The rise of Falls. The stuff that dreams are made of.

Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast series
Interview #40 – Falls (Australian folk rock band).
It’s that age-old love tale. Boy meets girl. Girl meets boy. They fall in love. Then they break up. And live happily ever after… as an internationally-signed folk rock band… ha ha… couldn’t help myself… True story though.
Melinda Kirwin and Simon Rudston-Brown AKA Falls are a duo from Darwin and NSW, who were originally a couple and now two friends, who are signed with a US record label (Verve Records), booking agent and management – helping them make the transition from independent Australian band to North American touring band.
Utilizing premier Australian music conference BigSound, Melinda’s experience with Eleven music company founder, John Watson at John Butler’s ‘the seed’ and the team at Sounds Australia as a launching pad for Canadian Music Week and South By Southwest, Falls signed a booking agent, management and lawyer on their North American tour in March 2013, followed later in the year by an approach from the Verve Records A&R team at CMJ Music Marathon, a 5 day music & film conference in New York City.
Flash forward 2 years and they have now spent the past 2 years living in the USA, touring the country and recording their debut album ‘Omaha’ due out on October 2nd worldwide! AND they launched their first single from the new album on the Wall Street Journal. Epic!
I’ve not caught up with these 2 since that 2013 SXSW tour when we met and became friends at SXSW in Austin, Texas and it was lovely to have them sitting on the couch in my castle in the sky telling all their tales from the road and what makes these two tick.
Ever wanted to know what it takes to make in the music industry? Then this is the podcast for you. They’ve poured blood, sweat, tears & a whole swag of hard-earned Benjamins into their career on the sniff of a chance to achieve success beyond their wildest dreams.
Truly an inspiration & makes me happy every single time I see their latest update on social media.
This is the stuff that dreams are made of.

Rakhal Ebeli founder & CEO, Newsmodo pioneering the changing face of journalism.
Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast series
Interview #39 – Rakhal Ebeli (former journalist, founder & CEO – Newsmodo).
One of the most exciting parts about the current age we live in is that most of us will now have not one or two, but multiple careers across span of our lifetimes – I myself have had many permutations – working behind the bar at Crown Casino in Melbourne, running music festivals and events around Australia, an international flight attendant living in Dubai and traversing the globe with 5-star hotels and pretty girls working for Emirates Airline for 6.5 years, music supervisor for Ballistyx Snowboard Show on Channel GO! and now I get paid to guide global brands in their ongoing social media strategy and campaigns… and that’s just a few of my jobs.
Like myself, Newsmodo.com founder & CEO, Rakhal Ebeli, is a fascinating guy who has transformed his professional career as his passions change, he grows as an individual and the news media marketplace evolves to an ecosystem almost unrecognizable from what it was just 20, 15 and even 5 years ago.
Having worked at Australian national television broadcaster Network 10 as a news reporter and presenter for 10 years, Rakhal original set-up the News.me app to improve the way people find and talk about the news, before creating Newsmodo – a content marketing agency that empowers businesses to connect with audiences through engaging and visual content, crafted by experienced journalists from around the world.
Newsmodo create content for brands and connect their global network of freelance journalists with their clients including international news media giants and brands such as M&C Saatchi, ANZ Bank, Suncorp Bank and more.
Today’s inspiring chat covers Newsmodo’s amazing work, including being first on the ground covering the Malaysian Airlines MH17 flight shot out of the sky in the Ukraine, providing news media footage for the likes of Associated Press, The Mirror, ABC, Seven News, Ten News, The Project.
We spend time talking about life-changing stories like the Black Saturday Fires, one of the most horrific and landmark events in Australian history, which Rakhal covered live – being the first man in the Network 10 offices on that fateful day, the fires a moment in time bigger in scale than anything he’d been equipped to cover, going into areas where his team were making on-the-fly decisions as to where they should position themselves to shoot broadcasts or seek refuge and then returning to these places to find these houses or positions only to find them razed by fire and the enormity of events as the day unfolded.
Across the course of the podcast we cover his journey from journalism to content creation, growing up in Fitzroy at time when gangs of thugs rather than flocks of hipsters roamed the streets of the northern suburbs of Melbourne, making a start in journalism whilst unemployed after returning from university in San Francisco and being taken under the wing of enigmatic Australian TV journalist & personality, Grant Denyer.
For those of you who work in the digital industry or aspire to, we spend time on branded content, hints and tips for how to make a start in content creation as a career and what makes great content great.
Fascinating individual, inspiring chats and we both could have honestly chatted on for hours – I thoroughly enjoyed catching up with Rakhal Ebeli, look forward to joining him on the Brand Storytelling podcast and to having him back again as a guest of on our very own Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast.

Hayden Calnin signs global music deal, new single & taking on the world!
Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast series
Interview #38 – Hayden Calnin (Singer/Songwriter & Producer).
I’d like to say that one of my skill-sets is being able to spot a like-minded soul at 10 paces and in many ways, prolific Australia singer-songwriter and producer, Hayden Calnin, is one of those.
At the moment, everything Hayden Calnin touches turns to gold – by holding himself to his “putting everything into what you do” attitude, Hayden has put himself in a position where the world is at his feet – from having music featured on hit American TV shows Suits/Parenthood/Teen Wolf, to the magic of his latest single ‘White Night’, festival slots at Falls Festival and NYE on the Hill and being asked by the next crop of amazing Australian musicians to produce their music.. just because they want to tap into his skill-set as a creator… HOWQUA, Eliza Hull… seriously.. watch this space…
Yes, the good news is if you’re not in Australia, Hayden Calnin is going to be coming to your home-town very soon… Europe, Canada, USA… all now targets on his hitlist having just inked a global booking deal with major players The Agency Group in North America and Europe, so if you haven’t heard his shit yet, I promise you will… very very shortly.
I invite you now to sit back and enjoy our chat, as we flick back and forth between his life in music and Hayden as a person covering everything from his favourite authors to the inspirational figures in his life, his first ever memory as a child at his German grandparents’ house hunting for Easter Eggs, life philosophies and his work with young Australians, teaching music and connecting with our youth at one of Melbourne’s juvenile detention facilities.
Love it! And man, the first time you hear this guy perform live, it’s like… “Wow, that just happened… I want more!” – a must see for anyone with a modicum of taste in live musical performance
Hayden Calinin. Selfless, soulful and inspiring… Enjoy!

Dan Sims. Wine Entrepreneur with a Currency of Kindness.

Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast series
Interview #36 Dan Sims (entrepreneur & wine festival founder – Bottle Shop Concepts).
Just say hello..
Bottle Shop Concepts founder, sommelier & wine festival entrepreneur, Dan Sims, is breaking down stereotypes and “taking the wank out of wine”.
Starting out in the wine industry as a sommelier, Dan Sims created a series large scale rock festival-style wine festivals in two different countries that he’s looking to take around the world – medieval dress-ups and chain-mail at Games of Rhones, Pinot Palozza, Wine Day Out and Vin Dieman, a celebration of all that’s great about Tasmania… these are just some of the wonderful events that the Bottle Shop Concepts founder is bringing to the table.
Today’s podcast is a story of two halves with the first hour focused around wine and the Bottle Shop Concepts brand, morphing into an inspirational exploration into Dan’s background, how he flipped a life-threatening tumour into a positive experience and making an impact with his “ currency of kindness” approach to business and his personal life.
Inspiring chats with someone who is quite clearly is on his way to greatness.

Interview #34 – Louna Maroun (YouTube vlogger, comedian and musician).
Yep, that’s right.. 3 YouTube Channels with 180K subscribers (Comedy, Beauty and Vlog Youtube channels)… seriously… living the dream! Ah-mazing!
Louna and I met briefly in passing when we were both speaking at Social Media Club Melbourne recently, but connected on Twitter and then I dropped her an email about coming along as my guest on the Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast, as while we create vastly different and diverse styles of content, I’m a sucker for like-minded souls, recognised one immediately and just had to have her on for a chat.
And chat we did… In today’s podcast we discuss the top tips that aspiring artists, businessmen and women should employ when making a start building their own brand/digital empire, tattoo artists and entrepreneur Kat Von D and why she’s a source of inspiration, Louna’s first every memory as a child (involves her dad, vomit and a chocolate bar – seriously 😀), white water rafting in Slovenia, rainbows and delving into special effects, all the wicked gear she uses to shoot/create her YouTube video content (Canon 60Ds, Black Magic, Adobe Premiere, Rode Shotgun mic, Zoom H4n (yes, Zoom gear is awesome!), creating content for open-minded, international brands, the wonders of treading your own path (in physical, a day-to-day sense and in life) and not being afraid to try things that you think you might like to do for a job… ‘cause you never know.. you might actually end up making it your life!

From Letterman to a career in comedy – the prolific Daniel Burt.

Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast series
Interview #33 – Daniel Burt (Aussie comedian, actor & writer).
Imagine being a writer on one of the world’s biggest TV shows!
Australian TV show writer, stand-up comedian, journalist and actor, Daniel Burt is prolific and determined. Determined to love what he does for a living. Back in 2005, Daniel put his money where his mouth is very early in his career when he took every cent he had and a chunk of change from his parents retirement fund to chase a job opening in the USA working as in intern in the writing department of the Late Show with David Letterman.
Success! Despite mistakenly opening up an alarmed fire door and evacuating the building on his first day in the job and walking into a door one of the first times he met David Letterman, Daniel Burt worked as an unpaid intern on Late Show with David Letterman for 6 months, gaining invaluable experience on a 5 nights a week comedy show with an audience of millions.
Since his return to Australia in 2006, Daniel has worked as a comedic writer on skitHOUSE, Good News Week, The Glass House and a range of other television shows including being one of the founding writers of Channel 10’s The Project TV.
Today Daniel Burt writes for Fairfax Newspapers in Sydney and Melbourne (Sydney Morning Herald, The Age), The Guardian (UK), has recently been asked to work as a full-time writer on comedian Charlie Pickering’s news comedy show, Weekly on ABCTV and has toured the world with his stand-up comedy to New York, Paris, the United Kingdom and of course Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
We cover a range of topics during our chat including his time with idol David Letterman, the impact that Letterman and Woody Allen have made on his career outlook, his earliest childhood memories, deep and meaningful conversations about ANZAC Day and what it means to Australians, the complexities of war and our respective journeys to Gallipoli, Villers-Bretonneux and Normandy.
There’s so much gold in here… Game time!

If it’s not fun then you’re missing the point – Aussie comedian Tom Ballard.
Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast series
Interview #32 – Tom Ballard (Aussie comedian, podcaster & writer).
“It’s just supposed to be fun. If it’s not fun then you’re missing the point…”
– Australian comedian Tom Ballard
I’m sitting here on my bean-bag in my castle in the sky after interviewing Australian comedian, writer, TV show creator and podcaster, Tom Ballard and I’ve got a little bit of a buzz on. No, I’m not drunk or high, I actually didn’t pull out a beer until 3/4 of the way through this podcast and it was good to interview without beers for a change… I’m just sitting here soaking up the afterglow that I get every time that I record this podcast. I love the intimacy and learnings of a one-on-one with interesting, inspiring people who are working their absolute backsides off to do what they love! Happiness!
Anyway in today’s podcast chat, Tom and I cover a range of topics including his upcoming international comedy tour to Montreal, Edinburgh Fringe Festival and London where Tom’s performing his one-man show, Taxis & Rainbows & Hatred, which is a “a blistering hour of stand-up about love, sex loneliness and finding the courage to be one’s self,”, the recent Dawn Fraser vs Nick Kyrgios saga and the casual racism that’s still so prevalent in Australian society, the decision to leave a highly successful role at triple j radio career to continue pursuing a full-time career in stand-up comedy, reminiscing back to 2011 when we met and involved in the launch event of triple j unearthed radio station, inspirational figures in his life and so much more.
Super super chats and since the recording I’ve been loving catching up on episodes of Tom’s own podcast ‘Like I’m A Six-Year-Old’ where Tom sits down with fascinating individuals like Arj Barker, Dan Ilic and Waleed Aly to talk about politics, the way society works and just learn about people. ‘Cause that’s how we work out who we are right?
At a time in my life where I’m loving my career and the projects I work on outside of my 9-5, in the back of my mind is the ever present yardstick that I hold myself to “Am I at where I want to be? What would I do with my life right now if I could do anything?”… Tom’s outlook on life and thoughts from the podcast couldn’t have rung more true to me. Amongst others they are this..
“When you’re starting out you’re kind of obsessed by breaking, your big break and the thing that’s going to make a name for yourself. Life is long and career’s are long.. you are not any one gig, you are not any one TV show. You are not any one job or any one project in one job… the long term view is a very healthy thing to have, then the deciding factor is your commitment to the thing you want to do and how hard want to work at it to make it happen.”
“Opportunity cost is a fact of life. (as a result of leaving triple j) I went on to tour a lot more and do a TV show and now I’m about to go overseas which I couldn’t be doing if I was on radio.”
Words from the guru. Chasing the dream, living the dream. Let’s get into it!
