Interview #16 – Scott Dooley

Ladies & Gentlemen my name is Dan Wilkinson and welcome to the Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet weekly podcast where we interview inspiring individuals and successful entrepreneurs across a range of industries from around the planet

Today we punch out an interview with New York based Aussie comedian Scott Dooley. This one’s not for the faint of heart and I must admit Scott had me stumbling at the start.. bang he was straight out of the gate with an awkward question… ha ha.. cheeky bastard 🙂 only the 2nd time I’ve ever been stumped on my own podcast – I’m looking at you Will Anderson! 🙂

Anyway, we chat about the generosity of Aussie comedian Sam Simmons, Aussie hip hop, Australian Rules football, the Cricket World Cup, relationships, owning the tough mistakes, the people who inspire Scott to do what he does and the challenge of effectively uprooting your life and starting a career all over again by moving across the world to the USA and yep, he gets his nipple out in the intro video.. first time for everything!

Get amongst it!

Interview #15 – Nazeem Hussain.

Ladies & Gentlemen welcome to the Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet.
I’m pretty excited right now as at this every moment it’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival season in Melbourne and I just love how the whole city comes to life at this time of year.

To celebrate, I’m going to focus our podcast interviews over the next month around some of Australia’s top stand-up comedians and a few wonderful international acts also. And as a special treat to you guys – this week I’m dropping not one but two episodes – today’s interview with Australian comedian, actor and radio presenter, Nazeem Hussain and the 2nd one tomorrow with New York-based Aussie comedian Scott Dooley.

Love this chat with Naz. When he arrived, he just walked into my apartment and immediately we were chatting as if we were old friends – the conversation just flowed.

We cover off traveling to faraway festivals in Western Australia, dealing with drunks and wanna-be hecklers when you’re on stage, his transition from working in tax law doing comedy on the side to having his own tax show and being taken out to dinner by Australian spy agency, ASIO.. yes I’m serious…

Anyway, enjoy the ep and don’t forget to subscribe to this shit as we have a bunch more wicked interviews coming up with super comedians every week.

Peace!

Facebook signals clear intent to take on Google – announcing new embedded video player at F8.

Posted on Updated on

Facebook F8 Developer Conference

Facebook has been rolling out a bunch of changes over the past 6 months to take on the likes of Google (in particular YouTube).

One of their latest changes announced at F8 Developer conference overnight is that they’re launching an embedded video player that allows Facebook-hosted videos anywhere on the web (like YouTube or Vimeo).

On it’s own it doesn’t appear to be a particularly innovative approach, but is a simple, highly effective game-changer as Facebook continues its focus on video and renews its clear intent to dip into the pool of video advertising $$$.

With Facebook Native Video (video posted directly to Facebook) being optimized for the Facebook algorithm and thus receiving significantly higher views than a YouTube link posted to a brand’s Facebook Page timeline, brands will need to weigh up the value and strategy around where they host the videos displayed on their website in the not to distant future.

Food for thought.

If you haven’t seen The Basics live then do yourself a favour and check out their tunes.. Ah-MAZING! Kick-ass jams, one of the best live bands I’ve seen and the banter these 3 guys share just elevates their live sets to another level.

Interview #13 – Narissa Doumani

Morning all! 🙂

Apologies for being a little croaky & dusty, but let’s just say yesterday was a wonderful afternoon of a long pub lunch in the sunshine, table tennis and 1 or 2 sundown beers in Melbourne-town 😀

Pumped about this interview and to be able to announce the launch of the ‘A Spacious Life: Memoir of a Meditator’, an inspiring book written by my beautiful friend, author, model and source of inspiration, Narissa Doumani.

‘A Spacious Life: Memoir of a Meditator’ is look into the quest for meaning beyond materialism and insight into Narissa’s use of mindfulness and meditation for well-being and fulfilment within modern-day life.
From the minute I picked up A Spacious Life I was excited, not only is Narissa one of my first friends to have written a book, but the way her words just flowed on page and were instantly relatable made it impossible to put down – I crave inspiring subject matter that’s easy to digest as reading for me is all about down-time and relaxing.
Anyway, Narissa and I chat about life growing as a child in Australia of Thai and Lebanese heritage (her not me 😉 ), the challenge of working alone to bring your first novel to life and the significant impact of meditation on her outlook on life.

A Spacious Life: Memoir of a Meditator launches this week (Mar. 18, 2015) and Narissa Doumani is hosting the launch event in Melbourne (Australia) on Saturday 21st of March with $5 for every book sold on the day going to the Feed Melbourne Appeal. Come on down and join me if you like?

I have the most talented friends 🙂 Enjoy!

Interview #12 – Blue King Brown

Good morning world!

Today we’re in for a bit of a treat. A few short weeks back I was blessed to catch-up with Carlo Santone and Nattali Rize of Blue King Brown before they jetted back off to Jamaica for another 6 months. Living the dream!

I’ve shot Blue King Brown live and seen them at a bunch of festivals/shows around Australia and we’ve got a few mutual friends, so it was kind of cool finally having them on my couch to chat about the inspiration of living and recording in Kingston, Jamaica (yes, this is their second time now), shitty jobs like delivering pamphlets back in the day to keep the cash coming in, to inspiration and impact of the likes of Miles Davis, Mama Kin and Sydney Peace Prize winner Noam Chomsky on their lives, doing their bit to raise awareness for what’s going down in West Papua, their beginnings and how the stunning, mind-blowing beach town of Byron Bay has changed over the years.

We get the down low on Blue King Brown’s kick-ass new album “Born Free” (stream in full on below) and Nattali Rize’s new solo career a brand new project that these 2 lovely people are now pursuing side-by-side along with the Blue King Brown project – recording with Julian Marley and a swag of other talented Jamaican musicians.

Let’s get down to it.

The Paterson Project – Majestic street-art for the most perfect cause.

The Paterson Project - Street-artists raising funds for the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation

Streetart exhibition raises funds for Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation

Anyone who knows me knows how much I’ve fallen in love with Melbourne’s street-art scene over the past few years and so as exhausted as I was after a hectic week, nothing could stop me jumping on my bike and riding late through the wet streets of Melbourne on Friday night to attend a wonderful event on Smith St in Fitzroy for the most perfect cause.

The Paterson Project was held at heritage-listed Paterson Building where over the course of the past week, over 100 artists, including the likes of Rone, Adnate, Mayo, DVATE, Facter, Alexandra Lederman and many more, dedicated their time to decorating the walls of this grand old building with their works of art to be auctioned off to raise funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Packed to the rafters with more hipsters than you could poke a beard at, it was wonderful to be able to appreciate so many majestic pieces of art in the one place and I wandered up and down the 3 floors of this living and breathing masterpiece for over an hour.

One of my simplest weekend pleasures is to spend hours wandering previously unexplored alleyways or even streets that I think I already know around Melbourne, with the prospect of stumbling upon some unexpected beauty…

Occasionally, I’ll overhear people bitching about their favourite piece being tagged by some young punk or being covered up by a new piece of artwork that they don’t like, but what they don’t consider and they’re missing is that there-in lies its beauty – street-art is the perfect, symbolic reflection of life on this planet – beauty is everywhere, fleeting and quite often in the last place you’d expect to find it… captivating in one moment and then gone the next – as such it helps teach us to appreciate every single moment for what it is and even when it fades or is gone, becomes a part of us forever.

Beauty is everywhere. Enjoy!

Apologies to any artists who’s names we’ve missed or for any incorrectly labelled artworks. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch so that we can update accordingly.
