Nick Bracks (underBRACKS biz founder & entrepreneur) – Podcast Interview

Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast series
Born in country-Victoria, Australian businessman, TV celebrity, model, aspiring actor, Headspace brand ambassador and underBRACKS founder, Nick Bracks is quite clearly never bored.
Discovered by American Crew in 2009, Nick Bracks has a modelling portfolio that includes Australian retail giants Myer, David Jones and GQ magazine. He’s a former restaurant/cafe owner, has been on Dancing with the Stars in front of millions of people, launched underwear label underBRACKS in 2013 and more recently co-founded superfood supplement, Activated Nutrients.
Drawing from personal experience in his youth with depression and anxiety, Nick has worked with wonderful organisations such as Headspace, Beyond Blue, En Masse and Movember. During today’s chat we share our personal experiences struggling with depression at a young age, finding our focus in our early twenties to pull through and the hunger of wanting to love yourself and achieve in life.
Now regular subscribers to the podcast will know that I’ve had many different career permutations in my short lifetime – Crown Casino bar guy, Emirates Airline international flight attendant, running music festivals & events around Australia, TV show music supervisor, photographer, biochemistry back in the day and now along with this podcast, I’m guiding social media for a range of international brands including Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate, Peroni Nastro Azzurro Italian beer, Bulmers Original cider, Philly Cream Cheese, Kraft Nuts Spreads and many more. One of the key lessons that Nick and I discuss and have both learned is to not be afraid to have a go…
“There’s nothing to fear, but fear itself” is never more true than in Nick’s case – we chat about the motivations of delving into different career opportunities, testing the waters of career paths that you think you might like and how it gets you closer to knowing who you are/what you want to do in life… oh and Nick Bracks shares with us the key to marketing yourself as your own brand. Very, very cool.
Oh yes, I’ve got three words for you. “Inspiring” and “Fingers pies.”

Global sports digital marketer & Sports Geek, Sean Callanan rocking the planet.

Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast series
Interview #28 Sean Callanan (Sports Geek – global digital sports marketer & podcaster).
Ladies & Gentleman welcome to the Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast. My name’s Dan Wilkinson and today we sit-down on the couch with Australian digital sports marketer and podcaster, Sean Callanan, who started his journey back in the day as a developer/coder, slung in out in the trenches of community radio and today works with sporting organizations around Australia and the world including clients in the AFL, NRL, cricket and more, advising them what to do with their brand in the digital space.
For our podcast lovers, Sean’s two podcasts, Sports Geek and the Beers, Blokes and Business podcast cover some super interesting subject matter and have recently just ticked over 200,000 downloads.
The Sports Geek podcast features interviews with sports business professionals from English Premier League, NBA, NHL, Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, AFL, NRL and NCAA and enjoys listenership in over 75 countries while the Beers, Blokes & Business podcast are regular catch-ups with Sean and his contacts across various industries, where they chat about the challenges of their businesses and how they work through them (over a few cheeky beers of course).
I loved catching up with Sean Callanan today, as it’s not that often that I get to engage with a fellow digital marketer and share our mutual learnings in the roles we play for our clients. Sean shares lots of little gems, including 3 pieces of advice he would give anyone who wants to start marketing their brand in the digital space – no matter whether they be sports teams, individuals, large brands, small business or whatever.
We cover Sean Callanan’s experiences of a lifetime including living in Tennessee as a kid, utilizing the power of Twitter to connect with people that ends up with him sitting in a corporate box shooting the shit with high-powered executives at LA Dodgers – Dodger Stadium, interviewing the likes of Mark Cuban (Audionet founder, Dallas Mavericks owner), Richard Clarke (Arsenal), English cricketer Mike Gatting and that Ball of the Century and the unwavering tenacity that culminates with you meeting and working with people beyond your wildest dreams

Johann Ponniah from I OH YOU. Bringing the party back to the people!

Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast series
Interview #27 – Johann Ponniah (I OH YOU! – brand, music company record label – founder & director).
Howdy howdy howdy… today we sit-down on the couch with Johann Ponniah, one of the founders & director of the love child that is I OH YOU!, an Australian music company, brand and independent record label born of 4 guys in the city of Melbourne, that’s becoming bigger than what they could ever have imagined.
For the uninitiated, the I OH YOU crew launched in 2009 when the then four teenage housemates received a final notice from their gas company for a bill they couldn’t afford to pay off. In a desperate last ditch effort to raise the funds, Johann and his mates threw a house party with live music acts and with the 200 people that attended (including the local police force), the housemates raised enough cash to pay all their bills for the next quarter.
Now I’ve been working in and around the Australian music industry for about 9 years now and I’ve met many many wonderful people, whom, if you haven’t worked in the music scene, invariably aren’t super well paid, driven by their pure passion for music and hunger to make a difference in the scene or at least make their mark.
Johann is a guy who through sheer determination and a SHITLOAD of hard work has built a career within the music industry and been instrumental in working with amazing artists of the likes of DZ Deathrays, Violent Soho, DMAs and more, to take their respective careers to a whole new level, not only in Australia, but on a global scale.
Despite having already achieved a whole swag of success in Australia, Johann remains refreshingly humble and focused on the future – ever-hungry for whatever’s next on his list of goals to tick-off for I OH YOU as a business and the artists that they work with.
We chat about his mentors in music and his family, his Sri Lankan background, a childhood spent growing-up in Campbelltown Sydney and the life lessons he learned after moving to Melbourne just 3 days after finishing high school.
Music industry accolades, successful international touring artists & putting the pieces together to build their business globally… Johann and the guys from I OH YOU are hungry and kicking massive goals.
So humble and many, fascinating tales to share for those just beginning their foray into the Australian or international music scene, whether you be artist, promotor, budding indie label founder or manager.
I hope you love this chat as much as I did.
Enjoy!

Hugh Stephens – Australian digital/tech pioneer & ScheduGram founder.
ScheduGram founder & digital/tech pioneer, Hugh Stephens, drops by Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet.
Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast series
Interview #25 – Hugh Stephens (ScheduGram founder & digital/tech pioneer).
Today’s podcast is for the digital, social media and tech geeks out there, particularly those of you who work in social media or who have start-ups that you’re looking to take out to the global market.
Hugh Stephens is the founder and creator of ScheduGram, one of many digital prospects under his Dialogue Group business umbrella.
ScheduGram is a digital tool that many of us who work in the social media industry with FMCGs, travel industry businesses, in the media, fashion brands, bloggers and more, utilize to schedule bulk images for brand monthly content calendars on Instagram, at the key times of day/week when fans and consumers are online and interacting. A massive time-saver as a business and a way that an “always on” business can have content going live at all times of the day, week and on weekends without having to post manually.
This podcast is a little different from others that I’ve recorded thus far, as one of the things I’d love to see more of from the Australia government is support for the proliferation of up & coming digital/tech innovators & pioneers, so I’m keen to support and celebrate those who are tenacious and brave enough to give it a go. Hugh Stephens is one of those.
Today we discuss the challenges of setting up business in the United States as an alien, self-development and different styles of learning – reading vs hands-on experience, building a start-up from scratch in Australia to a business with global customers across multiple languages in North America, South America and Europe and just how damn hard it is to find quality content that’s worth connecting with on the internet these days.
Hugh grew-up in Sydney, lived in Denver Colorado as a child and like many of us treading our own paths, actually started out studying medicine then stepped sideways into a career that he knew that he was made for, that could be his passion.
His advice to you? “Read, read broadly and read often”
Enjoy!

YGAP CEO & social entrepreneur Elliot Costello – Driving Innovation through Social Change.
Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast series
Interview #23 – Elliot Costello.
Annnnd I am flying!!!! Just walked out of Feast of Merit in Richmond (Australia) and having one of those moments where it all makes sense… I’ve just punched out a podcast with Australian social entrepreneur, ygap co-founder & CEO, Elliot Costello… wow.. that is the whole reason I do what I do with the Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast.
I came across ygap a 3-4 years when one of my friends introduced me to a gentleman by the name of Alby Tomassi, one of ygap’s founding members, who was looking to bring social media into his business and Hot & Delicious Group ending up driving the social media for a wonderful Melbourne pizzeria and Italian restaurant in St Kilda with the most delicious wood-fire pizzas called The Banff.
I had a wonderful time running The Banff’s social (you can read an article I wrote about it & see a few photos I shot on Broadsheet) and even though I haven’t seen Alby for a while, when I started this podcast I knew I wanted to reach out to him and tell the story of ygap.
Now, for those of you who haven’t heard of ygap before, ygap are an incubator for social change. They are a not-for-profit enterprise focused on locally driven development and their vision is to empower communities disadvantaged by poverty to be self-sustainable – believing that the best ways to answer poverty is by backing and supporting the local people. The ygap program finds and enables impact entrepreneurs in developing countries like Kenya, South Africa, Ghana, Malawi, Rwanda and India, then provides them with accelerator training, connects them with a range of networks and financially supports them to grow and scale the individual’s initiative. It’s all about finding those early stage entrepreneurs -people with big dreams lacking resource, then working with them to bring their concepts to life and empowering them take those ideas to scale. Such a wonderful approach!
The social enterprise initiatives that fund the ygap program and that they pride themselves on, are innovative projects like the 5 cent campaign, Feast of Merit and The Polished Man.
5 cent campaign is a campaign that runs across the month of May – Did you know there are currently $150m in 5coins in Australia that in many real life situations are effectively a useless denomination of currency – parking machines won’t accept them, vending machines won’t accept them, our public transport system ticketing machines won’t accept them… so ygap have been working to put 5 cent coins to good use. Every May they work with a range of partners and ygap ambassadors to raise awareness and encourage Australians to collect their 5 cent coins to help make an impact through social change. So far ygap and the Australian population have collected $7.9m in 5 cent pieces in a few short years, which is mind-blowing and the best part about the campaign [at least until 5 cent pieces become obsolete and we have to switch to a 10 cent campaign (my words not El’s) ] is that it’s the gift that keeps on giving, because every year the coins are set free into circulation again allowing us to begin again every year.
Apart from 5 cent campaign, Elliot and I chat about Feast of Merit, ygap’s restaurant and cafe that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and is a wholly owned subsidiary of ygap that invests every single dollar of profit back into social enterprise. We recorded today’s interview upstairs in ygap’s offices and so I had to walk through the Feast of Merit before and after the interviews and wow! What a scene! I’ve put some photos up on the blog as you can see and what a fantastic spot! The decor, menu and vibe are just sublime! Definitely heading back over the next few weeks and by the time I left at 6pm, Feast of Merit was already chockablock with the Thursday dinner crowd.
Now by the time this podcast is live, I believe we’re also going to be the first to announce (if the last few days have gone according to plan for Elliot Costello) the launch of Social Hub, a community driven project created by ygap where not-for-profits and social entrepreneurs can gather, work and utilise the benefits of Social Market Place, a physical space where social entrepreneurs can trial their products on a short-term and rotating basis in Melbourne. One of the toughest things when starting a small business is pulling together funds to survive and being able to surround yourself with people who are in the same path, but a few steps ahead who can provide support, advise and inspiration to keep pushing, so this is a wonderful initiative and in fact, the first of it’s type in Melbourne.
So what started as a volunteer-based organization 7 years ago, ygap has grown from Elliot as it’s first employee 2 years ago to over 40 employees today, so because of it’s scale now, ygap not only drives amazing projects around the world and is a rich source of inspiration as a catalyst for social change globally, but provides young Australians with jobs and guess what… there are more Australian initiatives brewing. So multi-faceted!
And if you want real stories, we also chat about one of their success stories, Lebo, an inspiring lady in north western South Africa who wanted to start a shelter for abused women in a province where 70% of women, yes 70% of women experience domestic violence. As a result of ygap’s spark accelerator program and her own drive and determination, Lebo now works with over 12,000 women in her province with a range of social enterprise businesses. All by empowering someone with a burning desire for change. Just wonderful!
Anyway, let’s jump into the podcast… some fascinating stories and inspiring insight into a young Australian Elliot Costello who has made it his life’s work to make a positive impact on the lives of others and inspire us all to want to be more, to do more…
Enjoy!

Bec Laughton – Little lion lungs & top secret global music deal.

Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast series
Little bit pumped for today’s podcast as I’m catching up with one of the most lovely, energising and positive humans I know, Australian indie soul songstress, Bec Laughton.
Now I met Bec about 2 years ago at the world’s largest music conference at SXSW in Austin, Texas and first came across her live tunes when I was shooting photos and providing social media for a series of international music showcases called The Aussie BBQ for Sounds Australia at the conference. For those of you who are musicians with a burning desire for success, Sounds Australia are an Australian organization tasked by the Australian and Federal governments to export Australian music to global markets.
Anyway, when Bec hit the stage at the first official event I was attending and I heard her voice for the first time I was like… WOW! Who the fuck is that? This little pocket rocket’s got some pipes!!! Think old school funk, r&b, soul.. think Eryka Badu think Lauren Hill.. seriously check this shit out…
I kept bumping into Bec at showcases all over Austin and we became buddies on that tour, staying in touch and I was just chuffed to have her chillin’ like a villain on a beanbag at my castle in the sky recently, chatting about her life so far and the next steps in her exciting career.
In today’s podcast we chit chat about her time in New York working with Grammy Award-winning producer Michael League and Snarky Puppy, going off the grid for 6 months as part of massive global management deal that she’s recently signed (currently living in an undisclosed international location recording a brand new album with some of the music industry’s top peeps.. VERY exciting!), being a female drummer with the most amazing voice (my words not hers), writing music for yourself from the heart and the balance of living in the moment whilst maintaining the tireless tenacity for the future.
And when you hear her this little lion open up her lungs and sing for the very first time you’ll be like.. what the fuck… where did that come from? Ah-mazing! And maaaaan, does she just have the most magical smile that lights up a room.
Seriously.. once you’ve had a listen to this podcast come check out her jams that I’ve loaded up onto the Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet blog…

Daniel Flynn (Thank You Group) – Building a social enterprise empire from scratch.

Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast series
Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet is a weekly podcast interviewing inspiring individuals and successful entrepreneurs from around the planet across a range of industries (incl. music, film/tv, fashion, travel, comedy and more) about what makes them tick as people and drives their hunger for success.
Today we catch-up with Thank You Group founder and social entrepreneur, Daniel Flynn.
Thankyou Group is a social enterprise that exists for the sole purpose of funding water, food and health and hygiene projects in the developing world through a range of products.
And man this chat… During the podcast today we chat about Daniel’s journey from starting his first business from scratch with the launch of a product called Thank You Water in 2008, making shit up as you go, flying by the seat of your pants and growing the business exponentially to where it is now with products stocked in over 4,000 outlets including 7-11, Woolworths and a range of other national supermarkets.
We also discuss creating partnerships in 2nd and 3rd world countries, pitching for start-up funds, unique-tracking codes on every single Thank You Group product sold so that people can see where the money goes, family members who are your business inspiration and the people who call themselves entrepreneurs – personally I think it’s a bullshit title and the majority of people who use it are pretenders. WAY too narcissistic and should never be on a LinkedIn Profile or business card.
When you’re wired the way people like us are wired there’s no option in your mind except to strive for success, it can actually be quite a lonely path at times ‘cause many people around you just don’t get it or understand that there is no choice, so it’s important to surround yourself with like-minded people, even if they’re in working different industries or on different paths as they’re the ones who you can turn to when things are toughest or give you a fresh burst of energy when you need it most. I felt invigorated chatting to Daniel ‘cause even though we’d not really hung out in person before, he just gets it.
Super, super chat and hope you enjoy it as much as I did 🙂

Today’s podcast is with model, fitness ambassador & presenter, Allira Cohrs.
I came across Allira’s work as a beautiful, sexy & captivating model through Instagram and we connected through Twitter where I swiftly discovered that she was so much more than a pretty face and amazing body, but in fact an extremely hard-working, lovely, inspiring and highly motivated individual. We became buddies a few years back and when I was road-tripping up the east coast of Australia last week, I decided I wanted to finally catch-up for a chat and dropped her a line.
I’m pretty excited to share this chat and the photos on the blog page as we recorded this podcast at Skypoint Observation Deck on the Gold Coast in Australia. We were located on the 78th floor of Queensland’s iconic Q1 building, which is one of the tallest residential buildings in the world and has spectacular 360 degree views of the Australian coastline, surf, hinterland and more. Make sure you check out the pics on the blog & thank you so much to the venue manager Guy and all the people at SkyPoint that made this happen. It seriously blew my mind to be recording in such an amazing location and it’s given me inspiration for future podcasts and another wicked little idea that’s been brewing for a while now… (but I’ll have to keep that under wraps for now).
I’m still tingling a little as when we were trying to decide where to record the podcast, I was like… well I don’t want to record at Allira’s house ‘cause that’s a little forward as we hadn’t met in person yet and I didn’t want to record at my mate’s house I was staying at, so I got thinking… maybe we can do it at a cafe near the beach… that’d be nice… and then no… hang on buddy… if you could record it anywhere at all on the Gold Coast, where would it be… bingo… light bulb goes off in my head. SkyPoint… and then I remembered I actually have a friend connected with SkyPoint Observation Deck and so I gave them a call… a few hours later it was all sorted… man, it blew my mind and it’s actually the perfect example of what I’m trying to get across with these podcasts.
If you set your mind to something, you can achieve almost anything. And if you want to do something, sometimes all you have to do is pick up the phone and ask.. or find out who that person is that you need to talk to and drop them an email. Not everyone you ask will say yes, but keep knocking on that door and eventually someone will say yes. We also all need to remember too that a no now’s not a no later… I can’t tell you the amount of no’s I’ve had and then weeks/months/years later the person I’ve approached has come across my work or my profile through a shared contact and all of a sudden I’m working on a wicked project.. That’s how it works. Not magic. Not luck, just a tenacious, hunger and determination. Just do it.
Anyway, in this podcast Allira and I chat about her travels to war zones working with the Australian Defence Force, performing in Afghanistan hitting the deck while rockets are going off around you, BlackHawk helicopter pilot antics, religion, the truth about how much hard work actually goes into being a model and being your own brand, how to go about choosing your role models and much much more.
Such a sick chat and we could have talked for hours… sign of a good podcast!!!! And how’s this view!!!!
