Marriage Equality. The answer is YES!
I don’t jump up on the soap box very often and so when I do you can rest assured that it’s subject matter that I am SUPER passionate about!
On Friday night I was kickin’ it at home after hectic week working on the social media strategy for the launch of a new app, when it struck me… Why the hell hadn’t I recorded an episode of my show about Marriage Equality?
Being an ex Emirates Airline flight attendant with LOADS of mates who are LGBTIQA, I am super passionate about the #MarriageEquality vote in Australia and want to be able to utilize my Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet weekly iTunes entrepreneurship podcast and social media presence to raise awareness for the vote and the need for Australians to take part in the upcoming Marriage Equality vote.
More than 760 million people countries around the world live in 23 countries where same-sex marriage is already a legal right. How are we not on board already?? It’s a basic human right! Fact. We were the 2nd country in the world to given women the legal right to vote (yep, New Zealand beat us again 😃). How are we so far behind now??
I immediately shot a text to my home-boy Craig Mack, who is a Social Media Strategist (TEDx Sydney, The Pinnacle Foundation, UTS), model with Wink Models, blogger, brand ambassador (Beyond Blue, R U OK?) and openly gay Sydney man, to join me to create an exclusive show about #MarriageEquality and the upcoming plebiscite vote to legalise gay marriage in Australia.

Just one year after relocating to Sydney from Melbourne (via Los Angeles) to take on Cancer Council Australia as a client, I’ve significantly diversified our depth of experience across a range of different industries.
After a 3 month stint in California and making the transition from my full-time role as Social Media Lead for SapientNitro in Australia driving social media for Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate, Peroni Italian Beer, Bulmers Original Cider, Oreo, Philly Cream Cheese, Kraft Peanut Butter & more, I decided that I needed a change of scenery, moved up to the beaches of Sydney, knuckling down to the task of operating my own biz again and focusing on project-work with clients across a broad spectrum, including not-for-profit, B2B, health insurance, fintech, beauty brands, craft beer & more.
It’s been a wonderful journey since leaving SapientNitro and we are now in the position where we are expanding Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! to take on new ongoing clients and additional social media strategy projects, as well as ongoing/freelance content production, social media reporting and community management contracts (including Out Of Hours community management – weekends/public holidays and Crisis Management) as part of my ongoing relationships with brands, agency partners and industry friends.
Our clients over the past 12 months include Moula Money (in partnership with Xero), Cancer Council Australia, Mahlab Content Agency (B2B clients on LinkedIn, hbf) and REBORN Agency. Not only have we managed to grow the business, but in 2017 I became a university lecturer in social media strategy at Macleay College in Sydney for the 1st time, we’ve continued to build the Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! brand through our 2 Instagram accounts, @hotndelicious and @craftbeerlovin’, which have each grown by over 14K+ global followers in the past year, I’ve stepped into brand campaings as a social media influencer myself, speaking engagements at events, had a weekly radio show on Bondi Beach Radio and my weekly iTunes entrepreneurship podcast Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! continues to go from strength-to-strength, averaging over 2K downloads a month in 2017!
While every project has its challenges, be yours client-side, agency-side or indeed working in your own business, ultimately this past 18 months has been one of the most wonderful, enlightening and rewarding experiences of my life thus far – to take the leap of faith to run your own business and brand, then to see it take off! It makes me so happy!

- Creating the Peroni Nastro Azzurro social media brand book, which struck such a powerful chord with the Peroni brand team, so much so that they asked us to present the brand book as an example to all their agency partners and paved the way for a complete transition of Peroni into a digital brand with a new digital ecosystem including the Peroni Stile Italiano lifestyle blog and Peroni Instagram channel.
- Our award winning Philly Pourovers campaign where SapientNitro partnered with Instagram for the launch of Instagram Advertising in Australia, driving a measurable uplift in offline sales and a demonstrable ROI through social media for Philadelphia Cream Cheese.
- Sparking a national flavour debate with the creation of the Cadbury #ChocPlusWhat campaign leading up to the launch of Cadbury Dairy Milk with Vegemite Chocolate, which resulted in the Cadbury and #ChocPlusWhat trending nationally on Facebook/Twitter in Australia, made global news and was turned into a Twitter Business case study.

Cassie Lane is one of the most hilarious, intelligent and beautiful people I know and like so many of us, Cassie Lane grew up desperately wanting to be someone else.
At 16 years of age, Cassie jetted off overseas from Australia on an exciting student exchange adventure. One day she was walking the streets of Italy and the next she found herself swept up into the life of a jet-setter, strutting the catwalks of Milan, Italy and the world as an international model.
Next stop USA. Life living in Los Angeles was like something out of a TV show – sharing a house with 3 other models, mixing it with celebrities on a global scale and partying hard in the LA scene. And yet something was missing…
Beneath all the flash and fancy, she started seeing through the world of exploitation and self-destruction where “living off your looks can attract as much scorn as admiration.”
Yearning for something more, Cassie returned to Australia determined to pursue her passions and whilst taking her next steps in self-development through study, she also began dating Australian footballer, Alan Didak (Collingwood football Club), who wasn’t that well known at the time. As his sporting profile grew in Australia, Cassie found herself thrust back into the limelight and the oft noxious environment of a WAG (Wives And Girlfriends of high-profile professional athlete), where at times she found herself labelled as ‘slut’, ‘skank’ and ‘stripper’, and constantly being told that she should toe the line and be happy with her life as the partner of a football star. And then came the toxic cherry top… being voted worst dressed at the Brownlow Medal whilst attending the nationally televised AFL Best & Fairest Awards show with her partner. Devastating…
Especially for a highly intelligent person that now not only has a double degree in Psychology and Communications, but now a Masters of Creative Writing at the University of Melbourne, from which the thesis of that Masters is this very book and memoir.
‘How to Dress a Dummy’ is frank, open, honest, hilarious and beautiful journey of empowerment and self discovery… I myself was clearly never a catwalk model, but there are so many parallels between Cassie’s life and my own. I grew up knowing that I was different, an outsider and I always felt like a bit of a weirdo. And I still am a weirdo, it’s just that I’m my kind of weirdo and the most beautiful thing that you can discover is to learn to love yourself and to be yourself, for once you do you will notice that you attract the friends/people who most want to be around you, to be with you and to be like you… And that is one of the most amazing moments of realization that anyone can experience!
It makes me so happy to see my friends strive for success, achieve their goals and focus on what completes them and makes them happy. I love that I can share this story.
