Joel “Mulga The Artist” Moore is one of most Sydney’s most prolific street artists and he is living proof that you can Choose Your Own Adventure to get paid to love what you do!

Disillusioned by the drain of corporate life, over a short 2 year period Mulga transformed his world from selling t-shirts at Bondi Beach Market in Sydney on weekends to driving enough revenue to support his family through artwork sales, that he was able to leave behind the 9-5 grind.

On today’s show Joel describes to us his earliest ever memory growing up in The Shire, the excitement of creating animated artwork with the Coca Cola brand for Sydney’s iconic Kings Cross Coke Sign, aspirations of a Mulga-inspired TV show and theme park, painting the COOLEST birthday presents for his young kids, his upcoming business trip to Japan and much, much more.

Joel “Mulga” Moore is a shining example for any of you who have ever aspired to get paid to love what you do! It is possible… and all that you have to do is make a start… since stepping away from the day-to-day grind, Mulga has painted artwork collaborations with countless global brands including the likes of Red Bull, MTV, adidas, Virgin Mobile, Foxtel, Microsoft and Tradie Workwear.

So step inside the world of Mulga The Artist, have a listen to the podcast and tell me what you think!

Wanderlust. Having lived in 4 countries, eight different cities and spent 6.5 years travelling the world as an Emirates Airline international flight attendant, means that I harbour an ever-present yearning and burning desire to drop everything, pack my bags and jump on a jet-plane around the globe.

In just 4 weeks, I am jetting off to the USA for at least 3 months and in some ways this very post is the 1st for phase 2 of the Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! project – an entertainment, travel and lifestyle blog and brand that I designed to be the vehicle that I can use to drive me to do what I love for a living.

I conceived the original iteration of Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! in 2010/11 after reading a book called ‘The Hot Zone’ by Kevin Sites. Back in the day, Kevin Sites was a network news producer and war correspondent on American TV for CNN, NBC and ABC, who traded his high profile career to become the first ever internet journalist for Yahoo! News. Subsequently, in his ground-breaking project ‘The Hot Zone’, Kevin travelled to and reported from 20 different war zones around the world in 1 year, reporting from these war zones via a combination of video, still photography and written content.

After consuming this wonderful journey on paper, I felt re-inspired to continue to find a way to travel the world doing what I loved for a living. In my previous life with Emirates Airline, I’d been living the dream; in a different capital city every few days, travelling the world, 5-star hotels, disposable income, pretty girls… it was like the rock-star’s lifestyle without being the rock-star and when I returned to Australia in 2006, I was determined to win back that same lifestyle, but on my terms (these days it’s more focused on travelling the world doing what I love than the party boy lifestyle 😉).

At the time (2010/11), I was working in the music industry and the original concept for ‘Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet!’ was to travel around the world over the course of 12 months to all the major music festivals including Coachella, Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, Reading Festival, Fuji Rock & more, reporting from these festivals with a combination of video, still photography and blogging.

Jump in the time machine to present day and what I desire has evolved beyond just that of the music industry to a life where I’m paid to travel the world, interview inspiring individuals and entrepreneurs across a range of industries, share their tales, capture & create my own and so much more…

I’ve never lost the fire all this time and this is why 10 years on I’m jetting off to America for at least 3 months, to pursue the next phase of this dream that is my life. However during this time, particularly since starting meditation a few years back, one of the most valuable things I’ve taught myself is to appreciate the now… each & every moment; to learn more about this wonderful city I currently live in and temporarily sate these yearnings of wanderlust with excursions around the city I’m in. It gives me a little high and makes me feel alive!

Whether it be after work or craving inspiration on a weekend, I’ll take myself on long bike rides down to St Kilda Beach or along Yarra River trail rides with my DSLR to soak up one of the world’s most liveable cities and this beautiful country we live in. I’d do exactly the same if I was living in Sydney or Brisbane and have done so in the past when I was living in Bondi Beach and Kangaroo Point. You should too no matter what city you live in. I guarantee it’ll open up your eyes and open up your world.

Australia is definitely the lucky country that so many of us take for granted and if more of us made an effort to explore and appreciate the magic of Australian life, I think that we’d realize just how lucky we truly are.

Inspirational walking street-art tours in Melbourne – Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet.

Inspirational Melbourne walking street-art tours of Melbourne with Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet

I fuckin’ love Melbourne’s street-art scene…  the coffee, the beer, the cool bars… of which this beautiful city has plenty of all in abundance.

So my gift to all you lovers out there is this perfect little street-art walk that I did last Friday at random.

After my 1st week in 2.5 years working from the home office, I wrap up work for the day at 3pm, grab my Canon DSLR & stroll to Degraves St for a double shot latte at my favourite little joint down there, Cafe Andiamo.

From there, I wander through the backstreets of Melbourne CBD via Centre Pl, through Block Arcade and Union Ln (which almost always has artists at work or fresh paint) to Bourke St Mall, then head up Bourke St cutting left through Brien Ln to Lt Bourke St and into Croft Alley (never fear – there’s a map & pics below).

If it’s open, then I highly recommend dropping into The Croft Institute at the very end of Croft Alley for a cheeky cocktail to freshen up & chill.

The final leg of the journey involves walking down Lt Bourke St to Tattersalls Ln and along Tattersall Ln to one of my favourite bars in Melbourne, Section 8.

Rain, hail or shine, Section 8 is a wicked bar with killer tunes, open 7 days a week (both day & night), and the bar itself and the alley surrounds is alive with a whole swag of street-art by amazing artists, including a beautiful lady on the bricks above Section 8, by one of my favourite artists, Rone.

Tell ’em Dan sent you… And they’ll stare at you blankly 😃

But this is just a taste of what Melbourne has to offer… Enjoy! And feel free to share the love! ❤️🍻

The Paterson Project – Majestic street-art for the most perfect cause.

The Paterson Project - Street-artists raising funds for the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation

Streetart exhibition raises funds for Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation

Anyone who knows me knows how much I’ve fallen in love with Melbourne’s street-art scene over the past few years and so as exhausted as I was after a hectic week, nothing could stop me jumping on my bike and riding late through the wet streets of Melbourne on Friday night to attend a wonderful event on Smith St in Fitzroy for the most perfect cause.

The Paterson Project was held at heritage-listed Paterson Building where over the course of the past week, over 100 artists, including the likes of Rone, Adnate, Mayo, DVATE, Facter, Alexandra Lederman and many more, dedicated their time to decorating the walls of this grand old building with their works of art to be auctioned off to raise funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Packed to the rafters with more hipsters than you could poke a beard at, it was wonderful to be able to appreciate so many majestic pieces of art in the one place and I wandered up and down the 3 floors of this living and breathing masterpiece for over an hour.

One of my simplest weekend pleasures is to spend hours wandering previously unexplored alleyways or even streets that I think I already know around Melbourne, with the prospect of stumbling upon some unexpected beauty…

Occasionally, I’ll overhear people bitching about their favourite piece being tagged by some young punk or being covered up by a new piece of artwork that they don’t like, but what they don’t consider and they’re missing is that there-in lies its beauty – street-art is the perfect, symbolic reflection of life on this planet – beauty is everywhere, fleeting and quite often in the last place you’d expect to find it… captivating in one moment and then gone the next – as such it helps teach us to appreciate every single moment for what it is and even when it fades or is gone, becomes a part of us forever.

Beauty is everywhere. Enjoy!

Apologies to any artists who’s names we’ve missed or for any incorrectly labelled artworks. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch so that we can update accordingly.

Melbourne – just how I like my city life

Posted on Updated on

Ferdyduke - Melbourne

The weekend is my time and this one just gone, one of my close Sydney-based Melbourne-raised mates, Krys, came south of the border to soak up what Melbourne’s culture has to offer – Killer coffee, live sport, street-art and music.

Friday night we hit AAMI Park for the Melbourne Rebels Super 15 match, where Melbourne’s latest sporting team were beaten by the top of the table  South African side, Durban Sharks, despite dominating possession and ample opportunity to come away with victory.

Saturday morning I took Krys out in search of some of Melbourne’s finest coffee, food and service at Di Bella Coffee Roasting Warehouse in North Melbourne, sparked up a conversation with a beautiful, friendly Italian-Australian woman (and even babysat the dogs she was dog-sitting for a while), followed by a stroll around Queen Vic Markets, antipasti lunch + chilling, arvo walk around some of Melbourne CBD key street-art highlights and Eliza Hull live at Northcote Social Club, supporting Hayden Calnin‘s latest EP launch.

Lazy day Sunday, but this is just how I like my city life and here are a few wicked pics from our street-art jaunt + the show.

Sating my sense of wanderlust.. without even leaving the city.. Streetart & Photography..

Pretty lady on the Fitzroy backstreets

There’s this fire burning inside me.. in my life I’ve lived in well over half a dozen cities in Australia, the Middle East, Italy and Indonesia.

Based in Dubai from 1999 – 2006 working for Emirates Airline, I jet-setted extensively across the planet every few days visiting many unusual and inspiring places. At the time it sated the sense of wanderlust I’ve been possessed with from when I was a kid, but since my return to Australia it has only served to fuel my hunger for the constant stimulation of new experiences, to explore the world and exist in new environments.

In lieu of jumping on a jet-plane across the planet on a week-to-week basis, in a city as diverse as Melbourne it is actually possible to escape, explore hidden bars and alleyways and to lose yourself in a different world as needed.

Just 5 minutes from Melbourne CBD, Fitzroy’s backstreets are an evolving gallery of amazing, urban artwork and just one of the many experiences you can enjoy exploring this city with a DSLR/smartphone and a few hours on your hands.

Sometimes happiness and peace don’t have to cost the price of a plane ticket.

Aerosol Alley 2 – the magic of Melbourne streetart.

Posted on Updated on

Melbourne… the self-proclaimed sporting, music, food & cultural capital of Australia. And a significant part of the melting pot of culture & a reflection of Melbourne’s diverse walks of life reside in its street-art. I love this city.

2 years back, webzine Invurt.com and local artist Wayne Tindall started a project in Melbourne’s inner-city backstreets to transform a seedy Windsor laneway into a gallery and meeting point for Australia’s finest street-art.

Travelling under the unofficial nickname of “Aerosol Alley”, the laneway eventually captured the imagination of the local council, Stonnington, who renamed the space “Artists Lane” and encouraged rather than hindered the project. A positive sign of the times.

Now supported by local businesses and the local community, last weekend Wayne and the Invurt.com crew threw a party for Aerosol Alley’s 2nd birthday and celebrated by reinvigorating Artists Lane with live painting by 20+ of Melbourne’s top graffiti & street artists.

Perfect blue skies, urban beats and a few cheeky ales gave way to this a little laneway of magic.

Beauty is Everywhere.
