Senior Social Media Strategist – Gun For Hire.

Wow, what an experience!

I am still coming down from the excitement that has been Telstra Vantage™ 2018 and yet I’m hitting the ground running on the hunt for my next contract/freelance project or full-time Head of Social Media/Social Media Director/Social Media Strategist role, preferably in Sydney or US-based, but do have clients in other Australian capital cities.

Across the past 3.5 months, I have been Digital & Social Media Lead for Telstra Enterprise on Telstra Vantage, the annual invite-only event 6,000+ customers on smart business tech and innovation held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. And what an experience it was!

Apart from the successful launch of the Telstra Vantage™ TV livestream/on demand service and watching our amazing onsite Enterprise Social Media team bring Telstra Vantage™ to life in digital, key event highlights from the 5 stages at event include the closing keynote from Thai cave rescue heroes, Dr Richard Harris and Craig Challen, as they related to our audience their experiences of the Tham Luang Cave rescue – dubbed “Mission Impossible” – in Thailand earlier this year, Neha Narula’s keynote on blockchain, bitcoin and cryptocurrency, the Business of Sport panel featuring Foxtel CEO Patrick Delany and AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan on how technology is influencing how we promote, broadcast, sponsor and watch sport now and in the future, the Women in Tech “Unstoppable force meets irresistible objective – empowering women in technology” panel and a plethora of the latest Telstra tech including 5G demonstrations, the evolution of drones and any number of partner activations from the likes of Cisco, Samsung, Microsoft and more.

As my role wraps up on the Telstra Vantage project for 2018, I’m excited about my next steps in the industry in Australia/abroad and effective immediately I am on the hunt for either a client-side or an agency-side role/contract and the 3 key elements that I’m seeking in new business opportunities are as follows:

  1. Digitally Progressive – you are a digitally progressive business/brand or you want to be (if you’re not there yet then, you want to pay someone who is and can bring you up to speed).
  2. Corporate Culture/Champion of the People – you foster a culture of inclusiveness from the top down and that is evident in the energy/experience of the people who work with you at all levels.
  3. Champion Great Work – contractors and employees describe your business approach as one that fosters big ideas and proactivity. Industry leaders not followers.

I am a global award-winning social media strategist, university lecturer, speaker, podcaster and content producer with experience across B2B, Fintech, FMCG, Travel, Beer/Alcohol brands, Not-For-Profit, Augmented Reality, Tech/Apps, Health & Wellness, Cosmetics, Health Insurance & more.

I drive strategy for medium to large size enterprises, both agency and client-side.

Over the past 2.5 years, my biz Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! has worked with Cancer Council Australia, Moula fintech, The Bravery, Dos Equis (via FWRD Agency), Cherry Blooms global cosmetics brand, Mahlab Agency (a global B2B digital client, hbf insurance), REBORN Agency and Transplant Australia providing a range of services including a full audit of organisational digital ecosystems and assets, development of 2-3 year strategic roadmaps, Best Practice Social Media Playbooks, development of Digital Media Reporting frameworks, Business-As-Usual/Campaign ideation, organizational training workshops, Issues & Crisis Management Escalation procedures/management, development of brand influencer networks and setting up of agency/client internal/external ways of working systems.

Every new opportunity or organization that I bring our business to, I must be feel like we’re both contributing and learning at the same time – bringing industry expertise to the table, whilst also continuing the evolution of our experience and professional toolkit.

My name is Dan Wilkinson.

I am a global award-winning social media strategist, university lecturer, speaker, podcaster and content producer with experience across FMCG, Travel, Beer/Alcohol brands, B2B, Not-For-Profit, Augmented Reality, Tech/Apps, Fintech, Health & Wellness, Cosmetics, Health Insurance & more.

I am currently on the market looking at permanent roles in Los Angeles, Sydney (or remote), Austin, Portland (OR) or New York City as Social Media Director/Head of Social Media/Social Media Strategy roles.

I have forged multiple careers across my professional lifetime based on an overarching commitment to Life Work Balance (see my latest @hotndelicious podcast for more on this) and the Pursuit of Happiness.

Professionally I define the pursuit of happiness as:

  1. A business opportunity or career role that I am inspired by and passionate.
  2. That that has the potential for positive impact on the lives of others (through clients or the people that I’m working with).
  3. Whilst being paid appropriately for my services and level professional experience (unless I decide that it’s for professional development for myself/business/career or a philanthropic pursuit).

I’ve stayed true to this philosophy from my early 20s from my 6.5 years based in Dubai traveling the globe as an international Emirates Airline flight attendant to juggling numerous roles in the music industry (event operations & logistics/ TV show music supervisor/photography/social media/band management) to putting a 900 square metre ice-rink on the sands of Bondi Beach back in 2011, (the 1st of its kind anywhere in the world!) to today.

Every new role I step into, I must be feel like I’m contributing and learning at the same time – bringing my industry expertise to the table, whilst also continuing the evolution of my experience and professional toolkit.

I definitely prefer working agency-side or 1-on-1 with major clients and the 3 things I look for in new biz opportunities/roles/clients are:

  1. Digitally progressive –you are a digitally progressive business/brand or you want to be (if you’re not there yet then you want to pay someone who is and can bring you up to speed).
  2. Corporate Culture/Champion of the People – you foster a culture of inclusiveness from the top down and that is evident in the energy/experience of the people who work with you at all levels.
  3. Champion Great Work – contractors and employees describe your business approach as one that fosters big ideas and proactivity. Industry leaders not followers.

At this point, I’m rather convinced that my next big opportunity awaits in the USA, so I’m keen to work in:

  1. Los Angeles – Santa Monica, Venice Beach or WeHo.
  2. Austin (TX).
  3. Portland (OR).
  4. New York City – Manhattan or Brooklyn.
  5. Sydney – I love living in Bondi Beach, so if you think you’ve got the right opportunity, then get in touch!
  6. Remote – I can work from anywhere with a laptop and smartphone/wifi connection.

Australian singer/songwriter Mark Wilkinson is living the dream!

  • Meeting through another Sydney singer/songwriter, Kate Gogarty, whom I used to manage and I surprise him with the story that I met this artist through a friend of hers via a dating app.

Ambition, Small Business & Pursuing Your Dreams – Where Should I Begin?

There is NOTHING in the world like being your own boss and getting paid to pursue what you love!

If you had told me in 2015 that I’d be making more $$$ in 2 days than I used to make in 5 and that I would be living 5 minutes walk from the ocean, working remotely from the home office every day (I commute to work via the kitchen 😃) and then creating podcasts, Instagram content and business development on my other work days, then I would have said to you “Let’s jump in the time machine and take me there immediately!”

From studying biochemistry to Emirates Airline senior flight attendant to music industry jack-of-all-trades to global award-winning social media strategist, my life has been a journey of design, chasing that “Life Work Balance”. Yep, you heard right… ever since I was 20 years old I’ve pursued an approach to life by focusing on jobs that allow me to live a certain lifestyle and chase what I love for living… travel, music & a life of creativity.

If you had told me 20 years ago I’d be a flight attendant living in Dubai for 6.5 years, I’d have pissed myself laughing… “No way!”, if you’d told me 12 years ago that I’d be working in social media for a living I’d have been like “What’s Social Media?” 😉 And I’m still rolling with it… last year I spent 3 months in California after leaving my full-time job and since moved to Bondi Beach in December, turned my podcast into a radio show on Bondi Beach Radio and took on my first university gig lecturing in Social Media Strategy at Macleay College in Sydney. WTF is happening right now?!! 🚀 Keep Pushin’!
