Boom! Bondi Bandits represent. Social enterprise at its best. Tuck into this Bondi Beach podcast with 2 of my favourite Bondi Beach residents and co-founders of Bondi Bandits, Amy Lynch and Annie Pryor, who are tackling global problems by launching their brand at a local level.

Bondi Bandits is a social enterprise created to provide solutions to the world’s plastic pollution. Amy and Annie have developed eco, recyclable and sustainable surfing apparel for the children’s surf industry, using discarded and recycled fishing nets.

Not only are they a startup business striving to make a positive environmental impact…. Bondi Bandits are champions and advocates for young women around the world, supporting Free to Shine, a charity fighting to put Cambodian girls in schools and out of brothels. With every swim bag, trucker hat or piece of kids swimwear that you purchase – you’re supporting them too. And they’re set to scale!

So many laughs and such a pleasure to hang out with and talk to. Get on board! Download the Bondi Bandits podcast and learn more on how Bondi Bandits are changing the world!

Australia is the 2nd country in the world to launch “Messenger Day” | Facebook’s new feature!

Posted on

pjimage-1

Facebook “Messenger Day” rolled out in Australia on Tuesday, making it the 2nd country in the world that Facebook have launched their new social story-telling functionality on Messenger.

Clearly inspired by the success of Snapchat and following the launch of Instagram Stories, Facebook has focused the testing and release of this new feature in international markets where Snapchat usage isn’t nearly as high as Facebook Messenger, in an attempt to build an audience of users who will then influence other users to adopt this new feature (Poland was the test market out of interest).

As always when Facebook updates their apps, you’ll see a backlash from a proportion of users who struggle with change and love a good whinge, however interestingly enough, this time I’ve observed that same backlash from a proportion of friends of mine who actually work in the digital media industry like myself and/or are regularly passionate first adopters.

The feedback from the younger demographic of social media users is that “we’re already time poor as it is and don’t have time for Snapchat, Instagram Stories AND Messenger Day.” To them, this is also clearly just a blatant copy of existing technology that’s working… which Facebook and Instagram put their hands up and freely admit that it is.

“Just like when Facebook invented the [News] Feed, and every social product was like, ‘That’s an innovation, how do we adapt that to our network?’ You’re going to see stories pop up in other networks over time, because it’s one of the best ways to show visual information in chronological order”
– Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom when Instagram launched “Instagram Stories”.

I’m not saying that Facebook Messenger Day doesn’t have a place for a proportion of the digital market, as no doubt, as a number of existing Facebook Messenger users will adopt Messenger Day into their lives, however lot of my younger friends use Snapchat as their main tool of communication (including more than text messages), so Messenger Day certainly won’t be something that replaces Snapchat (in the short-term at least) for the youth market.

It does definitely make sense for an organization like Facebook to adopt game-changing digital technology from competitor platforms that fits with current social media behaviours and more personalised storytelling, whilst still sinking millions into development of new Facebook-powered social media apps and features, however they need to keep their eye on the ball and continue to develop different innovations in the medium to long-term to “push” their relevance with their younger audiences.

Brands and agency media buyers beware. This “new” Facebook Messenger Day feature won’t necessarily be the magic solution for reaching 14-25s with your marketing, if and when it becomes available for advertisers.

But Facebook do have money to burn, so watch this my space 😉😜 for newer technologies that they develop that might be!

Facebook launch ‘Reactions’ featuring 5 New Options Alongside ‘Like’ Button.

Facebook launch 'Reactions' - 5 New Options Alongside 'Like' Button
Facebook launch ‘Reactions’ featuring 5 New Options Alongside ‘Like’ Button

Less than an hour ago, Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg announced to the world the much debated upgrade to Facebook Likes… the ‘Reactions’ feature.

Facebook users can now Like, Love, HaHa, Wow, Sad or Angry… content creators, brand social media managers and community managers who’s brands already see a high volume of negative social media traffic are rejoicing the fact that there’s no “Dislike” or “Thumbs Down” button…  sure the ‘Angry’ and ‘Sad’ Reactions are there, but I’m personally rather pleased that the positive Reactions outweigh the negative 4-2, because let’s be honest… There are already enough trolls and whiners out there on the internet as it is. Let’s not further feed their unconstructive and negative behaviour.

I’ve personally trialled Reactions on both my iPhone and laptop this morning, so I dare say that it’s rolled out worldwide already and can confirm that it is super user-friendly (See image below).

To react, all you have to do is hold your finger or thumb down on Facebook’s “Like” button on your Smartphone and select which of the Reactions you’d like to use on a post by your friends or one of the Facebook Pages that you follow on Facebook (click on the blue thumbs up icon to select your ‘Reactions’ on laptop).

Ultimately the addition of  Facebook Reactions appears to be a fairly cool addition at first glance, but what functional value it brings to high profile celebrities or brands, how it impacts on the Facebook Algorithm (how content is prioritized for your individual Newsfeed) and how agencies report on it to their clients (if at all) remains to be seen.

Now it’s time for you to go have a play. Let me know what you think & enjoy!

Melbourne, coffee & streetart – why Facebook video is the way forward.

Posted on Updated on

#Melbourne, #coffee & #streetart by Linchpin Studios
                                       ‘#Melbourne, #coffee & #streetart’ by Linchpin Studios

Melbourne, coffee & street art. Is there anything more iconic to Melbourne life?

And this walking video tour from Flinders St Station through Degraves St and down the graffiti alleys of Melbourne CBD by Linchpin Studios just captures that vibe wonderfully!

Despite the choice in music selection (apologies Mick! 😜 – that’s just my personal opinion, plenty of others clearly loved it), for me as a social media professional, this kind of creative storytelling is the type of content that as a consumer I crave. The kind of content that cuts through the endless swathe of so-called inspirational quotes on white backgrounds that people carelessly pass off as creative and the millions of self-indulgent selfies that so many of us think that the world wants to see (yes, we’re all guilty of selfies, but I guarantee that you’ll be seeing a lot less of these on our Instagram account moving forward).

And as I advised all of my clients at the end of 2015, with the likes of Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, Periscope, Vine and more continuing to strive to tap into those valuable Google/YouTube cash money media dollars, video content is going to continue to be prioritised by platforms in the consumer mobile newsfeed and its imperative that even those in small business find a way to execute video as part of their monthly content calendar.

Many of us won’t have considered this, but every single time that you open up the Facebook App on your mobile, there are well over 1500 pieces of content that Facebook are trying to squeeze into your newsfeed and therefore optimising content for the Facebook Newsfeed algorithm and ensuring premium storytelling for the consumer experience is absolutely key.

Case in point. In late January, producer Mick Russell from Linchpin Studios posted this‘#Melbourne, #coffee & #graffiti’ creative video on their business Facebook Page. Less than two weeks later, the video has enjoyed well over 280K+ Video Views, 3.7K Shares, 1200 new Facebook fans and 400+ Comments from around the world. “But what about the Facebook Advertising Spend?” I hear you say… Well. $2 and 9 cents… yep, you heard it…$2.09 and that off only 200 original Facebook fans on their Facebook Page… This shit went viral! Imagine what it would be like with another cheeky $50 media spend behind it… or $100!

By capturing an audience-centric moment in time that so many Melbournites and tourists like you & I experience every single day, Linchpin Studios have tapped into our hearts and minds resulting in wonderful digital traffic for their business through a simple, but inspired piece of creative storytelling. It doesn’t have to cost tens of thousands of dollars. It just has to be well executed and mean something.

Creatives… throw your meme & inspirational template kits in the bin, stop slapping your brand’s logos and text lock-ups over everything immediately and start thinking about how you can start using platform functionality and amazing storytelling through video content to capture our imagination.

We’re ready and waiting!

Sunrise & Sunset – The perfect time to Recharge & Reset #SKYPORN

Sunrise and sunset are easily my favourite time of day. I’ve been shooting #skyporn since before #skyporn was invented.

There’s simply nothing quite like walking along a deserted beach as the sun rises to recharge, reset and put things into perspective. The same goes for sunset.

Back in my Dubai days when I was traveling the world serving chicken or beef as Emirates Airline cabin crew, the 3-bedroom bachelor pad I shared with 2 of my best mates had 4-5 balconies, most of which faced west.

I kid you not, every single day that I wasn’t jet-setting around the globe, getting hammered at the pub or at rugby training with the boys in 35+ degree heat, I’d be on my White Building balcony watching the sun go down. I lived in that Sheikh Zayed Road apartment (#Club203 for the regular party-goers :D) for 5 years and must have taken hundreds of photos with my old Nikon F60 SLR on that window to the world. Cheeky beers, tunes crankin’, chillin’ solo or with friends complete with peach, purple skies during the call to prayer with a mosque silhouette. Perfection.

I became addicted to those long moments of inspiration, so much so that I named a song after it  ‘Endorphins’ and a rather significant factor in selecting my new Melbourne apartment recently, was that it had a 10th floor west-facing balcony. Air balloons, birds in flight, aircraft coming in to land at Melbourne International Airport.. I’ve only been here 3 weeks now, but almost daily I soak up nature’s little slice of heaven with and without iPhone camera at the ready.

I don’t know who invented the #skyporn hashtag, but I can tell you the 1st time I heard it and you had me at sunset..
