Now I’m drinking just to feel something, in a twisted way I guess you win…

Blessed to have so many wonderfully, talented friends, I loved having talented Australian/English singer songwriter Tanya Batt AKA BATTS Music back on the Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! podcast.

We had so much to talk about that this episode is a double banger with not one, but two podcasts! One this week, one next!

Over a couple of cheeky Jameson Irish Whiskeys, in Part 1 this week we discuss her beautiful new single, ‘Kiki’, platonic friendships with the opposite sex, falling in love, heart-break, break-ups and wondering if the person you have broken up with is thinking about you, Bon Iver at the Sydney Opera House, recording in New York and Iceland, how BATTS Music and Tanya’s career is starting to take off in both Australia and the UK, nudie runs & living at Meredith Music Festival, Braille Face, meeting Nile Rogers & Chic and Charles Bradley at Golden Plains, our respective recent journeys in the past few months to the UK and USA, working with Katy Perry, a mini USA announcement of my own and so much more!

We chat about our favourite TV shows including Peaky Blinders, Suits and Game Of Thrones with English actress, Emilia Clarke, dancing with Ellen DeGeneres and The Graham Norton Show, constantly evolving as an individual in your career by exploring yourself, doing what you love and constantly reassessing where you’re at, gun reform in the USA, #LoveIsLove and the Orlando Pulse Nightclub shooting, having a gun pointed at my head by the police while I was in the USA, syncing music, artistic credit & copyright and the beautiful time-lapse video that I shot on the Savannah River in Augusta, Georgia syncing BATT’s beautiful new single ‘Kiki’.

I love my podcast hangs with this lady as she is just a little ray of sunshine and one of those wonderful friends who is a constant inspiration to myself and others with all the hard yards that she is putting in to bring her dreams into reality.

Destined for greatness! Oh wait… she’s already great, mate! 🌟

Let’s get amongst it!

Los Liones Trail & Bursting the Plastic Fantastic Bubble of LA by hiking California – Hike #4

Los Liones Trail in the Santa Monica Mountains in Los Angeles, California, is just the best!

One of the most important things when traveling the world over and learning about a new city or country is to hang out with people who actually live there and do what the locals do. Find your people and soak up the local culture.

When deciding whether to spend most of my 90 days in the USA in New York or Los Angeles, the factors that I used to weigh up my decision were the culture (I felt like New York would be a better fit for me), weather/climate, opportunities and friends/networks.

Ultimately the weather and my friends/networks played a BIG factor in me deciding on Los Angeles as opposed to NYC, but one of my concerns was getting trapped up in the plastic fantastic lifestyle of Tinsel Town, like I did when based in Dubai whilst working with Emirates Airlines. I needn’t have worried.

Sure, if you’re keen to party all the time (and I had my moments), there’s something on every single night of the week in Los Angeles if you want it; a killer stand-up comedy scene at places like Nerdmelt Showroom, The Comedy Store or Hollywood Improv, world-renown live music venues like Sayers Club, Whisky A Go Go and Viper Room, a vast array of restaurants/bars and because a vast majority of the population work in the entertainment industry, there’s always launch parties, awards ceremonies or drinks and networking meetings to get to.

My focus for this trip was to enjoy LA, but it was also imperative that I knuckle down into my new freelance Australian social media contracts that I was working on remotely, to get a feel for California and start building some networks.

I also didn’t want to get trapped up in meaningless acquaintance-style friendships partying 5-7 days a week like some of those I made in my Dubai days, ’cause I’m at a stage in my life where things are really starting to take shape and I’d rather pour the majority of my time and money into something more tangible, that makes me truly happy.

As regular readers will know from my hiking articles so far on Griffith Observatory, Lake Hollywood and Hollywood Peak, I balanced my nights out in LA watching live comedy, catching up with friends or watching the NBA Finals at my local sports bar, with some of the best hikes all around Los Angeles.

And no, I’m not just talking Runyon Canyon, where all the beautiful people hang out and talk shop – I loved chatting with friends who live in LA about their favourites hikes or seeking out new ones to try together. It’s a wonderful way to strengthen friendships and get away from the bubble of Hollywood, that it could be so easy to get trapped up in.

One such trail I discovered recently with my friends Sam, Bec and Cat was Los Liones Canyon, a short drive past Santa Monica Pier to the start of the Santa Monica Mountains, a coastal mountain range in Southern California, parallel to the Pacific Ocean, with over 500 miles of trails offering the perfect escape from the urban jungle.

We hiked for a solid 2 and a quarter hours, with an array of wildlife in the area including a bunch of lizards & one solitary sleepy snake, who was struggling to get off the trail, and as the “May Gray” (yeah, that’s a thing) started to wash away from the SoCal skies about halfway through our hike, we were left with stunning, sweeping views of Santa Monica, the whole of greater Los Angeles and it’s seemingly endless beaches…

Ultimately it’s become abundantly clear to me through Californian experiences like these, that while LA is definitely Hollywood and Tinsel Town it is so much more. By trusting your gut instinct, doing a little research and approaching the exploration of cities that are brand new to you with the right mindset, you can choose your own adventure and it’ll change your life. This 90 days in Los Angeles, California was the right decision for me.

Happiness!

SOUNDS AUSTRALIA funding – An Open Letter To Our Australian Government – #SaveOurSounds.

An Open Letter To The Australian Government – SOUNDS AUSTRALIA funding – #SaveOurSounds

Dear Adam, (Mr Adam Bandt MP – Member for Melbourne, Victoria)

I am writing to you as a small business owner, member of your electorate and as a concerned member of the Australian music industry regarding the recent funding cuts to SOUNDS AUSTRALIA, our national music export office.

Now, as I’m sure that you’re aware*, SOUNDS AUSTRALIA is Australia’s export music market development initiative, established to provide a cohesive and strategic platform to assist the Australian music industry access international business opportunities.

Since 2009, Sounds Australia have supported literally hundreds of Australian artists in their endeavours to build their profile and international audiences beyond our shores, so that they can continue to bring joy to the masses and ultimately build successful careers doing something they love.

Courtney Barnett, Chet Faker, Flume and Vance Joy, all played Sounds Australia showcases in their first year of export, and all benefitted from repeat Sounds Australia performance opportunities in the year following.

It’s also not just the musicians impacted by these government budget cuts. Business owners who work digital media, PR & publicity, photographers, bloggers, management companies, booking agents, festivals and even independent Australian record labels, all benefit from the efforts of Millie Millgate, Glenn Dickie, Esti Zilber and the Sounds Australia team, with significantly increased reach and brand new networks in markets around the world through the showcases and opportunities created by Sounds Australia.

Indeed, Sounds Australia have been a special part of my own journey. In 2013, I assisted with sponsorship, provided photography and social media leading up to/during SXSW for The Aussie BBQ and other Sounds Australia events, which lead me to returning to SXSW and Texas again in 2016 under my own steam, where I recorded a number of podcasts, shot photos of Michelle Obama’s keynote speech with Queen Latifah and Missy Elliot on #LetGirlsLearn, Vance Joy at Verizon Theatre in Grand Prairie,  Wolfmother’s SXSW packed house at Easy Tiger and much, much more.

In my past 3 months in the USA, I regularly heard the music of Australian artists supported by SOUNDS AUSTRALIA playing in bars, restaurants, airports, radio and more around the country, and you should see the volume of Aussie artists now able to live and tour regularly in the USA… Vance Joy recently wrapped a tour of North America and Australia supporting Taylor SwiftHermitude and Henry Wagons played Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Tennessee this past weekend, The Griswolds have been on tour in the USA for weeks if not months and my good friends, Simon and Melinda, from Falls have been living in the USA since 2013, released their debut album through Verve/Interscope late last year and premiered the first single off that album through the Wall Street Journal!

As it stands, without a funding solution SOUNDS AUSTRALIA will not be able to operate at the current level past December 2016, negatively impacting my business and the wider music industry.

The expert service provided by SOUNDS AUSTRALIA bolsters economic activity and job creation, contributes directly to the local economy and enriches our cultural identity. There are few initiatives that actively seek to fuel the growth of small business in our electorate the way SOUNDS AUSTRALIA has done for the past eight years.

Some of SOUNDS AUSTRALIA’s key results so far include:
  • 620 Australian artists supported, at 48 different international events in 52 cities across 19 countries.
  • 1292 new performance opportunities.
  • 1593 business outcomes for Australian artists (signing record deals etc).
  • 97 networking/B2B events and 158 unique showcase presentations.
  • 300% compound annual growth in individual earnings within three years of the first SOUNDS AUSTRALIA (and first international) appearance, for top tier artists.

Adam, I urge you to see SOUNDS AUSTRALIA as the critical service it is, and engage with your party and Senator the Hon Mitch Fifield to develop a direct government and industry investment solution.

To each & every one of you reading this, music industry or otherwise, even if you’re just a punter who loves amazing Australian music and wants to see our artists/bands continue to thrive overseas, which in turn impacts on the music we get back home, then you can play your part by sharing this article with your friends, family and networks via Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn. It takes 2 minutes.

If you’re truly passionate, then get involved by taking ten minutes to write directly to your local MP and join the #SaveOurSounds movement. I’ve included details below on how to find them. Get involved!

Thank you for your time and help #SaveOurSounds

Best Regards,

Dan Wilkinson

DOWNLOAD PODCAST – #81 Andrew Bongiorno (actor – The Boy From Oz).

Andrew Bongiorno, star of the sold-out, twice-extended West Coast USA production of award-winning Broadway musical, The Boy From Oz, was born in a small country town like myself, has lived in many different cities/countries around the world and is striving for a life and career that dreams are made of.

Bongiorno AKA Bonge is an Australian actor who’s TV/film credits over the past 4 years in the USA include NCISNCIS: Los Angeles, Ben Affleck‘s latest Warner feature Live By Night and for the past six weeks he’s been starring in the lead role in the The Boy From Oz.

For those of you not familiar, The Boy From Oz is an Australian musical that’s already been a massive success on Broadway including 5 Tony Awards nominations including Best Musical and Australia’s very own Hugh Jackman winning Best Actor in a Musical.

The Boy From Oz focuses on the extraordinary life of legendary singer/songwriter Peter Allen, from his birth in 1944 and humble beginnings to his meteoric rise to fame as an international star. The story covers Peter’s life and career in Australia and the United States, as well as his relationships with the legendary singing stars Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli.

Studying the same 3 year acting degree as Hugh Jackman & taught by the late Oscar nominee writer of The Boy From Oz – Nick Enright, Bongiorno has been living in the USA for the past 4.5 years and in today’s podcast we discuss what it’s like to be living & working as an Australian actor in Los Angeles, meeting & being starstruck backstage by Robert De NiroE & Turtle from Entourage, some of the amazing hikes on offer in the Santa Monica Mountains that surround Los Angeles, his earliest ever memory in Papua New Guinea and much, much more.

I often talk on my podcast about one of the keys to success being to surround yourself with individuals who inspire you, no matter what industry you work in and for me, Andrew Bongiorno, AKA Bonge to his friends, is one of those.

Like The Boy From Oz, this inspiring podcast is all about following your ambition, living your dreams & life to the fullest and it is a bloody ripper!

I’m proud of you, man. Let’s get amongst it!
