Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! repeat offender and Sydney indie soul, R&B & hip hop artist & producerBilly Fox, joined me live in the studio last week to launch his brand new single ‘Shapes’.

We first met when I was music supervisor for Ballistyx Snowboard Show on Channel GO! back in 2010. Flash forward 7 years and Billy Fox- ‘Shapes’ is getting serious spins around the globe, plus he has just announced a series of exclusive Australian east coast tour dates including Oxford Art Factory – Gallery Bar (Sydney), Rare Finds -­ Black Bear Lodge (Brisbane), Moonshine Bar at Manly Food & Wine Festival and Penny Black (Melbourne).

I draw inspiration from my one-on-ones with Billy Fox every… single… time! (both on and off mic). Today we delve deeper into the meaning behind ‘Shapes’, a track created to reawaken the lost art of conversation, it highlights a culture that we’ve created for ourselves, where we force our individual opinions down each others’ throats and attack the person rather than entering into measured debates… there is a serious need for all of us to adopt an approach where we take a moment for introspection and to search within, before knee-jerk reaction opinions and seeking to change others’ to ours without consideration for where they’re coming from.

Aside from the D&Ms, we get serious about our music experiences with Billy Fox and I spitballing the iconic music of Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, being given Rage Against The Machine’s self-titled album for the very first time, the experience of producing tunes for Australian filmmaker and musician Macario De Souza AKA Kid Mac, making a positive impact on the lives of others and SO much more!

We all grow from adversity and something that I champion in my own life is the way Billy Fox lives his. In music, like life, “there is so much to get distracted by… especially when you’re creating, especially with music”, so music like every other facet of our lives at this time “it’s all about streamlining, simplifying”… and Billy Fox indeed is living up to this through his personal Mission Statement and stepping back from the stresses of over-stimulation and white noise, by keeping things simple… “If it feels good, then do it”.

Solocast! Who am I? 
 
I have lived in 5 different countries and 10 different cities. I have blonde hair, a ginger beard, have lived a life and careers of so many lifetimes… all focused on the pursuit of loving life and The Secret to Happiness… although I didn’t always necessarily recognise it at the time.
 
After dropping out of university and a Swinburne University BASc Biochemistry degree through lack of passion and zero desire to be stuck in a laboratory in 10-15 years time, I have served drinks and cleaned ashtrays back of house at Melbourne’s Crown Casino, spent 6.5 years jet-setting the globe with the rock star’s lifestyle without being the rock star as an Emirates Airline flight attendant, set a life up for myself as music industry professional, driving operations & logistics for music festivals/events around Australia such as Splendour In The Grass, event production and festival photography for triple j, created a music supervisor role for Ballistyx Snowboard Show on Channel GO! managed rock & roll bands and much, much more.
 
My life now, is so surreal. My main crust at this stage of 2017 is as a social media strategist and content producer. I work in an industry that didn’t exist 15 years ago guiding national and global brands on their social media strategy in the digital sphere, including the likes of Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate, Peroni Italian Beer, Philadelphia Cream Cheese, Kraft Peanut Butter, Bulmers Original Cider, Miller Genuine Draft, Cancer Council Australia, Salesforce (through Mahlab Content Agency) and many more.
 
And all of this from a guy with no degree who dropped out of university not once… but twice! The 1st was the BASc and the 2nd a Masters of Entrepreneurship & Innovation, which I left as I was spread too thin and didn’t wish to wait 4 years to start chasing new opportunities… I’m still not convinced that you can teach entrepreneurship, but that’s another story 😉
 
Not only am I now back working for myself making the same ca$h money in 2.5 days/week that I was making in 5 days/week only a ago, but I am also lecturing at Macleay College in Sydney, have brand and lifestyle that I have created for myself called Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet!, I am being paid for social media influencer work through the reach of my social media channels, I have a weekly show on Bondi Beach Radio called Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! that is has also been a podcast on iTunes for 2.5 years now too and I have SO much planned for 2017.
 
Now… absolutely NONE of this is designed as a boast. All of this shit is real. I did this myself through a shit-ton of hard work, mistakes, early mornings and the borne of the desire to love what I do and be happy. And I’m sharing this piece not as a “Yay, me”, but because I believe that we should be living and pursuing what we love for a living and I believe that it is a life that you can have too!
 
In this week’s show AKA Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! solocast, I share everything that you’ve ever wanted to know about scoring that dream job that you’ve always wanted (or the one that you simply never knew existed). 
 
I share with you The Secret to Happiness, because it’s just so simple… and I tell you what… I never knew just how close it was and at 40 I am truly the happiest that I’ve ever been… Yep, I found it!

Ever since my early 20s, I’ve based my life choices and career around pursuing what I love in life and Sounds Australia Export Music Producer, Glenn Dickie is a guy who epitomises this.
 
Glenn Dickie AKA Glenny G spent 12 years as a radio presenter at 3RRR in Melbourne and then another 12 at EMI Music Australia in A&R/Promotions/Marketing working with artists such as Lily Allen, Katy Perry, Sigur Ros, You Am I, signing acts such Miami Horror, Ricki-Lee, Oh Mercy and was part of a team that signed The Cat Empire, Airbourne, Alison Wonderland and hip hop acts 360 and PEZ. 
 
He now travels the world with Sounds Australia as Export Music Producer taking the very best of Australian music to all the world’s largest music conferences including SXSW, Canadian Music Week, The Great Escape (UK), Americana, Music Matters (Singapore), Reeperbahn (Germany), CMJ Music Marathon and many, many more.
 
Amongst hundreds of others, Courtney Barnett, Chet Faker, Flume and Vance Joy all played Sounds Australia showcases in their first year of export and benefitted from repeat Sounds Australia performance opportunities in the year following.
 

Anyway, my friendship with GG started back in 2011, when the sister of a friend of mine from my Emirates Airline days checked into the Bowery Ballroom in New York at an event called The Aussie BBQ, with a line-up featuring DZ Deathrays, Paul Dempsey, Bliss N Eso, Blue King Brown and a whole swag of the most amazing Australian musicians.

I was like… “Wow… what a line-up… Whats this all about??”
 
I immediately Googled The Aussie BBQ, got in touch with The Aussie BBQ organisers (Glenny G and Aussie journalist/music industry stalwart Mary Mihelakos) and next minute you know I am jetting over to Austin (Texas) in 2013 to shoot photography/produce social media at The Aussie BBQ and whole swag of other Sounds Australia events. I then returned to the USA for 3 months earlier this year, where I recorded a number of podcasts, shot photos of Michelle Obama’s keynote speech with Queen Latifah and Missy Elliot on #LetGirlsLearn, Vance Joy’s US tour at Verizon Theatre in Grand Prairie, Wolfmother’s SXSW packed house at Easy Tiger and much, much more (that’s actually the short version… seriously).
 
I’ve met so many wonderful people through GG and his amazing partner, Van Picken (Comes With Fries), so I was stoked to catch-up with him last week at APRA/AMCOS HQ in Ultimo, Sydney. They have both made an impact on my career & in my life. And I’m just one person in the Australian music industry… Imagine that at scale!

Christmas Eve 2014. Kickin’ it here on St Kilda Beach pier with this view. Amazing start to the day and pretty spectacular!

While I am exhausted and still winding down from 6 months of 60-80 hour weeks (between agency work and my own biz), I am at peace.

Agency life has been insane having gone from overseeing the social media for 2 global brands to 6 brands with more on the way in the new year.

In the 2nd half of 2014, my first love and passion project Hot & Delicious Group, has also taken several significant steps with the launch of my “Photographic Tales of an ex-Emirates flight attendant” photography travel series and the “Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet” podcast series, which captures 1-on-1 audio interviews with inspiring people and entrepreneurs across a range of industries that fuel the fire of my own inspiration, personal business ambitions and the desire to inspire up & coming dreamers who aspire to their own success.

I am quite excited for the year ahead and while I’m not a New Years resolution kind-of-guy, I already have a swag of plans for the ‘Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet’ project including ramping up the profile of podcast & guests, kicking back into my own music, holding a “Photographic Tales of an ex-Emirates flight attendant” photo exhibition, creating a new ‘Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet’ website to start tapping into other revenue streams and sounding out global business opportunities.

Now to the outsider and friends who know me a little, this probably sounds like the standard year of unwavering ambition, but in reality, despite being exhausted right now I am at peace and energized all at the same time.

I’m at peace because if there’s one area of self that I’ve developed this year it is this… My ambition for the future is only strengthened by soaking up & living each moment. And what is the one key thing that’s helped me achieve this? Meditation. I shit you not.

In my very first post for 2014, “2 days ago I woke up to a beach sunrise over the ocean, sand & the waves at my feet.. 2014.. I’m ready..”  the final paragraph finished as follows:

Living in the moment is what I want to see more of from myself this year and not a concept that’s new to me, but taking time out to reflect & enjoy is where we get fresh energy, a sense of calm and it’s in this headspace where the fresh ideas & magic flow.. 2014.. I’m ready..

Meditation started for me when I got to a point in my year and my life when exercise alone wasn’t enough to keep me fresh and clear-headed – I realized that despite living a wicked existence and working on many amazing projects over the past 20 years of my life, that I wasn’t happy, craved some quiet in my mind and inner peace in my heart.

Being time-poor and not a true-believer of meditation at the time, I began setting aside 10 minutes every morning after my daily workout and tried out free meditation app Smiling Mind, which was recommended to me by a friend of mine. This meant that the skeptic in me could trial meditation without giving up too much of my time.

After a period of meditating regularly using Smiling Mind, I began to get bored of just using the app all the time; in my life I crave variety and so I brought other styles of meditation in to combine with Smiling Mind so that I could mix it up and keep my meditation sessions fresh. I evolved to trying different forms of meditation including listening to a 10 minute track of waves washing gently upon a beach that I downloaded from iTunes, taking time out on my lunch-break to sit in the sunshine listening to relaxing songs I love and focusing on the music/lyrics whilst breathing steadily or quite simply even meditating in silence with my iPhone on timer.

Almost immediately I noticed the difference and over the coming weeks and months I found myself unplugging from music and podcasts whilst traveling to work or from place to place, varying my route to our South Melbourne office in search of visual inspiration and the peace of a few deep breaths whilst enjoying another Melbourne sunset. Come Christmas and I’ve spent the past 4 days pretty much hanging out by myself doing something new and different every day – chilling by the beach reading books, a long cafe breakfast and the morning paper while everyone else is at work, photography down by the water at St Kilda, lunchtime beers in the sunshine at Ponyfish Island, shopping down at the markets for fresh deli treats, summer fruits and veggies… so many simple everyday pleasures that make me happy.

Thence what started as daily 10 minute meditation sessions grew to me enjoying and being mindful of the peace and joy in everyday moments that can occur multiple times every single day. It’s even got to the stage where I’m conscious of when I haven’t had enough meditation or these moments and know exactly what I need to even myself out.

This sense of mindfulness and almost perpetual state of peace (with multiple daily sense-checks of course), has lead to one of my most productive years of late despite supposedly having less time to cram it in.

I can honestly say for the first time in my life that instead of spending my days wishing for my future successful self that we all envision and crave, that I am happy and thrive on the pure joy of the here & now, whilst still fuelled with my ambition for the future. And that’s made me a better, more efficient and more successful as a person, colleague, family member and friend.

I am truly excited for 2015 and have many goals that I wish to achieve including a serious increase in travel, personal business growth and a swag of others as stated above, but if I can keep on this path of mindfulness, appreciating and living everyday moments, whilst fuelling ambition for the future, I have no doubt this will be a very, very exciting year indeed 🙂
