Just 1.5 years after relocating to Sydney from Melbourne (via Los Angeles) to take on Cancer Council Australia as a client, I’ve significantly diversified Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet’s depth of experience across a range of different industries in social media strategy.

After a 3 month stint in California and making the transition from my full-time role as Social Media Lead for SapientNitro in Australia driving social media for Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate, Peroni Italian Beer, Bulmers Original Cider, Oreo, Philly Cream Cheese, Kraft Peanut Butter & more, I decided that I needed a change of scenery, moved up to the beaches of Sydney, knuckling down to the task of operating my own biz again and focusing on project-work with clients across a broad spectrum, including Cosmetics, B2B, Health Insurance, Tech, Health & Wellness, FMCG, Not-For-Profit, Alcohol brands (including craft beer), Travel, Lifestyle and much more.

It’s been a wonderful journey since leaving SapientNitro and we are now in the position where we are expanding Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! to take on new ongoing clients and additional social media strategy projects, as well as ongoing/freelance content production, social media reporting and community management contracts (including Out Of Hours community management – weekends/public holidays and Crisis Management) as part of my ongoing relationships with brands, agency partners and industry friends.

Our clients over the past 12 months include Moula Money (in partnership with Xero), Cancer Council Australia, Mahlab Content Agency (B2B clients on LinkedIn, hbf), Cherry Blooms global cosmetics brand and REBORN Agency. Not only have we managed to grow the business, but in 2017 I became a university lecturer in social media strategy at Macleay College in Sydney for the 1st time, we’ve continued to build the Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! brand through our 2 Instagram accounts, @hotndelicious and @craftbeerlovin’, which have each grown by over 14K+ global followers in the past year, I’ve stepped into brand campaings as a social media influencer myself, speaking engagements at events, had a weekly radio show on Bondi Beach Radio and my weekly iTunes entrepreneurship podcast Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! continues to go from strength-to-strength, averaging over 2K downloads a month in 2017!

2017 has been a magical year so far! 

12 months ago I wrapped my role as the Social Media Lead at SapientNitro and over the following months we won a sh*tload of awards from our work, but it was the right decision, born of a desire to to push myself to new heights and feel again the surge of energy that comes hand-in-hand with running your own show.

Since leaving my full-time role, I’ve shot a TV pilot at Twitter HQ in Sydney and Boilermaker House in Melbourne with two of my best friends Alister Robbie of The Post Project and Matt Smolen of Balloon Tree Productions (still in post-production – watch this space), spent 3 months based in West Hollywood, captured content at the US Masters in Augusta,  Georgia, shot photos of Michelle Obama (called the Secret Service guy who patted me down, mate) and Wolfmother and recorded 4-5 shows for the Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! podcast at SXSW Music Conference in Austin, gained over 10K+ followers on each of my @hotndelicious (12.7K) and @craftbeerlovin’ Instagram (11.4K) accounts (I only launched @craftbeerlovin’ in April 2016 as a way to show my mates back home what beers I was drinking in the USA and now run with my good mate Nathan Webster, relocated to Sydney, took on Cancer Council Australia as a client of Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet!, soaked up the positivity of working with an NFP and the feeling that you experience when you make a significant contribution to an organization, who are making an impact on the lives of Australians every single day, moved to Bondi Beach, landed myself a weekly radio show on Bondi Beach Radio within 10 days of arriving, have been asked to be a guest lecturer role in social media strategy at Sydney University Macleay College, started working as a social media influencer being paid to produce brand partnership content for my own brand – Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet!, took on Mahlab Content Agency (Salesforce, HBf insurance) as a client, made countless new friends and shared some of the most amazing experiences!

My focus with recent clients has been to immerse myself into their business and ways of working, so that I can effectively audit their digital ecosystem, assets (physical and digital), corporate partnerships, influencer engagements, digital channels, content creation and reporting structure, so that I can then create custom Best Practice Social Media Playbooks, monthly or quarterly reporting templates for clients, upgrade their existing systems and processes and create strategic 2-3 year digital roadmaps. 

It’s been a fascinating, challenging, joyful and rewarding year since going out on my own and making the transition from Social Media Lead for SapientNitro in Australia driving social media for Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate, Peroni Italian Beer, Bulmers Original Cider, Oreo, Philly Cream Cheese, Kraft Peanut Butter & more, to diving back into the freelance world with the challenges of owning/operating your own business and contracting with clients for a living.

After returning from Los Angeles in June, I spent six weeks in Melbourne pitching for contracts around Australia which culminated with me relocating to the warmer climes of Sydney to work with one of my favourite and most exciting clients yet… Cancer Council Australia.

While every client, be it agency-side or working for yourself, has its own challenges, ultimately overall this has been one of the most wonderful and enlightening experiences – to consult with an organization that are making a massive impact on the lives of everyday Australians, every single day!

I’m enjoying Sydney and beach life so much that I’ve decided to stay on Sydney for the summer and beyond and relocated from Coogee to Bondi Beach in late 2016 to be closer to the surf and where the action is.

While Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! will continue to consult with Cancer Council Australia and other clients on an ongoing basis, we are in the market for exciting new clients who are a good fit for our lifestyle and what we believe in.

Melbourne, coffee & streetart – why Facebook video is the way forward.

Melbourne, coffee & street art. Is there anything more iconic to Melbourne life?

And this walking video tour from Flinders St Station through Degraves St and down the graffiti alleys of Melbourne CBD by Linchpin Studios just captures that vibe wonderfully! 

Despite the choice in music selection (apologies Mick! 😜 – that’s just my personal opinion, plenty of others clearly loved it), for me as a social media professional, this kind of creative storytelling is the type of content that as a consumer I crave. The kind of content that cuts through the endless swathe of so-called inspirational quotes on white backgrounds that people carelessly pass off as creative and the millions of self-indulgent selfies that so many of us think that the world wants to see (yes, we’re all guilty of selfies, but I guarantee that you’ll be seeing a lot less of these on our Instagram account moving forward).

And as I advised all of my clients at the end of 2015, with the likes of Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, Periscope, Vine and more continuing to strive to tap into those valuable Google/YouTube cash money media dollars, video content is going to continue to be prioritised by platforms in the consumer mobile newsfeed and its imperative that even those in small business find a way to execute video as part of their monthly content calendar.

Many of us won’t have considered this, but every single time that you open up the Facebook App on your mobile, there are well over 1500 pieces of content that Facebook are trying to squeeze into your newsfeed and therefore optimising content for the Facebook Newsfeed algorithm and ensuring premium storytelling for the consumer experience is absolutely key.

Case in point. In late January, producer Mick Russell from Linchpin Studios posted this‘#Melbourne, #coffee & #graffiti’ creative video on their business Facebook Page. Less than two weeks later, the video has enjoyed well over 280K+ Video Views, 3.7K Shares, 1200 new Facebook fans and 400+ Comments from around the world. “But what about the Facebook Advertising Spend?” I hear you say… Well. $2 and 9 cents… yep, you heard it…$2.09 and that off only 200 original Facebook fans on their Facebook Page… This shit went viral! Imagine what it would be like with another cheeky $50 media spend behind it… or $100!

By capturing an audience-centric moment in time that so many Melbournites and tourists like you & I experience every single day, Linchpin Studios have tapped into our hearts and minds resulting in wonderful digital traffic for their business through a simple, but inspired piece of creative storytelling. It doesn’t have to cost tens of thousands of dollars. It just has to be well executed and mean something.

This doesn’t mean reproducing uninspiring and unoriginal “inspiration quotes” on sunset or beach backgrounds or posting cat memes/dog videos that have zero relevance to your brand, it just means take the time to consider the user experience on mobile for someone scrolling past your content on social media for the very first time. If it looks like an advertisement, then it is an advertisement, their eyes will glaze over, anything you were hoping to achieve with that post is immediately lost and even damage your brand reputation!

Get creative and always have the user experience front-of-mind – how can you work your brand and product into content that won’t make someone scroll on by immediately or switch off – Hot tip: Don’t slap logos and Text Overlays over everything!
