic roadmaps, Best Practice Social Media Playbooks, digital media reporting frameworks, business-as-usual/campaign ideation, organizational training workshops, Issues & Crisis Management Escalation procedures, influencer outreach and driving efficiencies with the set-up of client internal/external systems, processes and ways of working.

The idea is that we teach you and your team how to fish, so that you can save thousands of dollars per month/year by producing your own brand content internally to a strategic plan, specifically designed dually to drive strategic business objectives and for the user experience, allowing you to free-up and reallocate much needed funds to paid media and other areas of the business, only relying on external resource for strategy updates, ideation and additional reporting consultancy/review on an as-needed basis.

We can also generate content and photographic briefs/brand books over that 3-6 month period (and ongoing if needed) to help create a consistent style and tone for your brand, so that the internal team members producing your content have brand guidelines and templates to work off.

I guarantee you that very few self-titled, self-appointed “Social Media Unicorns”,”Social Media Rockstars”, “Social Media Ninjas” and “Social Media Gurus” will be able to deliver what you need and it’ll save you a LOT of time, heartache and $$$ in the long run.

Whether it’s our business or someone else’s, I highly recommend that you only hire someone who actually knows how to provide all of the above with examples and it is in fact up to you now to ask the right questions from word go when it comes to your digital media strategy. I’ve provided a number of them above for you, even if digital media isn’t your strong suit.

Posted on Updated on

Wow, what an experience!

I am still coming down from the excitement that has been Telstra Vantage™ 2018 and yet I’m hitting the ground running on the hunt for my next contract/freelance project or full-time Head of Social Media/Social Media Director/Social Media Strategist role, preferably in Sydney or US-based, but do have clients in other Australian capital cities.

Across the past 3.5 months, I have been Digital & Social Media Lead for Telstra Enterprise on Telstra Vantage, the annual invite-only event 6,000+ customers on smart business tech and innovation held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. And what an experience it was!

Apart from the successful launch of the Telstra Vantage™ TV livestream/on demand service and watching our amazing onsite Enterprise Social Media team bring Telstra Vantage™ to life in digital, key event highlights from the 5 stages at event include the closing keynote from Thai cave rescue heroes, Dr Richard Harris and Craig Challen, as they related to our audience their experiences of the Tham Luang Cave rescue – dubbed “Mission Impossible” – in Thailand earlier this year, Neha Narula’s keynote on blockchain, bitcoin and cryptocurrency, the Business of Sport panel featuring Foxtel CEO Patrick Delany and AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan on how technology is influencing how we promote, broadcast, sponsor and watch sport now and in the future, the Women in Tech “Unstoppable force meets irresistible objective – empowering women in technology” panel and a plethora of the latest Telstra tech including 5G demonstrations, the evolution of drones and any number of partner activations from the likes of Cisco, Samsung, Microsoft and more.

As my role wraps up on the Telstra Vantage project for 2018, I’m excited about my next steps in the industry in Australia/abroad and effective immediately I am on the hunt for either a client-side or an agency-side role/contract and the 3 key elements that I’m seeking in new business opportunities are as follows:

  1. Digitally Progressive – you are a digitally progressive business/brand or you want to be (if you’re not there yet then, you want to pay someone who is and can bring you up to speed).
  2. Corporate Culture/Champion of the People – you foster a culture of inclusiveness from the top down and that is evident in the energy/experience of the people who work with you at all levels.
  3. Champion Great Work – contractors and employees describe your business approach as one that fosters big ideas and proactivity. Industry leaders not followers.

I am a global award-winning social media strategist, university lecturer, speaker, podcaster and content producer with experience across B2B, Fintech, FMCG, Travel, Beer/Alcohol brands, Not-For-Profit, Augmented Reality, Tech/Apps, Health & Wellness, Cosmetics, Health Insurance & more.

I drive strategy for medium to large size enterprises, both agency and client-side.

Over the past 2.5 years, my biz Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! has worked with Cancer Council Australia, Moula fintech, The Bravery, Dos Equis (via FWRD Agency), Cherry Blooms global cosmetics brand, Mahlab Agency (a global B2B digital client, hbf insurance), REBORN Agency and Transplant Australia providing a range of services including a full audit of organisational digital ecosystems and assets, development of 2-3 year strategic roadmaps, Best Practice Social Media Playbooks, development of Digital Media Reporting frameworks, Business-As-Usual/Campaign ideation, organizational training workshops, Issues & Crisis Management Escalation procedures/management, development of brand influencer networks and setting up of agency/client internal/external ways of working systems.

In a previous life as Social Media Lead at SapientNitro and Head of Social Media at Soap Creative across the Mondelez, Carlton & United Breweries, Microsoft, PepsiCo (snacking) and Ferrero portfolios, I have worked on social media strategy for a range of international brands including Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate, Philadelphia Cream Cheese, Peroni Italian Beer, Miller Genuine Draft, Bulmers Original Cider, Doritos, Tic Tac, Kinder Surprise, Nutella, Xbox and many more.

Dan Wilkinson. On The Hunt for Strategic & Creative Inspiration!

Posted on Updated on

Let’s play Guess Who? for Careers. Who Am I?

My name is Dan Wilkinson.

I am a global award-winning social media strategist, university lecturer, speaker, podcaster and content producer with experience across FMCG, Travel, Beer/Alcohol brands, B2B, Not-For-Profit, Augmented Reality, Tech/Apps, Fintech, Health & Wellness, Cosmetics, Health Insurance & more.

I am currently on the market looking at permanent roles in Los Angeles, Sydney (or remote), Austin, Portland (OR) or New York City as Social Media Director/Head of Social Media/Social Media Strategy roles.

Recently I wrapped a short-term contract as Head of Social Media at Soap Creative working across the Microsoft, PepsiCo (snacking) and Ferrero portfolios, including the likes of Doritos, Tic Tac, Kinder Surprise, Nutella, Xbox brands and many more.

My portfolio from the past 2.5 years includes APAC winner at the 2016 Facebook Awardsspeaking at Social Media Week – Miami, multiple global Kinsale Sharks Awards (Silver, Bronze, Bronze), case studies featured on both the Instagram and Twitter Global Business BlogsShorty Awards finalist in NYC & much more.

Over the past 1.5 years, my biz Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet!, has worked with Cancer Council Australia, Mahlab Agency (a global B2B digital client, hbf insurance), REBORN Agency, Moula fintech, The Bravery, Transplant Australia and Cherry Blooms global cosmetics brand providing a range of services including a full audit of organisational digital ecosystems and assets, Best Practice Social Media Playbooks, Digital Reporting templates, creation of systems and processes and 2-3 year strategic roadmaps.

I have forged multiple careers across my professional lifetime based on an overarching commitment to Life Work Balance (see my latest @hotndelicious podcast for more on this) and the Pursuit of Happiness.

Professionally I define the pursuit of happiness as:

  1. A business opportunity or career role that I am inspired by and passionate.
  2. That that has the potential for positive impact on the lives of others (through clients or the people that I’m working with).
  3. Whilst being paid appropriately for my services and level professional experience (unless I decide that it’s for professional development for myself/business/career or a philanthropic pursuit).

I’ve stayed true to this philosophy from my early 20s from my 6.5 years based in Dubai traveling the globe as an international Emirates Airline flight attendant to juggling numerous roles in the music industry (event operations & logistics/ TV show music supervisor/photography/social media/band management) to putting a 900 square metre ice-rink on the sands of Bondi Beach back in 2011, (the 1st of its kind anywhere in the world!) to today.

Every new role I step into, I must be feel like I’m contributing and learning at the same time – bringing my industry expertise to the table, whilst also continuing the evolution of my experience and professional toolkit.

I definitely prefer working agency-side or 1-on-1 with major clients and the 3 things I look for in new biz opportunities/roles/clients are:

  1. Digitally progressive –you are a digitally progressive business/brand or you want to be (if you’re not there yet then you want to pay someone who is and can bring you up to speed).

At this point, I’m rather convinced that my next big opportunity awaits in the USA, so I’m keen to work in:

  1. Los Angeles – Santa Monica, Venice Beach or WeHo.
  2. Austin (TX).
  3. Portland (OR).
  4. New York City – Manhattan or Brooklyn.
  5. Sydney – I love living in Bondi Beach, so if you think you’ve got the right opportunity, then get in touch!
  6. Remote – I can work from anywhere with a laptop and smartphone/wifi connection.

If the above blog article sums up the opportunity that you’re about to approach me with and what you are/your business is striving to be, then I want to work with you!

I am currently Bondi Beach-based, but more than happy to relocate to the USA at short notice for the right opportunity and below you’ll find a portfolio overview of previous clients, global award-winning campaigns successes and my own Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! digital presence.

3 Crucial Tips – Social Media Strategy, ROI & The User Experience 2018.

Posted on Updated on

Hot & Delicious Rocks The Planet! Generating more sophisticated Strategy and Content for your brand! Photo credit: Dan Wilkinson.

Hot & Delicious Rocks The Planet! – Global Award-Winning Social Media Strategy & Content Production for your brand.

Well now, what an amazing year 2017 has been!

After taking the leap of faith and leaving my role as Social Media Lead at SapientNitro Australia to step back into my own Social Media Strategy & Content Production business, I have relocated to Sydney from Melbourne (via Los Angeles) to take on Cancer Council Australia as a client, significantly diversified our depth of experience across a range of different industries, lectured social media strategy in university at Macleay College in Sydney for the first time, had my own radio show on Bondi Beach Radio and run a series of live podcasts including the International Business Review Conference in Melbourne just 2 weeks ago!

Over the past year or so, Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! have worked Cancer Council Australia, Planet Life Balance Virtual Reality Greening app, Moula fintech, Mahlab Agency (global B2B business, hbf insurance), REBORN Agency,  and Cherry Blooms global cosmetics brand providing a range of services including a full audit of organisational digital ecosystems and assets, the generation Best Practice Social Media Playbooks and Monthly Reporting templates, creation of systems and processes to improve internal/external ways or working and 2-3 year strategic roadmaps.

3 key points have only further solidified in my mind over this time. We as Social Media Strategists, Creatives and Account Management teams need to push our teams and our clients to be more sophisticated in the creation of through-the-line strategies and content that generate Social Social Media designed for the User Experience, Funnel Strategies that drive ROI and evolve our approach for the The Next Wave of Brand Influencer Campaigns.

Inspirational quotes do zero for your brand objectives unless you’re a meditation/yoga business or run a speaker agency, cat videos and dog memes aren’t suitable unless you’re Whiskas or Chum and generic lifestyle/beauty products laid out on a towel on the beach is just not doing much of value to sales or a connection with your brand.

If you haven’t implemented the following in your agency or brand yet, then this is where you need to start in 2018:

  1. Social Social Media + UX – Generate Content That You’d Want To See In Your Own Mobile Newsfeed. Don’t use social media to yell at people! Billboards ≠ Effective Content.
  2. Create a Funnel Strategy. Create strategic content and advertising campaigns to drive results and client ROI.
    1. Design or re-design your digital ecosystem with specific roles.
        1. Assess your current digital ecosystem.
        2. Determine where your target audience are playing.
        3. Assess what ad solutions best suit your objectives and target audience penetration.
    2. Ladder your Content Pillars -> Social Media Objectives -> Business Pillars.
    3. Utilize your content and ad spend as part of a Funnel Strategy.
  1. The Next Wave of Brand Influencer Campaigns – Pivot from the wanna-be Instagram model to working with and upskilling influencers to create campaigns with a measurable uplift in Sales and Return On Investment.

Want to delve into this further? Check out this LIVE at Future Social Media 2017: Social Social Media + UX, Funnel Strategy and The Next Wave of Brand Influencer Campaigns feature presentation and podcast that I recorded with Carat media agency Senior Business Manager, Harry McGoldrick at International Business Review Conference 2 weeks ago and download the accompanying deck/resources here!

And if you, your agency, your business, your brand or your client are looking to transform the way you approach social media, designed for both the User Experience AND ROI… then let’s chat. Drop me a line:
