Touchdown Texas!

It’s a sunny spring afternoon in Texas as me and my friends cruise into Austin for the world’s largest Music, Film and Interactive conference, South By South West (SXSW) and life is good!

First stop… The Radisson Hotel & Suites Austin Downtown.

From the minute that we walk into our warm King Suite room decked out with bright colours, a massive king-sized bed and picturesque sunset views of the Colorado River, we feel welcome.

Situated on the edge of downtown Austin just 5-7 minutes walk from Austin Convention Centre, the infamous music mecca that is 6th St and a vast array of restaurants and bars, the Radisson is the perfect escape and location for those who are in Austin for SXSW or on business and want to be close to downtown, but not feel like they’re trapped in the concrete jungle.

Whether you desire a morning run along the beautiful Colorado River, a long breakfast at their premium in-house restaurant, Dine, or soaking up the afternoon Texas sunshine with the most delicious, classic margaritas by their glorious pool, I found the Radisson Austin and surrounding areas to be the perfect escape from the exciting, madness that is Austin during SXSW.

As an ex Emirates flight attendant, I’ve stayed in premium hotels the world over and I can honestly say that I look forward to being welcomed back to the Radisson Hotel & Suites Austin Downtown in the not-too-distant future.

Such an amazing week!

Key Hotel Highlights:
  • King Suite Room – Beautiful sweeping views of the Colorado River, super comfortable, firm king-sized bed and spacious lounge area with queen-sized sofa bed.
  • Proximity to Austin Convention Centre, iconic music strip 6th Street and Downtown Austin.
  • Cocktail Bar – Views/Food/Drink:
    • Sunrise & sunset views of Colorado River.
    • Try the salmon Ceviche – it’s absolutely divine!
    • Classic Margaritas with fresh lime and salted rim.
    • The extensive local craft beer & wine selection. My personal favourite is the 512 IPA brewed locally in Austin, Texas.
  • Fitness & Leisure:
    • Picturesque morning runs along the Colorado River.
    • Soaking up the afternoon rays by the beautiful pool.
    • Kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding hire nearby.

Unibet evolve digital content offering to reach consumers.

Unibet

Challenging the status quo and evolving with the market – Sponsored Post.

Working in the digital space I’m always on the look-out for content or elements of digital and video content that inspire me in my own projects and that of the clients I’m working with.

One of my eternal frustrations as a digital media specialist is how slow brands are to adopt an audience-centric approach to content and technological trends to meet their business and brand objectives.

For example, as any digitial professional worth his weight in gold will tell you, video content is the way forward to 2016 and beyond. Think about it. Over recent years Facebook have ramped up their platform advertising and prioritized video content in the Facebook algorithm* as a clear assault and attempt to tap into YouTube/Google’s valuable media dollars.

Twitter has now added video to their ad product offering, the invention of Snapchat, Periscope, Meerkat, Vine… it’s all video-focused.

And that’s why you see betting agencies like Unibet and others looking to capitalize on video as an advertising format designed to reach and engage their target audience – play where their consumers are most likely be served content and in a tone they’re like to consume it. Yes, it seems to me that betting agencies are also amongst the most forward-thinking in content design in that they appreciate that in markets like Australia, that one of the best ways to engage with audience members is to play to the Australian sense of humour.

Whether you gamble or not, if you work in the digital space or you have a brand that does, then take note. Video has been (for well over a year now) and the foreseeable future, the way forward. It doesn’t have to cost the earth with some business specializing in digital videos and digital media professionals like myself are striving to make it part of client’s monthly content calendar in order to reach the masses. Not using video content as part of your digital marketing strategy these days is quite simply a gamble! 😉

Who are you using to create your video content in 2016?

Tinder App partners with Rock The Vote to drive USA youth market to the polls.

Posted on

Welcome to the USA!

Where Tinder is used to drive the young people of America to the polls!

After a 2 week stint in Texas hanging out with friends in Dallas, Houston and soaking up the wonderment that is SXSW, I have touched down in Los Angeles.

Kickin’ it in Burbank for the week, I opened up the Tinder App the other day (for research purposes I swear! 😉) to be quite surprised at what I found; not so much the diversity of people on the app compared to Australia or the volume of stunningly beautiful, single women in the greater Los Angeles area, but that Tinder have partnered with the largest nonprofit and nonpartisan organization in the United States, Rock The Vote, to drive the youth vote for this year’s presidential elections.

Tinder have launched the ‘Swipe the Vote’ video card and utilized the app’s world-renown Swipe Right/Swipe Left method, to deliver a user-friendly experience to educate, influence and drive America’s youth to the polls.

Once the Tinder app user has swiped through ten of the USA’s hottest issues, they are matched with the presidential candidate who best matches their views:

  1. Increase funding for education?
  2. Keep Same-Sex Marriage Legal?
  3. Protect a Woman’s Right to Choose.
  4. Drill for oil and gas in the USA?
  5. Increase the minimum wage?
  6. Abolish the death penalty?
  7. Repeal “ObamaCare?
  8. Legalize Marijuana?
  9. Decrease military spending?
  10. Stricter laws for online piracy?

Despite Rock The Vote being a non-partisan organization, I can definitely see this campaign being of significant benefit to the man I matched with myself. Bernie Sanders!

A solid mechanic and project designed to target the American youth market in an environment that they feel comfortable in, I give Tinder/Rock The Vote 10/10 for delivery.

Makes me wonder if the Australian market will see an similar execution in the not-too-distant future!

Social Media Recruitment – Trial by Snapchat – How are you challenging the status quo?

Posted on Updated on

Trial by Snapchat - social media job applications with a difference.
Trial by Snapchat – social media job applications with a difference.

I have built a digital career for myself that didn’t even exist 15 years ago, in a social media industry that is constantly evolving at the speed of sound and requires a finger on the pulse at all times or you get left behind… and I love it!

Unfortunately one of the downsides, eternal frustrations and key elements that comes with the territory of such a career, is the need to be constantly holding the hands of clients and customers (both internal and external), who believe that they understand how to utilize social media for their brand just because they have a personal Facebook account or know how to post a few blurry smartphone images or so-called “inspirational” quotes to Instagram.

So what can we do as recruiters to find people who are the best recruits for social media roles and help ease this pain?

My advice to social media recruiters and even myself a week ago, would be to challenge the status quo of how you are recruiting social media team members for your agencies and small businesses. If you are still receiving the same tired old resumes for social media account management, creative or community management roles, then chances are that you yourself are doing it wrong. A month ago, I threw out a pile of resumes collecting dust from social media industry “professionals”, who’ve followed the same old skool Word doc resume format with zero visuals and little illustration of the personality that I believe is a non-negotiable to be a success in the social media industry. They didn’t stand out in my Newsfeed.

So how can I challenge the status quo?

Check out this ThinkTank Social job advertisement that popped up in my Facebook Newsfeed just a few days ago. I don’t know much about the role myself, but it caught my attention and to me it could indicate that they chose Trial by Snapchat as a way of finding the type of person and personality that they’re after for the position and agency culture. It could quite well be quite a niche role and I know plenty of great account managers who aren’t suited for social media at all.

Looking at it from a birds-eye view I like their choice of application because they’re obviously not only illustrating the personality behind their agency, but challenging the status quo of job advertisements. It stood out in my newsfeed and made me think about/reassess how I have advertised roles in the past and how I will do so in the future.

I’m not saying that Trial by Snapchat is the right solution for your next job advertisement, but I like that Thinktank Social having a go!

Side note:

I’m also consistently surprised at how few candidates include links to their own social pages or @-handles on resumes or digital portfolios (or even a website central to a personal digital ecosystem where recruiters can be directed to their various social media channels). Whether you like it or not, the best recruiters, social media managers and directors will search for and find a recruit’s personal social media channels in an effort to determine the type of person they’re dealing with (you can tell a lot about the psychology of an person by the style of copy they write and how they interact with others online), whether said recruit actually understands how to optimize content each individual social media platform and to get a small taste of the type of creative that they can expect from that person. So always be mindful of how you’re representing yourself on open channels, consider the perception of the type of content you’re posting and get those URLs in on your resumes, peeps.

Hot & Delicious fresh out of the blocks with Social Media strategy & content for your brand.

Social Media Strategy, Content Production, Monthly Social Media Calendars, Community Management & Reporting

Yes, after 2.5 years as Social Media Lead for SapientNitro in Australia driving social media for Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate, Peroni Italian Beer, Bulmers Original Cider, Oreo, Philly Cream Cheese, Kraft Peanut Butter & more, I’ve decided to jump back into the freelance world.

In my time at SapientNitro, we’ve changed the way our clients play in the social media space with innovative thinking, exciting brand building and social media-led campaigns

Some of the highlights include:

I am both proud and excited to have helped transform the way not only our clients do business, but the way SapientNitro operates in the social media space.

When I first joined SapientNitro in July 2013, the Australian arm of the business had never focussed on social media clients before. During my time at the agency, with the support of our global social teams in Miami, New York, Chicago, Atlanta and Toronto, we transformed the Melbourne office into a digitally-focussed business, creating internal ways of working, crisis management & escalation procedures, content production and community management processes, reporting templates, social listening and analytics tool assessment/review, pitch document creation for successful pitches and more.

SapientNitro is now a thriving full-service agency providing clients with a range of specialist social media services including social media strategy, monthly calendar content creation – social media copywriting, photography and video production, monthly reporting and community management (moderation, crisis management and escalation).

But now, it’s my time… I want to take the learnings I brought to SapientNitro and have been adopted by our clients, as well as those key learnings they haven’t been able to adopt, to further build my own brand, Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet, and that of my clients, who crave a forward-thinking digital brand of their own. I want to partner with agencies, brands and clients to create audience-centric content that’s built for the user experience and drives the brand awareness/Reach that ultimately drive foot traffic/sales for their respective businesses.

And that now starts with you…

If you, your agency, your business, your brand or your client are looking to transform the way you approach social media then your journey starts now.
