Damian Costin has been in the music industry for over 20 years. Starting out as the drummer of Australian rock band Motor Ace in the late 90’s performing shows with bands including the Foo Fighters, Oasis and Blink 182, Damo switched to the other side of the fence and hit the ground running as one of the top bookers in the Australian industry and a few years back founded his own artist booking agency and corporate business called 123 Agency.

123 Agency boasts an super impressive artist roster that is testament to the hard work of Damo and his 123 Agency team. There’s a whole BUNCH of my favourite Australian artists and bands including Kingswood, Tash Sultana, Ash Grunwald, Harts, Pierce Brothers, Clairy Browne, The Delta Riggs and shitloads more.

He’s also back behind the kit in Aussie band Nighthawk. We have SUCH much to talk about and get through including the evolution of 123 Agency, some of your artists including Kingswood and Tash Sultana… so let’s get into it.

Enjoy the show!

On a cold winter‚Äôs morning in Collingwood (Melbourne), I meet Ashleigh Hills,¬†Tram Sessions GM, 123 Agency project manager and Woodlock acoustic/folk trio’s band manager for the first time. Originally from Dunedin, New Zealand, Ash arrived in Melbourne 7 years ago with no real concrete career plan and then stumbled across the Tram Sessions, a not-for-profit project that sees some of Australia‚Äôs most talented musicians perform live guerrilla concerts on Melbourne‚Äôs most popular method of transport, which is filmed and shared out to the masses.

With well over 3m views on YouTube, Tram Sessions boast a wealth of premiere established and emerging talent of the likes of Vance Joy, Gotye & The Basics, Aussie icon Paul Kelly, Alpine, Kingswood, Bonjah & many more. If you’re a person who craves discovering the wealth of new talent in the Australian music scene, then this YouTube channel is tailor-made for you!

Today‚Äôs chat about Tram Sessions,¬†Woodlock, Ash’s journey of professional development through a range of 123 Agency music industry roles and Porch Sessions,¬†felt hanging out with an old friend and a what wicked way to start the weekend early. It‚Äôs was so energizing to spend an hour or so with a like-minded soul who has built a lifestyle and career for herself pursing her passions and I thoroughly enjoy surrounding myself with people like this, because ultimately we only have one life and it‚Äôs a short one, so why shouldn‚Äôt you spend your working hours doing something you love?

Zac Abroms (Viceroyalty) – Travel the world & work in the music industry

Interview #5 ‚ÄstZac Abroms (Viceroyalty, S.T.E.P.) – Music Industry

Good morning! Zac Abroms is a buddy of mine that I met a few years back when my business was running social media for Pyramid Rock Festival Рan Australian music festival on Phillip Island just an hour or so out of Melbourne.

Beautiful little spot and magic memories of Tame Impala bringing in the New Year, chatting backstage with the humble and lovely Xavier Rudd and getting to know a bunch of amazing people including the boys from Kingswood, Zac Abroms, Ash Sambrooks of Higher Plains and Zac’s sister, Charlotte, of Large Noises. Zac and Ash’s respective businesses were looking after all the festival’s PR & Publicity and that festivals remains one of my happiest and proudest personal achievements as I basically got paid to hang out at a music festival, meet a shitload of cool people and share those memories with the world… or at least the work of Pyramid Rock fans & music-lovers.

Zac runs a music business called Viceroyalty providing online music publicity for a bunch of amazing Australian and international artists including Kimbra, Jessie Ware, Regina Spektor, Active Child, Bertie Blackman and many many more. He also has a music management business managing a few Aussie acts that I love including Manor, Danvers and the beautiful Kate Martin.

This year Zac and Ash Sambrooks also set-up The Society of Tastemakers and Elegant People (yes, it’s very tongue-in-cheek :D) also known as STEP which is a series of music industry events with live panel discussions and interesting live musical performances designed to connect people Рmatch-matching video directors and photographers to bands and artists to mixers and producers.. mixing promoters with record labels and artists, but the beauty of it all is that absolutely anyone can come down and when I attended their first event a few months back, the bar was rammed with everyone from grassroots artists to seasoned music industry professionals and even newbies to the scene who don’t care what they do but just really want to work in music. It was awesome!

So as most of you know by now and to our 1st time listeners, welcome, this podcast is designed to tap into the lives and experiences of people who inspire me, help them tell their story and hopefully inspire a few of you along the way to chase what it is you love in life… ‚Äėcause I tell you there is no better felling!

Enjoy!

St Kilda Festival Sunday you complete me.. I feel free.. I feel happy!

Luna Park - St Kilda

There’s nothing better than a cheeky pint at The Esplanade Hotel as the sun goes down over Port Phillip Bay.

Whenever I think about St Kilda & St Kilda Beach, I get a warm fuzzy feeling about one of Melbourne, no Australia’s premier live music venues, The Espy, and the iconic summer street party that is St Kilda Festival Sunday.

Every year the streets of Melbourne’s bayside suburb are blocked off in preparation for 300,000 – 400,000 people flocking to it’s precinct for 9 days of culture & entertainment. The pinnacle of the event, Festival Sunday, features 8 stages, countless busking performers, open-air cafes, street markets with all sorts of trinkets and restaurants/cafes boasting a delightful array of delicacies from around the world.

As always last Sunday was an amazing day with blue skies and temperatures hitting the mid-thirties (that’s 95 Fahrenheit for all my USA friends), tempered by cool breezes blowing in off Port Phillip Bay.¬†I started the day with Kingswood¬†playing the main stage by the beach on St Kilda foreshore. Smashed a few cheeky ales in the new temporary bar area on the hill and checked out the latest killer tunes by this Melbourne rock band who have been in Nashville recording with Jack White’s producer, Vance Powell (also Arctic Monkeys, Kings of Leon).

St Kilda Festival Sunday 2014

Not wanting to be fenced in all day, myself and my buddy Nick took an American friend along St Kilda Esplanade to show her the iconic sights like the Luna Park, the Palais Theatre, McDonalds, Grey St.. oh wait.. take a few pictures and telling her tales of St Kilda’s history (and our own drunken exploits) before wandering back to The Espy for a drink. Back in 2009, I held my 1st of ever Hot & Delicious event at The Esplanade Hotel’s Gershwin Room, so it holds special memories for me and I love this joint, but $10 cover charge.. where was the music??

After a few cheeky jugs of Bulmers, we were craving the open air and sunshine, so we cruised outside and down along Fitzroy St where we sat in one of St Kilda’s many outdoor eateries, soaked up more cold refreshment, afternoon rays and long chats putting the world to right.

A small part of felt like I should have seen more of the live indie Australian music that St Kilda Festival is known for, but in reality for me this day is all about going with the flow and soaking up what is one of the most fantastic events on the Australian summer calendar…¬†

Kingswood + Bertie Blackman live at The Corner Hotel.. Possibly the best rock photography you’ve ever seen ūüėČ

Posted on Updated on

Kingswood live at The CornerJet-set everybody! Kingswood have wrapped a killer Australian tour and they are USA bound!

Last Thursday Hot & Delicious hit Kingswood’s sold-out ‘Ohio’ single launch at The Corner Hotel (Melbourne). Supported by Bertie Blackman + Lurch & Chief, Kingswood delivered their usual punch of wicked riffs, soaring vocals, cheeky chat between tracks and kick-ass live show. And when lead singer Fergus Linacre stopped the last song halfway through to have the whole Corner Hotel crowd get down on their knees.. cherry on the cake! Seriously one of our favourite live bands right now.

The 2nd half of 2013 sees the Melbourne lads jetting off to Nashville’s Blackbird Studio to record their debut album with Jack White’s long-time Grammy-winning producer, Vance Powell, back to Australia for a couple of festivals, a string of USA shows and then back to Aussie again for the summer festival circuit.

The banter, the stage-craft, balls & all rock & roll.. Kingswood are destined for glory!

Kingswood short film ‘Some Motherfucker’s Gotta Pay’ gettin’ mad love!

Posted on Updated on

Kingswood’s ‘Some Motherfucker’s Gotta Pay’ is getting mad love on the internet this week & deservedly so!

Last weekend we cruised down to the killer space at¬†Eureka Rebellion Trading (Collingwood) for a few cheeky Asahis, Sailor Jerry’s and the world premiere of Kingswood‘s short film ‘Some Motherfucker’s Gotta Pay’.

Shot in Sydney, iconic live music venue The Annandale and rural NSW, this classic, blood & gore Tarantino-style flick is the product of Wonder World Films and features¬†an all-star cast with Seth Sentry, Thelma Plum, Sticky Fingers, Kira Puru, surfing legend Reg Mombassa, Dan Rule (previous owner of The Annandale Hotel) and¬†lead guitarist Alex Laska‘s wheels. What started out as the music video for their latest single ‘Ohio’ ended in a mad hilarious short with The Black Wax Widow Makers, guns, sex beasts (cars) & scandalous activities!

Love seeing indie bands re-innovate the digital space and this clip made my fucking week. What was no doubt a lot of hard work and long hours (and a shitload of fun), is made to look easy by the band and clearly displays their love for art, their music & not taking themselves too seriously.

June & July sees the Kingswood love continue with an epic run of national shows that’s kicked off this weekend including performances with Spiderbait, British India, Bertie Blackman and an action-packed line-up at River Sessions (QLD) with Bliss N Esso, Boy and Bear, Karnivool, Illy, Ball Park Music, Dead Letter Circus and many more!

Crack yourself a cold one, kick back on the couch & enjoy the ride.. Some Motherfucker’s Gotta Pay!
