Kerri Glasscock is an absolute baller!! Growing up as a kid in a small country town NSW, Kerri craved a career in performance arts and moved to Newtown as a teenager, Sydney’s hub of arts, music and culture, so that she could attend the Newtown High School of the Performing Arts amongst her peers. And she flourished!

Flash forward to 2019 and Kerri Glasscock has been the festival director and CEO of the Sydney Fringe Festival for 8 years, has run artist-run Venue 505 in Surry Hills since 2004, a director of City Recital Hall and is the co-chair of the City of Sydney’s new Nightlife and Creative Sector Advisory Panel – a panel that was set up in 2018 to provide advice about supporting a thriving, diverse and safe nightlife in Sydney. The key to that success has been a clear understanding of client objectives, knowing where their target markets are making purchase decisions, researching competitors, exploring the type of content consumers that connect with digitally, developing an understanding of the ever evolving technical capabilities of the major digital platforms, the platform strengths, data analytics and creating bespoke strategies with ad solutions that are most likely to drive the desired results for a client and their brand.

This success and knowledge has also been provided by the opportunity to work with Australian and global brands with 1M+ audiences and massive paid media budgets. THAT’s how you get to see what works at scale!

But there-in lies the challenge. All businesses and organisations want their digital media to be an immediate success and the vast majority quite simply can’t afford (or can’t justify) the retainers that the top creative/digital agencies want to charge to run their digital media strategy, content production and reporting. And quite frankly, many of these agencies still aren’t doing the job required at great expense!

That’s why I’ve been changing the market with our business model. Senior Social Media Strategist – Gun For Hire.

Wow, what an experience!

I am still coming down from the excitement that has been Telstra Vantage™ 2018 and yet I’m hitting the ground running on the hunt for my next contract/freelance project or full-time Head of Social Media/Social Media Director/Social Media Strategist role, preferably in Sydney or US-based, but do have clients in other Australian capital cities.

Across the past 3.5 months, I have been Digital & Social Media Lead for Telstra Enterprise on Telstra Vantage, the annual invite-only event 6,000+ customers on smart business tech and innovation held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. And what an experience it was!

Apart from the successful launch of the Telstra Vantage™ TV livestream/on demand service and watching our amazing onsite Enterprise Social Media team bring Telstra Vantage™ to life in digital, key event highlights from the 5 stages at event include the closing keynote from Thai cave rescue heroes, Dr Richard Harris and Craig Challen, as they related to our audience their experiences of the Tham Luang Cave rescue – dubbed “Mission Impossible” – in Thailand earlier this year, Neha Narula’s keynote on blockchain, bitcoin and cryptocurrency, the Business of Sport panel featuring Foxtel CEO Patrick Delany and AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan on how technology is influencing how we promote, broadcast, sponsor and watch sport now and in the future, the Women in Tech “Unstoppable force meets irresistible objective – empowering women in technology” panel and a plethora of the latest Telstra tech including 5G demonstrations, the evolution of drones and any number of partner activations from the likes of Cisco, Samsung, Microsoft and more.

As my role wraps up on the Telstra Vantage project for 2018, I’m excited about my next steps in the industry in Australia/abroad and effective immediately I am on the hunt for either a client-side or an agency-side role/contract and the 3 key elements that I’m seeking in new business opportunities are as follows:

  1. Digitally Progressive – you are a digitally progressive business/brand or you want to be (if you’re not there yet then, you want to pay someone who is and can bring you up to speed).

Ever wanted to work in the USA like me? 

Last year I was in Los Angeles and the USA under the ESTA Visa Waiver Program for just under 3 months to explore what Los Angeles was like as a place to be based for work – to see if there was another side to the City of Angels away from the plastic fantastic and then based on these experiences, decide if I wished to pursue the O1 Visa as an option to work in the USA (also known as the O1 Alien of Extraordinary Ability Visa – yes, that’s what it’s called).  

Now any Australian who has spent time in Los Angeles with a Green Card, E3 or O1 Visa will tell you that they have the best US Immigration Lawyer in the USA ever! And chances are that they might, but it’s not all cut & dried and there are some key things that you need to know before you go splash the cash on securing a lawyer in the hopes of chasing the American dream.

And the good news is that there is SO much more to L.A. than the glitter, gloss and your name up in lights; countless hiking trails in the greater Los Angeles area, live comedy every night of the week, amazing Mexican food, a live music scene that makes your mouth water and I fell in love with the Sports Bar culture too. I’ve found the American people as a whole, from my previous holidays there and on this trip, to be so warm and welcoming, polite and giving. Plus if you need it, there’s this a super supportive community of expat Australians in both Los Angeles and New York City (should you need it) and a whole new country to explore. Loves it!
