Ever since my early 20s, I’ve based my life choices and career around pursuing what I love in life and Sounds Australia Export Music Producer, Glenn Dickie is a guy who epitomises this.
Glenn Dickie AKA Glenny G spent 12 years as a radio presenter at 3RRR in Melbourne and then another 12 at EMI Music Australia in A&R/Promotions/Marketing working with artists such as Lily Allen, Katy Perry, Sigur Ros, You Am I, signing acts such Miami Horror, Ricki-Lee, Oh Mercy and was part of a team that signed The Cat Empire, Airbourne, Alison Wonderland and hip hop acts 360 and PEZ.
He now travels the world with Sounds Australia as Export Music Producer taking the very best of Australian music to all the world’s largest music conferences including SXSW, Canadian Music Week, The Great Escape (UK), Americana, Music Matters (Singapore), Reeperbahn (Germany), CMJ Music Marathon and many, many more.
Amongst hundreds of others, Courtney Barnett, Chet Faker, Flume and Vance Joy all played Sounds Australia showcases in their first year of export and benefitted from repeat Sounds Australia performance opportunities in the year following.

Anyway, my friendship with GG started back in 2011, when the sister of a friend of mine from my Emirates Airline days checked into the Bowery Ballroom in New York at an event called The Aussie BBQ, with a line-up featuring DZ Deathrays, Paul Dempsey, Bliss N Eso, Blue King Brown and a whole swag of the most amazing Australian musicians.

I was like… “Wow… what a line-up… Whats this all about??”
I immediately Googled The Aussie BBQ, got in touch with The Aussie BBQ organisers (Glenny G and Aussie journalist/music industry stalwart Mary Mihelakos) and next minute you know I am jetting over to Austin (Texas) in 2013 to shoot photography/produce social media at The Aussie BBQ and whole swag of other Sounds Australia events. I then returned to the USA for 3 months earlier this year, where I recorded a number of podcasts, shot photos of Michelle Obama’s keynote speech with Queen Latifah and Missy Elliot on #LetGirlsLearn, Vance Joy’s US tour at Verizon Theatre in Grand Prairie, Wolfmother’s SXSW packed house at Easy Tiger and much, much more (that’s actually the short version… seriously).
I’ve met so many wonderful people through GG and his amazing partner, Van Picken (Comes With Fries), so I was stoked to catch-up with him last week at APRA/AMCOS HQ in Ultimo, Sydney. They have both made an impact on my career & in my life. And I’m just one person in the Australian music industry… Imagine that at scale!
Super chats, brother & thanks for making the time. I hope that all you guys listening enjoy this podcast is much as I did. Awesome hangs!
Let’s get into it!

Interview #12 – Blue King Brown

Good morning world!
Today we’re in for a bit of a treat. A few short weeks back I was blessed to catch-up with Carlo Santone and Nattali Rize of Blue King Brown before they jetted back off to Jamaica for another 6 months. Living the dream!
I’ve shot Blue King Brown live and seen them at a bunch of festivals/shows around Australia and we’ve got a few mutual friends, so it was kind of cool finally having them on my couch to chat about the inspiration of living and recording in Kingston, Jamaica (yes, this is their second time now), shitty jobs like delivering pamphlets back in the day to keep the cash coming in, to inspiration and impact of the likes of Miles Davis, Mama Kin and Sydney Peace Prize winner Noam Chomsky on their lives, doing their bit to raise awareness for what’s going down in West Papua, their beginnings and how the stunning, mind-blowing beach town of Byron Bay has changed over the years.
We get the down low on Blue King Brown’s kick-ass new album “Born Free” (stream in full on below) and Nattali Rize’s new solo career a brand new project that these 2 lovely people are now pursuing side-by-side along with the Blue King Brown project – recording with Julian Marley and a swag of other talented Jamaican musicians.
Let’s get down to it.

Blue King Brown back with fresh new jams & hitting the road! #BornFree

Wow… lovin’ this wicked new reggae jam by the crew at Blue King Brown… Can’t wait to catch-up with Carlo and Nat tomorrow night for the ‘Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet’ podcast!

Fresh from a couple of concerts with UB40 last weekend, this week sees Nattali Rize performing several rare acoustic shows in both Melbourne (Thursday 11th December – The Espy) and Sydney (Friday 12th December – The Factory), hitting the stage with Jamaican reggae revival star, Chronixx

Then in mid-January the band hit the road to launch their third studio album Born Free and I for one, like many of the Blue King Brown fans around the globe no doubt, can’t wait to see them live again!

“It’s been an upful year of creative exploration in the studio, and with the new album now out there in the world, we are pumped to return to the stage with the full force live show.” lead singer, Nattali Rize states, with BKB co founder Carlo adding The world system is pushing us harder, and harder, driving it’s oppressive boot deeper and deeper onto the people, we must holdfast, be the light in what has become a dark reality for many. Do not forget the downtrodden! Reclaim your mind, mental slavery, debt slavery is alive and kicking, we sing and speak against these things, bringing a positive vibration, being the balance, that is what our shows and music is about.”

My heart & mind hold many special memories of seeing Blue King Brown live including rockin’ shows at Big Day Out, shooting them live for triple j at Pyramid Rock and many many more. Pretty damn excited!
